The National Trust for Historic Preservation takes direct, on-the ground action to save historic buildings, landscapes, and sites when they are threatened. Their work helps build vibrant, sustainable communities. In addition, they advocate with governments nationwide to save America s heritage. They strive to create a cultural legacy as diverse as the nation itself so that all of us can take pride in our part of the American story. The National Trust is committed to being the cause that inspires Americans to save the places where history happened; the cause that connects us to our diverse pasts, weaving a multi-cultural nation together; and the cause that transforms communities from places where we live into places that we love. Today, the National Trust is a 450-person organization with full and part-time staff based at headquarters in Washington, D.C., in 14 field offices nationwide, and at 27 historic sites across the country. With 300,000 members and supporters, and an operating budget of $47 million, the organization is recognized as the leader of the historic preservation and conservation movement in the United States. Last fall, guided by more than 60 years of experience, the National Trust launched a new strategic vision, one that promises to expand the organization s reach and impact. As part of the new vision, the National Trust has developed a rigorous strategic framework, Preservation10X, which directs their resources to some of the most important and critically threatened places in the nation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking a seasoned leader and strategic partner for the role of (CDO). This individual must be a national leader who can garner respect and support of donors, colleagues, other non-profits, and experts in the field. S/he must know how to take a great brand and grow it into a world class operation. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and creative leader who can create excitement and energy around the National Trust for Historic Preservation mission. As a leader of the organization, the CDO will foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and will ensure systems and protocols are in place to leverage fundraising at and among headquarters, 14 field offices, and 27 historic sites in support of the organization s ambitious new strategic objectives. The CDO will lead approximately 27 staff and additional volunteers in developing strategies to strengthen and build the 1

2 organization s donor base and grow the annual giving program, including the execution of a $250 million campaign. The CDO serves as staff liaison to the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Trustees and to the Campaign Cabinet. The CDO reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer and serves as a member of the Executive Team, which oversees strategy development and manages resource allocation. S/he also serves on the Leadership Team, which promotes integration of programs throughout the organization. About The National Trust for Historic Preservation Chartered by Congress in 1949, today the National Trust for Historic Preservation is supported entirely by private contributions and is broadly recognized as the leader of the historic preservation movement in the country. At the heart of the Trust s work is saving places. The organization focuses on resources that are nationally significant, or those for which the preservation result has national implications. Using real estate, advocacy, and legal tools, the Trust takes direct, onthe-ground action to save threatened buildings, historic sites, and cultural landscapes with deep significance to our country. The National Trust continues to be the cause for saving places that reflect our past. The organization believes deeply in the continuity of culture, the richness of diversity, and respect for tradition. They are certain that the historic places they help save today will improve and enrich lives tomorrow, and that future drives their actions. The National Trust has several programs focused entirely on identifying endangered historic places and taking action to save them: National Treasures: The Trust s National Treasures are a revolving portfolio of some of the most important and critically threatened properties and places in the nation places with national significance or implications. When the Trust gets involved with these places, the organization brings its unique voice and skill set to the cause by coordinating campaigns that unite all the organization s resources legal, preservation, advocacy, marketing, and fundraising to get results on the ground. Preservation Priorities: Given its national scope and leadership role within the preservation community, the Trust is uniquely positioned to identify cutting-edge issues, and then advance research, dialogue, and action to address them. To promote innovation in preservation priority areas, the Trust invests in two-tothree-year work plans involving original research, publications, convenings of non-traditional partners, and development of policy solutions. Enriching the Future: The Trust strives to bring together thousands of people joined by a common desire to protect the places and stories that define us. Trust lawyers and policy experts advocate for supportive laws and policies. Rehabilitation and preservation specialists support their peers with training, materials, and small grant programs. And the Trust s marketing and outreach staff design programs and campaigns to engage and inspire America s 15 million local preservationists. About the Position The is a senior leader responsible for helping set the direction and ensure the financial health of the organization. S/he is expected to be a highly effective fundraising executive and possess excellent management and leadership characteristics. 3 achievable steps, set and manage appropriate expectations, and make well-informed decisions in a timely manner. In addition, the CDO must maintain strong and productive relationships with the CEO, the Executive Team, staff, board members, donors, and other stakeholders. The CDO s responsibilities will include: Annual and Campaign Fundraising Establish and manage a development operating plan that ties directly to the organization s five-year financial plan, incorporating annual and campaign objectives to grow the entire organization. Provide leadership for an annual fundraising effort. Today, annual giving represents $6 million of a $47 million budget. By 2016, it is expected to produce $8 million annually. Provide leadership for the successful implementation of a $250 million comprehensive campaign to support Preservation10X, the Trust s strategic vision. Personally manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects. Management Serve as a member of the Executive Team and successfully lead the organization. Provide strategic oversight and leadership of the Development Division. Currently at 27 employees, this Division is expected to grow through the addition of campaign staff. Manage the day-to-day operations of the development function. Create a stable and enriching working environment that is rewarding to staff and volunteers. Staff liaison to the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Trustees and Campaign Cabinet Facilitate effective coordination between headquarters, field offices, and historical sites. Evaluation, metrics and compliance Develop and successfully execute performance metrics. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws. Maintain accountability standards to donors and ensure compliance with code of ethics principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives. External Serve as an organizational ambassador and the public face of the organization. Keep informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development, as well as the general fields of management and not-for-profit sector, bringing insights that are applicable to the Trust. Ideal Experience The CDO must have a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising/development, including at least five years of supervisory experience. Experience in the field of conservation, preservation, arts, or culture is a plus. The successful candidate will display a strong sense of sophistication and a collaborative, strategic approach to fundraising. S/he will have the proven ability to successfully lead an organization. 4 Bachelor s degree is required; advanced degree or record of continuing professional development preferred. Proven track record in leading dynamic organizations and motivating staff and volunteers to achieve new levels of excellence. Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive development program and producing significant results on a sustained basis. Proven track record growing fundraising programs and implementing innovative and creative fundraising strategies. Significant experience leading and managing a capital campaign is strongly preferred. Experience working effectively and respectfully with members of the senior leadership team, as well as with board members/trustees and other high-level volunteers. Ability to gain internal respect and build consensus among superiors, peers and subordinates. Ability to maintain an enterprise-wide perspective and utilize strong analytical skills to maximize ROI. A strong track record as an effective, team-oriented leader and a thoughtful, diplomatic mentor. Success in developing short- and long-term planning and evaluation while directing and motivating staff. Financial literacy and significant knowledge of governance of non-profit organizations. Knowledge of planning, finance, budgeting, and development information systems. The ideal candidate will possess: Strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the National Trust, with the ability to serve as a strong, compelling ambassador for the organization. A deep, broad knowledge of development, including all aspects of fundraising. Strong strategic thinking skills and ability to see the big picture. Sophistication and ability to communicate articulately and interact comfortably with high-net-worth individuals and groups. Ability to convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the organization and the preservation movement. Professional maturity, credibility, judgment, and integrity, including strict adherence to the highest ethical standards in management and fund development. A proven ability to work collaboratively and thoughtfully as part of a committed, integrated leadership team. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely (both in writing and orally); listens as well as gives advice, and respects the abilities of others.
