1 Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict Undergraduate Course Tue and Thu 11:00-12:15 V Fall 2008 Professor Michael Minkenberg Office Hours: Thursday, 2:00-3:15 This course is a reading and discussion seminar. Based on our reading of major works in the area, the course seeks to explain the varied forms of nationalism, ethnic identity and extremism. To that end, we will bring various psychological, economic, and sociological theories to bear on the origins and the development of nationalist movements and related ethnic conflict. We will attempt to understand the historical phases of nationalist development, from the early cases in Europe (particularly France, Great Britain and Germany) and the United States, through the later European and non-european movements (such as the anti-colonial cases of Africa and much of Asia). This includes also religiously-based movements of the present era in the West and beyond. The course is divided in two sections. In the first section, major theories and concepts will be introduced and critically examined. In the second section, empirical cases of nationalism and ethnic conflict will be addressed and analyzed, with the help of the first section s concepts and literature. The reading for this course is taken from books on sale at the bookstore, books on reserve at NYU Bobst Library and books and articles on blackboard. Readings are by week. Course Requirements: Students are expected to participate in providing short topic-specific oral presentations in the second section ( cases ), including a hand-out, and writing a research paper. They are also required to follow the political news regarding the topics of this course. The final grade will be a composite of the oral presentation and participation (33.3%) and the final paper (66.6%) which is due on December 15.
