2 1 -D s 1-2 Objective Explore, name, and identify threedimensional Materials cube-, cylinder-, cone-, and sphereshaped objects; Content Area Flip Chart, p. 11 Share and Read Display a small giftwrapped box. Say: Hold this present, shaped like a box. Put one hand on the flat top. Put one hand on the flat bottom. This box is called a cube. Repeat with a can, a cone, and a ball. Point out the curved sides of a can, the sharp point and flat base of the cone, and the round shape of the ball. Content Words Display Content Area Flip Chart, page 11. Guide children to name the objects. Which have corners? Which are curved? Help children draw a square around the cube on the chart. Repeat for the sphere, cylinder, and cone. Talk About It Provide children with a variety of gift-wrapped cones, cylinders, spheres, and cubes. Have children identify each object. Then cover each object with a cloth. In front of each covered object, display a corresponding three-dimensional solid figure to indicate each item s shape. Point to each solid figure and identify it--cylinder, cube, sphere, cone. Point to the sphere. Have children recall the real world object shaped like the sphere. Give clues such as, It bounces and we play with it on the playground. Have children remove the cloth to reveal the real world object. Continue for the remaining solid figures. Copyright. 3 1 -D Objectives Explore, name, and identify threedimensional Materials three-dimensional, blindfold Blindfold Exploration Review the following geometric with children, using geometric solids as examples: cylinder, sphere, cone, cube. Teach children how to identify each shape by sense of touch. Begin by closing your eyes or modeling how to wear a blindfold to identify a shape. Wearing a blindfold, hold a wooden or plastic solid from the Math Center. Make sure the solid is at least 2- inches tall. Describe and identify the solid as you touch it. Then place the blindfold on a child. Have the other children select a shape and place it in the child s hand. Prompt the child to describe and identify the shape. For example, Is it round? Does it have sharp corners? If so, how many? For children who struggle, place the shape in the child s hand. Name the shape and have the child repeat. Then describe the shape as the child feels it. Repeat with another shape. Then place one of the in the child s hand to identify. -D Objectives Explore, name, and identify threedimensional Materials pictures, blocks, trade books Extension Activities Use the following activities to reinforce/extend the learning in upcoming days and weeks. Build It! Show children pictures of igloos, castles, zoos, grocery stores, and other buildings or places. Have small groups construct their version of one of the pictures with blocks. Ask children to share their completed structures and describe the and solid figures used. Block Geometry Have children find, identify, and sort blocks in the Block Center by shape. Prompt children to find cylinders, cubes, cones, and spheres. Read and Explore Read a book featuring three-dimensional, such as Cubes, Cones, Cylinders, and Spheres by Tana Hoban or ToddWorld: The Silly Book of by Todd Parr. Ask: How does this [toy] feel when you touch it? What else would feel [soft] like the [bear]? Content Words Pass around objects such as sandpaper, marbles, a stuffed animal and blocks to explain rough, smooth, soft, and hard. Help children to name other objects with the same texture. Ask: How do these [toys] feel different? Introduce a couple of textures a day. Provide small groups with a set of realworld objects in a variety of textures,, and colors--such as colored blocks, tennis balls, marbles, scrubbing sponges, dice, and stuffed toy animals. Say: Look around. What do you see? Something [soft] like a [bear]? What could it be? Ask groups to find the soft object and hold it up. Help them describe it. Repeat using the texture words soft, rough, smooth, and hard. Also, review the shape and color words from Unit 1. Have children share their collages and describe the and textures. Suggest that they pass around their collages for classmates to feel and describe. Encourage responses that use the words sides, points, corner, round, and flat. Say: This shape is a square. It has four sides. Let s count: one, two, three, four. Repeat for circle and triangle. Talk About It Help children use the Attribute Buttons to make new or larger by joining two or more. For example, a child may join a triangle and a square to form a house.
