2 COURSE INFORMATION Course Description This program is a six-week training course designed to prepare students to enter the tractor-trailer driver marketplace at an entry level driving position. Included in the training is classroom instruction relating to federal regulations governing commercial motor vehicle operation, inspection procedures, proper maintenance practices and vehicle safety; Hands-on lab practice at the backing range learning to master a variety of backing skills; and, hands-on road driving instruction. Students can expect to pull loaded van trailers under a variety of conditions, including two-lane roads, expressways, night driving, hilly terrain and driving city streets during heavy traffic. Students can expect to spend at least 45 hours behind the wheel on the backing range and road driving combined, logging approximately 30 hours or 1000 miles of road driving. Course Titles TTDT 100- Basic Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation TTDT 125- Preventive Maintenance TTDT 150- Tractor-Trailer Basic Controls TTDT 175- Tractor-Trailer Road Driving Prerequisites 1) Valid Operator s License (upon registration) 2) Copy of Motor Vehicle Record (upon registration) 3) Ability to pass a DOT Physical and Drug Screen (completed in Week 1) 4) Class A CDL Learner s Permit (completed no later than the end of Week 2) Texts and Resources 1) Indiana CDL Manual-Skills and Knowledge- Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles 2) Tractor-Trailer Driver Training Manual (2 nd edition)* 3) Free Practice Tests 4) Free Practice Tests *Students will receive the Tractor-Trailer Driver Training Manual (2 nd edition) for use with classroom instruction. Please note: the textbooks are not student s to keep and they must be returned upon completion of the TTDT program. Please ensure that the textbooks are properly taken care of. Failure to return the textbooks or damaged textbooks will result in a fee of $50 and will delay issuance of the final TTDT certification. If students are interested in purchasing a textbook, please see the instructor. Required Materials Every student should be prepared for class each day with the following materials: Black ink pen and pencil Calculator Notepad Log Book All handouts and books given to you by your classroom instructor 2 P a g e

3 Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Test Requirements The BMV requires a series of tests that must be completed and successfully passed. The following outlines the tests and when you will be required to take them: CDL Class A Learner s Permit Written Test: General Knowledge50 Questions Air Brakes 25 Questions Combination Vehicles 20 Questions Must be completed no later than the end of Week 2 Optional Tests (Endorsements): Hazardous Materials 30 Questions (required by most carriers)* Doubles and Triples20 Questions Tank Vehicles 20 Questions Can be completed throughout the six week training course *While the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) test is free, obtaining the endorsement requires an application and fingerprinting along with an $86.50 application fee. Please note that this fee is NOT included in your tuition cost. State Skills Test Pre-Trip Backing Exercises Road Test The CDL skills test will be conducted at a third party test site after all course work has been completed. The cost of the test is $100/each attempt and is NOT included in your tuition cost. Costs The following outlines additional costs in addition to the TTDT tuition that the student will be responsible for paying: Motor Vehicle Record $4 CDL Driving Permit $16 Hazmat Endorsement $86.50 State Skills Test $100 (each attempt) CDL License $30 (after State Test) 3 P a g e

4 Course Schedule TTDT 100 Basic Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation Classroom Instruction Weeks 1-2 -Quizzes -Assessment (1) *Must score 80% or higher on all quizzes and assessment TTDT 125 Preventive Maintenance Classroom Instruction Weeks 2-4 -Quizzes -Assessment (1) *Must score 80% or higher on all quizzes and assessment TTDT 150 Tractor-Trailer Basic Controls Backing Range Weeks 1-6 -Straight Line (10 hours) -Off-set (10 hours) -Parallel (10 hours) -Assessment (1) *All hours are approximate TTDT 175 Tractor-Trailer Road Driving Road Driving Weeks 3-6 -Road Driving (30 hours) -Assessment (1) *All hours are approximate Daily Record and Log Book Students are required to follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules and regulations. Students are required to keep an accurate daily record and log book every day that they use the tractor-trailer equipment. Completed forms must be submitted to your instructor daily. Equipment Security It is critical that the equipment used in the TTDT program is properly taken care of and secured. All trucks must be locked upon completion of the day and keys should be given to the instructor(s) before leaving. DOT Physicals DOT Physicals are conducted on Wednesday during the first week of class. The DOT Physical is covered in your tuition costs. Forklift Certification A two-day forklift certification training is included in your tuition costs. The forklift training is scheduled to be held Thursday and Friday during the second week of class. While not required, it is highly encouraged that all students complete the forklift certification, even if they have previous experience driving a forklift. If a student chooses not to participate in the forklift training course, they are still required to be present on both Thursday and Friday and can study independently. State CDL Skills Test The culmination of the six-week TTDT program ends with the State CDL Test: Tests are scheduled during the first week of class in order to ensure a test slot is secured after the six weeks of training is completed 4 P a g e

5 The instructor will schedule the first test in order to coordinate the use of VU LTEC equipment. If a student wishes to use the test site s truck, they will be required to schedule their own test and a VU instructor will not be available to participate As test dates draw nearer, the instructor will attempt to coordinate test sites, dates, and times with students Students are responsible for the state CDL skills test exam fee ($100/per attempt). Students receiving a voucher for the exam (example: WorkOne, Vocational Rehab, etc.) are responsible for coordinating with the applicable individual at the respective agency to ensure the voucher is prepared for the date of the scheduled test. Students must have this coordinated by the end of week four and provide the instructor with proof that this has been completed (example: from case manager, voucher, etc.). If a student is self-paying the $100, the student must have proof of this by week four as well. Students must pass the four course assessments within the TTDT Program (100, 125, 150 and 175) in order to attempt the CDL State Skills Test with VU equipment and instructor. VU LTEC is committing to provide students with an instructor and equipment for the first attempt at the test. Any additional attempts using equipment or instructors will take in to account attendance, grades, and availability. VU LTEC is not obligated to provide equipment and instructors for any additional attempts. If a student fails to show up for their designated test date, the student is required to call the test site in order to cancel the test and incur any applicable fees. If VU LTEC is charged the cancellation fee, the student will be required to reimburse VU LTEC for this expense. If the CDL State Skills Test is canceled by the student without proper notice to VU LTEC staff and/or test site (i.e. failure to show up on the day of the test, or canceled with limited notice), it relieves VU LTEC of any further responsibility related to testing (i.e. use of the VU LTEC equipment and instructor). Certificates and Licenses The CDL certificate of program completion and forklift license will be given to students upon completion of the CDL Tractor-Trailer program when all requirements have been met. Students must bring a copy of their CDL license to VU LTEC in order for the certificate and forklift license to be issued. CLASSROOM POLICIES Attendance Your daily attendance is essential for success in this six-week program. The course content covered within the six-weeks of this program is significant and failure to be present each day will inhibit you from retaining all the information necessary for successful completion. The following outlines policies related to attendance. Failure to abide by these policies may result in dismissal from the program: 5 P a g e

6 Class begins each day at 8:00 a.m., unless otherwise communicated by the instructor. Students are required to be on time, every day and prepared to learn with all required course materials Class is held Monday-Friday each week, unless otherwise communicated by the instructor Excused Absences: Excused absences will be approved on a case-by-case basis. The instructor recognizes that there are circumstances in which a student may not be able to attend on a particular day, due to a personal conflict. However, the student must notify the instructor generally within 24 hours to receive an excused absence. The instructor will have the right to determine whether the absence is excused. Unexcused Absences: A maximum of one (1) unexcused absences over the sixweek training program will be granted. Any unexcused absence past this threshold will result in review by the instructor and Director of VU LTEC and may be cause for dismissal from the program. The program has been designed to be completed within six-weeks. If additional time past the six-weeks is needed by the student due to missing instructional days as a result of absences, the student may be subject to additional fees for instruction past the six-weeks. Attire Appropriate attire must be worn at all times. Please keep in mind the following: Open toed shoes may not be worn during training No tank-tops, sleeveless shirts, or inappropriate clothing may be worn (as determined by VU LTEC) Dress for the climate! o Winter: Dress warm enough to be outside or in the warehouse for long periods of time o Spring/Summer: Use sunscreen, bring and drink plenty of liquids o Rain: Bring rain gear Standards of Student Behavior Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit upon the school, community, and themselves Students may not, at any time, consume alcoholic beverages or use illegal drugs Students convicted of trafficking or possession of drugs or alcohol will be dismissed immediately Students should not exhibit disruptive behavior Knives, guns, or other weapons are unallowable Any actions considered unsafe will not be permitted and may lead to dismissal Additional information regarding Vincennes University s standards of student behavior can be found at the following location: Technology 6 P a g e

7 Computers: Computers provided by the school are for educational purposes only. Students are not permitted to use computers for personal use (example: social media, , internet browsing, etc.) The faculty computer is for faculty use only. There are times where students may be permitted to use the computer for instructional purposes; however, please ask permission before doing so. Cell phones/other electronic devices: The use of cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed during training. Particularly, under no circumstance should cell phones be out (i.e. texting, talking on the phone, checking , playing games, etc.) during operation on or around the truck. Failure to follow this policy may result in immediate dismissal. Simulators: Two simulators have been provided in the classroom for students to utilize for additional hands-on experience. Students will receive training during the first week of class on how to use the simulator. Students are encouraged to use the simulators as much as possible. The simulators are an effective way to practice clutch/rpm usage during shifting on a manual transmission. GENERAL POLICIES Class Cancellations In the event that class needs to be cancelled, your instructor will call or text you. Please ensure that your instructor has a updated phone number. Cleanliness of Work Area and Trucks It is the expectation that both the work area that students occupy (classrooms), as well as the VU LTEC equipment (trucks) are taken care of. This includes: Cleaning up the classroom at the end of the day: Chairs should be pushed in and tables should be back in a row formation. Trash should be thrown away and student resources placed back where you found them. Cleaning up after meals: Please ensure that you have cleaned up your area after you have eaten lunch or snacks. Truck: The truck should be cleaned upon ending the day (i.e. trash, coffee cups, water/soda bottle, etc. must be removed from the truck). Firearms and Weapons Firearms and weapons are prohibited on school property (this includes facilities and equipment). Parking 7 P a g e

8 All students must park in the front of the building and enter through the lobby area. Please do not park in the back of the building, as it presents significant safety hazards. Smoking As a reminder, VU LTEC is a college campus and does not prohibit smoking on school grounds. If you smoke or use any type of smokeless tobacco, this must be done off of school property. At a minimum, you must be 8 feet away from all buildings occupying this industrial park. School property also constitutes VU LTEC tractor-trailers; therefore, smoking or using smokeless tobacco products are strictly prohibited in the VU LTEC tractor-trailers. Student Break Area Students typically have a minute lunch break (depending on the day s schedule). A microwave and refrigerator is located in the Northeast corner of the building. In addition, vending machines are also available in this location. VU LTEC Office Area If you need assistance from a staff member at VU LTEC, please come to the front desk and speak with the receptionist or ring the bell and someone will come up to assist you. Please refrain from walking back in to the office area without permission from a staff member.
