1 Schedule 4: Proficiency in English All applicants wishing to undertake a course of study at the University of Canberra must meet the English proficiency requirements for that particular course. 3 Applicants who have not undertaken all of their study in a country listed above will be required to provide evidence of meeting the English requirements if they are applying for a course with a higher English language requirement. Applicants can also meet the University s standard English proficiency requirements by the means listed below: All of their study was not in one of the countries listed above, but they have successfully completed at least two (2) years senior secondary study or at least one (1) year of fulltime tertiary study in one of these countries, AND the language of instruction of the study was English. A minimum of two (2) years full time study overseas where the medium of instruction was English. Applicants should provide an official letter from their previous tertiary institution confirming study in English. The study above was not normally undertaken more than two years ago. Applicants who do not meet the requirements detailed above may satisfy the University s English proficiency by demonstrating the required results in the following Tests (inclusive of band scores where applicable). IELT TOEF L PTE CAE CPE International English Language Testing System (Academic) Test of English as a Foreign Language (ibt Internet based test) Pearson Test of English (Academic) Cambridge English (Advanced) Cambridge English: Certificate of Proficiency in English The University of Canberra normally accepts results from IELTS, PTE, CAE and CPE tests as being current for two years and results from TOEFL as being current for 18 months. The duration for accepting results may be extended in exceptional circumstances following consultation with the University of Canberra English Language Institute (UCELI). Page 3

4 The table below provides an indication of the overall score comparisons required for overall entry: IELTS TOEFL PTE CAE CPE (Grade C) Where a student has undertaken a recognised English Language Test and the test has been undertaken after the student originally met the University s English proficiency requirements, the results of the test will supersede any prior English proficiency assessment. Meeting English Proficiency by Other Means Applicants may meet English proficiency requirements by other means including the University of Canberra English Language Institute (UCELI) and University of Canberra College (UCC). 5 UCELI Students completing a program at UCELI will be given an IELTS (Academic) equivalent that can be used to satisfy the University s English language proficiency requirements. Students completing a program at UCELI cannot achieve an equivalent overall IELTS greater than 7.0. Students who require an IELTS score greater than 7.0 will need to sit one of the recognised English Language Tests. UCC Admission to UCC diplomas for international students has a lower English proficiency requirement. Successful completion of these diplomas will satisfy the University s standard English language proficiency requirement.
