3 Making a Multi-Media Production With Windows Live Movie Maker Part 1 In Part 1, we will select the pictures to be in the presentation, add video clips, learn to rearrange the items, and finish by making an initial version of your movie. In Part 2, we will put the finishing touches on it, including adding background music. The screen shots are from the Windows 7 version of Windows Live Movie Maker (WLMM).(Movie Maker 6.0), but they are essentially the same for the Vista version. The WLMM Workspace The figure below shows the basic WLMM workspace. It is significantly different from the workspace one sees using the standard Movie Maker program. 4 Step 1 Open a New Project In the upper left corner, click on the blue tab and select New Project. Step 2 Import the Photos for Your Presentation Click on the icon shown in the first figure above. Browse to the folder containing the desired images. Select the photos you want to include using the standard Windows technique. Click Open. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 4

5 Thumbnails of the selected images will appear in the main editing window. In the above figure note the vertical bar to the left of the first image.it is the current playback position of the movie. As you preview the movie, it will move across the screen. The red ellipse shows an image that has had a caption appied to it. Step 3 Set Basic Options and Save WLMM Project On the Menu bar, click on Project. Select Aspect Ratio. For our purposes, we ll use 16:9, and of course NTSC. Click on the blue tab and select Save Project as Navigate to the folder where you want your project file to be saved following the standard Windows prompts and screens. Hereafter, click on Save to periodically update your project file. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 5

6 Step 4 Reorder Your Images as Needed The way your movie is displayed in WLMM is different most programs. It combines what many programs refer to as the Scene Line (filmstrip of thumbnails) with the Timeline, which in the case with WLMM, the moving vertical line mentioned above. To change the order of a single image a group of images, select it or them in the usual way and drag them to their new position. Step 5 Preview Your Movie To preview your movie at any time, click on the play button below the Preview Monitor. You can click on the small box with the arrow to preview it full screen. To exit the full screen mode, press the ESC key. Step 6 Add a Video Clip to the Presentation Position the vertical play bar just left of the frame that you want to come before te video clip. Click on Home on the Menu Bar and the Add Photos and Videos button. Navigate and select your video clips, and click on Open. You can move video clips in the same manner as still images to rearrange their order. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 6

7 Step 7 Save Your Project & Final Preview Click on File > Save. Actually, you have been doing this periodically up to this point, right? Note: Only the locations of the pieces of your movie are saved, so you can not delete or move them until after your movie is rendered. Reposition the vertical play bar to the beginning of the movie. Click on the View Full Screen button in the lower left corner of the preview monitor, or press F11. Your movie will begin to play filling your screen. When the movie completes playing, press the ESC key to return to the main window. Step 8 Save (Render) Your Movie on the Computer Click on Home and then the down arrow on the Save Movie button. Select For Computer. Name your movie and browse to where you want to save it. o Since this is just an initial incomplete and low resolution version of your final movie, add Short after its file name. 8 Note, in the lower right hand corner of the screen, you can create your own custom setting. Click Save. The movie will be rendered and saved in the selected location. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 8

9 Ripping Music From an Audio CD Using Windows 7 Media Player This document provides the basic information and outlines the major steps in ripping music from an audio CD using the Windows Media Player. Note, these instructions are for Media Player as implemented in Windows 7. Different versions of Windows Media Player have slightly different screens. Step 1 Select Options Start Media Player, as you would any program, by clicking on Start > All Programs and then finding Media Player in the list of programs. Do not put CD in drive yet. The opening screen may look like the one below. If it does, click on Organize > Layout > Show Menu Bar. On the Menu Bar, click on Tools > Options > Rip Music to get the dialog box shown below. 10 Select the folder location where the output file is to be saved by clicking on the Change button. Click on File Name and select Track No., Song Title, and Artist. Change the Format to MP3. Set Audio Quality to 192 kbps Click Devices tab and then the drive letter to verify the CD drive is properly selected. Click Ok Step 2 Load the Audio CD In the screen, select the drive letter for the CD drive you will be using. Insert the audio CD. If it starts to play, click on the Pause button. The screen below appears that displays the songs on the CD. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 10

11 Step 3 Select Songs to be Ripped Click on the small square above the main list to remove its check mark. This removes the check mark to the left of each song. Now click on the square to the left of each song you want to rip. Step 3 Rip the Selected Songs Click on the Rip CD button at the top. The music is copied to a labeled sub-folder of the folder you created. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 11

12 Making a Multimedia Production With Windows Live Movie Maker Part 2 This is the second and final installment in making a movie using Microsoft s Live Movie Maker program. For this exercise, we assume that your pictures and video clips have been added to the filmstrip and placed in the order you wish them to appear. This exercise covers those refinements that will give your movie that professional look. They include adding transitions, background music, and titles/credits. We also cover adding special effects, and editing your video clips to eliminate those sections that did not come out the way you intended when you shot the video. Finally, you will learn how to publish your finished movie in a format you can import into your DVD burning program to make a DVD you can watch on your TV. Step 1 Add Transitions Open your project and view the Filmstrip. Click on Animations on the Menu Bar as shown above. To preview a transition, hover the mouse over its icon. The transitions are for the image immediately to the right of the vertical play bar. Also, the available transitions for the first image are limited. The are many for available for the other images in your movie. To apply a transition at the current position of the play bar, click on it. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 12

13 Step 2 Adjust the Duration of a Transition While the transition button is still highlighted you can adjust its duration. o Click on the down arrow in the Duration button and/or type in the desired time. o Note, the default is 1.50 sec. in LWMM. In PSE Slide Show Editor it is 2.0 seconds. o Also, you can set the same transition/duration for all of the images to the current choice by clicking on the Apply to All button immediately below the Duration button. Step 3 To Repeat Transitions Click on First Picture whose Transition you want to change. Hold down Shift Key and Click on Last Picture whose Transition you want to change. Click on the desired transition. As shown in the figure below, once an image has been assigned a transition, its lower left hand corner has a gray triangle. In the figure images in the top row have been assigned a transition. Those in the bottom row have not. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 13

14 Step 4 Add Effects In many video editing programs the term Effects refers to both basic editing adjustments, as well as special effects. Click on Visual Effects in the Menu Bar. Click on desired image. To preview the desired effect on that image, hover your mouse over the effect. To apply the effect to the selected image, click on the Effect s icon. Note the image now has four small squares in its upper right hand corner. See the figure below. Also note, Effects can be added to your video clips. Step 5 Add a Title at the Beginning of Your Movie Click the first image, then click on Home on the Menu Bar. Click on the Add Title button. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 14

15 The Text Editing screen is displayed. From here you can customize its look any a variety of ways, including how it is displayed and the length of time it is displayed. After the Title slide is incorporated you see the title beneath its thumbnail in the filmstrip. To Add credits at the end of your movie, click on Home on the Menu Bar, and then then the Add Credits button. The screen below appears. You can customize the credits in a similar way is you did for the title, including the animation of the credits. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 15

16 Step 6 Import and Add Background Music Click on Home on the Menu bar, and then click on the first image in the Filmstrip, the title slide. Click on the down arrow in the Add Music icon, add select Add Music at the Current Point as shown below. In the Movie Tasks pane, click on Import Audio or Music. Navigate to the appropriate folder and select the desired song. At the top of the screen there is now a button, Music Tools. That opens a screen from which you can set various options to be applied to the music track, including fading it in and out, and where it is to start and stop. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 16

17 Step 7 Adjust the Background Music Track Avoid it Playing over Video Clip Audio Add the Music at the beginning of the movie, which will play through any video clip in the middle. Position the vertical play bar exactly where the video clip starts. Note the time in seconds conversion may be required. Type this value in the Set End Point using the Music Tools screen Position the play bar at the exact end of the video clip and note its time. Add the desired music and select the Start at This Point in the Add Music icon from the Home screen. The figure below shows the screen after this has been done. Notice there is no green music bar above the video clip s thumbnail. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 17

18 Step 8 Trim a Video Clip One of the major features LWMM has that PSE does not is it can edit the video clip and delete any portion of it. Click on Home from the Menu bar. Click on the thumbnail for the desired video clip. Click on the Video Tools tab at the top of the screen. See the figure below. In the Video Tools screen, click on Trim Tool icon. Note the blue in the center represents what you want to keep ultimately. PVNET-WLMM-Handout-1.doc 18

19 Play the video clip and pause at that point you wish to start the video. Note its time in seconds. Play the video clip to that point where you want to stop it. Again note the time in seconds. Note when a video clip has been selected, the time is shown for that clip in the lower right hand corner of the preview monitor is for the video clip and not for your entire movie. Set these two times in the Start Point and End Point fields respectively. Click on Save Trim. The figure below shows that the edited video will start after about 6.7 sec. after its initial beginning and run to its 15-seconf point. You can also split a video clip at any desired point by position to the point where you want to split the clip into two clips, and clicking on Split icon. Step 9 Save (Publish) Your Movie on the Computer Click on Save Movie down arrows and select how you want save your movie. Select the desired option and follow the screen prompts for that choice.
