1 OUR GIRL SCOUT STORY A History Patch (Cadette/Senior/Ambassador Levels) Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians Purpose: This patch, which was created by the Girl Scout Museum at Daisy s Place, offers troops or individual girls an opportunity to learn about the history of Girl Scouting in the U.S.A. and in the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians. Resources: A Leader s Booklet and resource materials for the five sections below are contained in a Wheelie (a suitcase with wheels) available for checkout at each Service Center. The Internet is also a great resource. 1 - JULIETTE GORDON LOW: THE FOUNDER OF GIRL SCOUTING IN THE USA Read about Juliette Low. See the Resource List and the Wheelie for books, and/or use the Internet to discover information. Then answer all the following questions. a. How did the Civil War impact Juliette and her family? b. Where did she spend the last months of the war? c. Which famous Union General visited her family home? d. What was the cause of Juliette s death? What year was it? e. What did GSUSA establish to honor Juliette Low after her death? TAKE ACTION: Required: The flag ceremony has been an important part of Girl Scout troop meetings since Juliette Low started Girl Scouts. Learn and practice doing flag ceremonies. (You might consider starting each troop meeting with a flag ceremony.) Then, complete any two activities below: a. Look at the vintage uniforms (in the Wheelie, in old handbooks, at a service center, at the Girl Scout Museum at Daisy s Place or the catalog website.) Compare them to current uniforms. Find the one your mother or grandmother might have worn. b. Visit the Girl Scout Museum at Daisy s Place and try on a vintage uniform. (Reservations needed two weeks in advance for try-ons.) c. Have a Juliette Low birthday party or a tea party and serve something that she would have eaten as a girl or adult. d. Teach younger girls the correct way to do a flag ceremony, or conduct a flag ceremony at a GS Council event, School Board meeting or other public meeting. e. 2 2 - THE HISTORY OF GIRL SCOUTING IN THE U.S.A. a. Watch the video, The Golden Eaglet. Discuss how Girl Scouting has changed. b. There are two styles of official membership pins for Girl Scout Juniors through adults, traditional & contemporary. Which one came first the one with the eagle or the one with the faces? c. Where is the correct place to wear your Girl Scout membership pin over your heart or on the other side? d. Where did Juliette Low start Girl Scouts in the United States? What anniversary are we celebrating this year? e. Why was basketball an important activity for early Girl Scout troops? TAKE ACTION: Complete any two activities below: a. Do an art activity to show part of Girl Scout history (older uniforms, camping, semaphore flags, older badges etc.) Neatly print a caption for your work and display it as a learning activity for others. b. Make your own set of semaphore flags, using a material of your choice. Decode the message on the Semaphore and Morse Code Activity Sheet. Use your flags to send a message. c. A text message is a kind of code. Compose a text message of the famous phone call that Juliette made to her cousin. d. Cook a campfire meal like one that early Girl Scouts would have cooked. e. Look in the old handbooks and find an interesting badge. Do at least one of the badge activities. f. Using the Semaphore & Morse Code Reference Sheet, decode this message: WAGGGS: GIRL SCOUTS AS PART OF THE WORLD ORGANIZATION a. What do the letters WAGGGS stand for? (There are three letter G s) b. How many countries are members of the World Association? c. What does each part of the World Trefoil Pin represent and where should it be worn on the uniform? d. Discover how many World Centers there are, where they re located and what they are called. e. Learn information about Thinking Day and what the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund (JLWFF) is. 3 TAKE ACTION: Complete any two activities below: a. Play or teach others a game from one of the WAGGGS member countries. b. Explain to others the meaning of World Thinking Day. Plan and take a leadership part in a Thinking Day activity. c. Plan and hold a ceremony to tell the meaning of the World Trefoil Pin. (The emblem is also on the world flag. You might display that in your ceremony.) d. Prepare and serve food from another country. Locate the country on a globe or world map and make a replica of that country s flag. e. Invite someone who has been to a World Center to speak with your group. Plan ahead by writing down several questions you will ask. f. Learn to sing The World Song. 4 - GIRL SCOUTS OF THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS a. What is the complete name of our Council, and the abbreviation? b. What is your Service Unit, and troop number? c. Find out where the Girl Scout Museum is located and what is in the museum. d. This Council is unique in the United States because we have a Secret City from World War II days. It is Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Since it was a secret, find out what group had to give permission for Girl Scouting to start there. What was different about how their names were put on registration forms? Are Girl Scouts in Oak Ridge still registered in this different way today? e. Research information about the famous Appalachian Trail. Locate it on a map, and if possible take a hike on one part of the trail. f. Visit The Children s Museum of Oak Ridge and/or the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge to learn about The Secret City during World War II days. (The Children s Museum was started by a Girl Scout troop.) 5 - GIRL SCOUTS PRESERVING THE PAST a. What is the highest award a girl can earn in Girl Scouts? What was the highest in Juliette Low s time? b. Read the requirements for earning the Golden Eaglet. What was the last year the Golden Eaglet was awarded? Cadette/Senior/Ambassador 3

4 c. The Girl Scout Promise and Law have changed through the years. Compare the different versions. What important themes have been present even though the words are different? d. There have been four different awards that served as Girl Scouting s highest award. Discover the names of each. e. (Optional) The following women are distinguished Girl Scouts. Choose two of the names and learn why they are special: Betty Jones, Eileen Neiler, Jean Buzzy Biddle, Nancy Stanton, Joyce Maienschein, Jean Blair Dolan. TAKE ACTION: Required: Singing has always been important in Girl Scouting. Learn or help teach some traditional Girl Scout songs. Ex: Make New Friends, The Brownie Smile Song, Girl Scouts Together, When E re You Make A Promise, Taps. Then complete one activity below: a. Create an exhibit about Girl Scouts Past and Present and display it at school, a library, church, store, etc. b. Service has always been a part of Girl Scouting. Juliette Low was concerned about animals, the war effort, and her sister Girl Scouts. What things are you concerned about? Think of a way to give service in your community and carry it out. Submit a photo and caption about the project to a newspaper. c. Create your own idea to teach about Girl Scout history to others. Return ALL contents of the Wheelie to the service center from which you received it. Your deposit will be returned upon verification that all materials were returned and are in good condition.
