6 BUSINESS MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS Course Objective: The aim of the paper is to expose the students to the application of mathematics and statistics in business decisions. Unit 1 Functions: Concepts & Types. Elementary application for function (Linear & Quadratic & Single Variable Function only) Quadratic Equation & Its solution by factorization & formulae methods logarithms: meaning of logarithms of a number to a given base a,a>0,a=0,laws of logarithms including change of base exponential function,applications of logarithms and exponential function to problems of compound interest,growth and decay (depreciation). Unit II Brief introductions of Matrices, Functions, Types of functions, properties of functions, pigeonhole principal,composition of functions, Limits and continuity; basic concept, limit of a sequence Derivative of a function; Concept & Significance, Derivative as a Slope, Derivative as marginal function, Derivative of polynomials, logarithmic and exponential Unit III Statistics a conceptual frame work Statistical enquiry, collection of data, Classification, Seriation and tabulation of data. Diagrammatic and Graphic presentation of data. Measures of central tendency: mean, median, mode. Measures of dispersion-range, mean deviation, quartile deviation Standard deviation and variance. Co-efficient of variation and variance of combined series. Unit IV Interpolation and Extrapolation: meaning assumptions, importance and utility. Methods of interpolation and extrapolation- Graphic, parabolic curve fitting, Langrange s and Newton's methods Index number-user and types, Problems in the construction of index number. 8 BASIC ACCOUNTING Course Objectives: The Course has been designed to acquaint students with the Accounting Practices to be followed in the Business Industry. It will lead them to understand Accounting System for measuring, processing and communicating financial information. Unit I Introduction: Theoretical Framework: Meaning, Scope and Usefulness of Accounting; Branches of Accounting; Bases of Accounting (Cash, Accrual or Mercantile and Mixed or Hybrid Basis); Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); Concepts and Conventions; Double entry book keeping system (Basic accounting equation, meaning of assets, liabilities, equity, revenue and expenses); Capital and Revenue Transactions: capital and revenue expenditures, capital and revenue receipts. Unit II Accounting Cycle: Recording of Transaction: Journal and Sub-Division of Journal, Ledger and preparation of Trial Balance. Final Accounts: Preparation of Financial Statements of Sole Proprietorship Business Entities - Manufacturing, Trading, Profit &Loss A/c and Balance Sheet (with and without adjustments). Accounting for Non-for-Profit Organizations: Preparation of Income and Expenditure Account and Balance Sheet from Receipts and Payments Account. Unit III Accounting for Depreciation: Concept and Meaning of Depreciation; Depreciation and Analogous Terms (Depletion, Obsolescence and Amortization); Need for Depreciation; Factors in Measurement of Depreciation; Methods for Computation of Depreciation (viz. Straight Line Method-SLM and Written Down Value Method-WDVM/Diminishing Balance Method) and Accounting Treatment of Depreciation. Provisions and Reserves: Meaning & Concept.
