Teddy Bear s Picnic. Class Change Over

1 It was so lovely to welcome so many of you to the Open Evening on Tuesday night! Far from winding down, staff and children made a real effort to show you all the amazing things they have been learning about and explaining their art work and displays. It is also a real credit to the school and parents that so many of Thythorn children enjoy sporting clubs and competitions, such as Saffron Lane Area Athletics meeting or more local sporting events at the High School. We know it is a manic time of the year for everyone, but we wish everyone a happy Summer holiday and look forward to seeing the children all brimming with enthusiasm in the new Autumn term; especially with our new Year 6! Teddy Bear s Picnic Tuesday 5 th July was very exciting at Thythorn. We welcomed our new September intake for the annual Teddy Bear s picnic. It was lovely to see the new class settling into their classroom and meeting the staff that will be working with them. Class Change Over On Tuesday 12 th July the children will spend the morning in their new classroom with the staff that will be teaching and supporting them. We will welcome Miss Walsh the new Year 3 teacher, who some of you met at the Open Evening and the children have previously met. The new Year 6 are waiting patiently for their new classroom, which is progressing well. They have visited several times to see how it looks.

2 Saffron Lane Sports Event On Tuesday 21 st June a team of Year 4 and Year 5 children took part in the Saffron Lane Sports Event. The children showed great sportsmanship and teamwork skills. Hannah Goodall (Y4) came first place in the 50m sprint. Isabelle Plowman (Y4) came second in her 50m sprint heat. The Year 4 girls were placed second in their 4 x 50m relay race. Alexander Samuel (Y5) competed in the 80m running race and came first place. Tavleen Dhillon (Y5) came second in the throwing competition. Year 5 girls came third in the 5 x 60m relay and Year 5 boys came first in their 5 x 60m relay race. Congratulations to all who took part. Thank you to parents and carers for supporting with the transport, it is very much appreciated. Sports Day On Wednesday 22 nd June we celebrated our Sports Day. The children competed in mixed class teams. It was really nice to see them cheering each other on. It is lovely that so many parents, grandparents and carers attended to support the children. Refreshments were served and the children all had a well deserved ice lolly.

3 Kwik Cricket and Wigston Academy Sports On Thursday 30 th June a team of Year 5 children went to Wigston Academy to compete in a Kwick Cricket competition. The children had been busy practising and really enjoyed the afternoon. On Thursday 7 th July a team from Year 3 and Year 4 competed at Wigston Academy in the annual sports event. The team competed against other feeder schools in running, jumping and throwing. Year 3 Trips Tuesday 7 th June saw Year 3 travel to the Jewry Wall museum in Leicester. The children had an amazing day learning about The Romans and Roman life. They were history detectives finding out information and clues hidden in the museum. They even had a mock battle against the adults wearing helmets and carrying swords and shields. Tuesday 28 th June saw Year 3 at Conkers. First a Ranger explained to the children amazing examples of seed dispersal. It was a hands on activity walking through the forest. The children then created a seed dispersal butterfly, gluing on all the seed pods they found on their forest walk. The children also had a ride on the train, dared to walk the mud walk and played on the adventure playground.

4 Wigston College/Get Doing Dance Show The children who attend the Street Dance after school club on Friday nights will be performing at the Get Doing dance show at Wigston College on Monday 11 th July. The children have been working hard on two dance routines. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to perform on the big stage in front of an audience. Thythorn s Got Talent On Wednesday 13 th July Miss Shepherd and Mrs Podgers will host Thythorn s Got Talent. All children can enter and perform their talent to the rest of the school. It s great to see the children dancing, singing telling jokes and showing off a whole range of interesting talents. Please let Miss Shepherd or Mrs Podgers know if you would like to take part. Any music/cd s etc. used for the performances should be clearly named and handed to the staff on Wednesday morning. Last Day Children will be able to bring in suitable toys and games on the last day, Thursday 14 th July. Please do not send electrical devices or games/toys with small pieces. Your child is responsible for their own items.

5 School Lunches On the last day, Thursday 14 th July, the kitchen will be serving fish and chips. A vegetarian option will also be available. Please make sure your child s school lunches are all paid for by the end of term so that we can settle our accounts with Leicestershire County Council. School lunches for Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be 2.20 per day, per week from 30 th August. Please send the money/cheque in a clearly marked envelope with your child s name, class and days they would like lunches, on a Monday morning. Aylmerton Residential Trips Year 6 will be visiting Aylmerton Field Study Centre in November 2016 and Year 5 in May This is an exciting and informative experience for the children. Just a reminder to keep up with the payments. We know that it is a lot of money to pay out and keeping to the payment plan is a good way of ensuring the trip is paid for in time. You can pay by cash or cheque at any time, the plan is just a suggestion. Year 5 Payment Plan: Deposit 20 th May - 30, 8 th July - 70, 5 th September - 100, 10 th October - 70, 20 th January and 10 th March Year 6 Payment Plan Deposit 13 th May - 30, 11 th July - 70, 5 th September 100 and 10 th October Your help in this matter is very much appreciated.

6 School Policy on Sickness If your child has been physically sick and/or has diarrhoea, can you please ensure that they DO NOT return to school until at least 48 hours after their symptom have gone. This is to ensure that your child is not contagious and that they are no longer infectious to other children. We are encouraging the children to use good hand washing techniques in a further attempt to prevent spread of bugs and illnesses. Thank you for your co-operation. Parking Please be considerate to our neighbours when parking at the school. We are situated in a residential area and need to be considerate to the people who live near to us. The school car park should not be used by parents, at any time, except in an emergency. The Community Support Officers regularly attend the school to help monitor the parking situation. We know at the moment the new build is putting a strain on the limited parking available but hopefully with the new term congestion should ease.
