The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered by the latest School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document. It may be modified by the Executive Headteacher, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title. This job description is intended as a reference document which identifies the main responsibilities and activities of the post holder. It is not a comprehensive statement of procedures and tasks but sets out the main expectations of the school in relation to the postholder s professional responsibilities and duties. 3 Purpose of role The Viking Academy Trust SENCo will lead SEND within our Trust. They will provide professional leadership and be responsible for the day to day efficient management of SEND and will be responsible for the implementation of the SEND policy across the Viking Academy Trust. Description of role The Trust SENCo will work as part of the Trust Leadership Team. They will report to the Executive Headteacher and liaise closely with the Head of each Viking school. Responsibilities The Trust SENCo shall carry out his/her professional duties in accordance with and subject to the Conditions of Appointment as set out in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions document. The post holder will carry out the duties of the Trust SENCo in consultation, where appropriate, with the Executive Headteacher, Trust Leadership Team, Trustees, Local Governors, school staff and its parents and carers. The document sets out the main responsibilities of the post under the headings: 1. Leadership 2. Teaching and learning 3. Monitoring, assessment, planning and tracking 4. Communication and reporting 5. Professional knowledge and development SENCO will have overall responsibility for: Leading, managing, developing and maintaining high-quality special educational needs (SEN) provision Modelling effective teaching, to coach and train colleagues Keeping all paperwork including records and policies, up to date and actioned, as appropriate The document sets out the key accountabilities in the role. For example, in relation to teaching and learning, the SENCO will be responsible for: Identifying and disseminating the most effective teaching approaches for pupils with SEN Collecting and interpreting specialist assessment data on SEN to inform practice Viking Academy Trust: Job Description TRUST SENCo 3

4 Working with pupils, class teachers and key stage managers to ensure realistic and challenging expectations of pupils with SEN Monitoring vulnerable groups and targeting interventions Liaising and communicating with outside agencies Managing and up-keeping children's SEN files Referrals to outside agencies These accountabilities will be delivered by: Formulating the aims and objectives of the Viking Academy Trust in partnership with other members of the Trust Leadership Team Working with others to create a shared strategic vision for inclusion Inspiring confidence in staff across the Trust in relation to children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) Responsibilities of the SENCO in the Code of Practice Paragraph 6.90 (on pages ) of the SEND Code of Practice sets out the main responsibilities of the SENCO. The document says that SENCOs may be expected to: Oversee the day-to-day operation of the school s SEN policy Co-ordinate provision for children with SEN Liaise with the relevant designated teacher where a looked after pupil has SEN Advise on the graduated approach to providing SEN support Advise on the deployment of the school s delegated budget and other resources to meet pupils needs effectively Liaise with parents of pupils with SEN Liaise with early years providers, other schools, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals, and independent or voluntary bodies Act as a key point of contact for external agencies, especially the LA and its support services Liaise with potential next providers of education to ensure pupils and their parents are informed about options and a smooth transition is planned Work with the Executive Headteacher, Heads of School and the Local Advisory Body (LAB) to ensure that the school meets its responsibilities under the Viking Academy Trust: Job Description TRUST SENCo 4

5 Equality Act (2010) with regard to reasonable adjustments and access arrangements Ensure that the school keeps the records of all pupils with SEN up to date Be the nominated lead for coordinating provision for pupil with medical needs. Main Purpose of the Job To lead, manage and effectively deploy staff and resources within the SEN provision (including pupils with medical needs) To lead, monitor and evaluate the development of learning and teaching strategies for pupils with SEN To ensure that staff are provided with relevant information and training relating to the support of these pupils To lead on raising standards of attainment and achievement with SEND pupils in all year groups and ability profiles To ensure that paperwork relating to students with SEN meets statutory requirements To maintain appropriate relationships with parents of pupils with SEN and with relevant external organisations To take a full role within the Viking Academy Trust as a Senior leader Accountability Ensure that there is a strategic overview of provision for students with SEND across the Trust which maximises their potential To deliver the Trust s SEN policy and ensure the unique needs of each school is met in the individual school policy documents To monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching in interventions of pupils with SEN To monitor the effectiveness of intervention for pupils with SEN by outcome Liaise with individual school Leadership Teams to ensure the SEN support team (eg FLO, LM) and Teaching Assistants are effectively deployed and working directly with pupils for maximum impact Ensure that the senior leadership team and LAB are informed about current good practice and legislation relating to SEN and inclusion and that policies and practices relating to SEN are up to date Liaise effectively with staff across the Trust, including pastoral, attendance and behaviour support teams, to ensure high quality provision for pupils with SEN Lead on the development and implementation of inclusive practice throughout the Trust and liaise with teachers across Viking schools, including delivering appropriate training when necessary Viking Academy Trust: Job Description TRUST SENCo 5

6 Maintain an accurate SEN register for each school and ensure provision maps meet the needs of pupils and statutory provision at all times, including overseeing the identification and review of pupils with SEN Ensure that Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs) and other relevant documentation relating to students with SEN are regularly reviewed with pupils, parents and other agencies and recommendations made are implemented Ensure that concessions for pupils with SEN are considered and applied for in order for fair access with regard to end of Key Stage SATs and other statutory testing Monitor, analyse and report on assessment information and Key Stage results for pupils with SEN to ensure that they make excellent progress Prepare for statutory assessments and ensure that all pupils with a statement of education have an annual review Lead and manage interventions relating to English, Maths and EAL Lead and manage the transition of SEN students from Years 6 to 7 and Years 2 to 3 where appropriate. Performance Appraisal The post holder will participate in the Trust s Performance Appraisal Cycle following the guidelines established for staff working on the Leadership Pay Scale Recording and Assessment To provide or contribute oral or written assessments, reports and references as required for individual pupils. 7 Leadership To support the development and implementation of the vision and strategic direction of the Trust reflecting its educational and moral aspirations and values To provide strategic leadership of provision for pupils with SEN across the Trust To lead the process of monitoring and evaluation of SEN in line with agreed Trust policies and procedures, including evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria. To seek/implement modification and improvement where required To implement internal QA systems within SEN regarding tracking of pupil attainment, achievement, experience and support To promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and provide guidance and advice as necessary. To participate in PDMs (Professional Development Meetings) which relate to curricular, guidance, administrative and organisational issues; specifically, where related to SEND Pastoral Care To communicate and consult with parents of pupils and with other appropriate persons and bodies outside the school, as appropriate. To participate in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described, within the school s directed time schedule. To promote the general progress and well-being of individual SEND pupils To identify and celebrate SEND pupils attainment and achievement in all aspects of school life To monitor Home Learning, ensuring that it contributes to SEND pupils achievement To attend parent/carer evenings, information evenings and other events which the parents / carers of SEND pupils are attending Safeguarding: The post holder will be Senior Safeguarding Designated Person Be keenly aware of the responsibility for safeguarding children and to lead the application of the Safeguarding and Safe Practices policy within the Trust. Ensure compliance with each school s Safeguarding Policy in order to ensure the welfare of children and young persons To support safeguarding issues relating to SEND students and ensure that as Senior Designated Person, you are fully informed of concerns To lead on the monitoring of SEND student progress, safety and support for students on the safeguarding register Viking Academy Trust: Job Description TRUST SENCo 7

8 To lead on the provision to guidance of SEND students on safe guarding and safe practices To liaise with each school s DCPC To liaise with outside agencies as appropriate, including playing a lead role in Child in Need meetings Other duties and responsibilities To play a full part in the life of the Viking community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage staff and pupils across the Trust to follow this example To contribute to the review of Trust policies as appropriate. To provide support for pupil s emotional and social needs by encouraging and modelling positive behaviour in line with each school s Behaviour policy and demonstrating high expectations of work and behaviour. To manage own record keeping in respect of individual pupils development, progress and attainment as appropriate. To assist with the general pastoral care of the pupils, including helping pupils who are sick, distressed or injured. To attend relevant meetings and participate in training opportunities and performance appraisal as required. To participate in agreed schemes of teacher appraisal, to include all aspects of in-service training To develop links with Local Advisory Body, LA and neighbouring schools. To comply with Trust policies and procedures with regard to Health and Safety, equal opportunities, race equality, conduct and dress. To attend training as and when necessary. To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required.
