Toot Hill Work Experience Programme th - 22rd October 2010

Introduction TOOT HILL WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME I am pleased to confirm that the Work Experience Programme will take place in the Autumn term of Year 11 and will start on Monday 18th October, completing on Friday 22nd October It is a statutory requirement that all pupils in their last year of full time education have the opportunity to take part in work experience and we strongly encourage all pupils to take part in this programme. We want to ensure that all our pupils are fully equipped for their venture into the world of work. All pupils will have support and guidance in putting together a letter of application and writing their CV for their placement. All students need to give some thought to the type of placement they require and looking at the NEBA website may help. Some students have already organised their work experience through their own contacts. I am here to support and guide all pupils in obtaining the right work placement and I am available in the Academy Office from Monday - Thursday between 9am and 3pm. Please come along to see me at breaktimes/lunchtime. I am also available on or Best wishes Fiona Farmer Business Links Coordinator

Preparing for Work Experience In order to gain the most from your placement it should support you in one of the following areas:- a particular subject that you are studying a career choice or interest to complete a project or coursework to develop some of your skills to find out more about a work environment Once you have decided on your placement you will need to find out as much as you can about the Company before you go. We have had some excellent feedback on our students this year and companies have taken the time to write and tell us what excellent students we have here at the school. This is a great credit to the individual students, parents as well as the school. A lot of the companies are happy to give support and guidance by providing references after the work placement and also some pupils have gained part time employment. I will continually be developing the spreadsheet of companies who are willing to offer work experience to our pupils and I am happy for pupils to find their own placements by looking on the Nottingham Business Education website (NEBA) or through their own contacts. Health and Safety All employers must hold Employers Liability Insurance, Public Liability Insurance and must inform their insurance companies that they are taking part in the work experience scheme. All employers will be Health and Safety checked by the Nottingham Education Business Alliance (NEBA) prior to the placement. Most companies will provide an induction on the day or will contact you prior to the placement to attend an interview/induction day. All

companies have to do a risk assessment and may send a copy to students and parents for signature. 7 STEPS TO OBTAINING A SUCCESSFUL PLACEMENT 1. Decide what sort of placement you would like and do some research on the companies. 2. There are three main places to look in order to get an idea of the types of jobs available for work experience a) The NEBA website. The website is: user name is toot password is student If you choose from the NEBA database please ring the Company to ask if they will take you on placement. Once agreed please send your letter of application and cv. b) The school list (see enclosed) This details the companies that we are already working with us and have confirmed they have placements available for us. If you find a company that you re interested in, please inform Mrs Farmer which placement you would like from the list and contact the company directly by sending your letter of application and cv. This place will be reserved for you by Mrs Farmer pending confirmation. c) Your own research, or contacts through friends and/or relatives If you find a placement which is not on NEBA or the school list please

inform Mrs Farmer by completing the application form. For all 3 options please complete the Application for Work Experience form and send to Mrs Farmer. (Copy enclosed) 3. Ensure that you are able to either get a lift or public transport to your placement. 4. Once your placement is confirmed and the Health and Safety check has been done by NEBA a letter will be sent to your parent/guardian confirming the placement. Parent/guardians will be responsible for arranging suitable transport and accommodation if necessary. 5. Mrs Farmer will put up a list of all confirmed placements in the Year area which will be frequently updated. 6. Please ring your chosen placement on return to school in September to ask about what you need to do on your first day and to ask about appropriate clothing. 7. If at anytime during the process you or your parents need advice or guidance please contact Mrs Farmer. ALL WORK PLACEMENTS NEED TO BE ORGANISED BY 1ST JULY PLEASE DO NOT MISS THIS DEADLINE! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I have to do work experience? Yes - it is a statutory obligation and the Government and school believe that it is an essential part of your education during KS4. Where can I do my work experience? You can look at the school list and choose a placement from the list,

NEBA database or alternatively maybe you or your parents have contacts where you could do your placement. It is not necessary to stay in the Nottingham area as pupils have gone on placements out of the area and stayed with relatives. However your parents will need to take responsibility for accommodation and travel. What happens if the Company is a sole worker and does not have the relevant insurance? I am afraid you will be unable to take the placement as you and the Company will not be covered by insurance. What makes good work experience? It is important that you choose a work experience placement that you are going to enjoy for the week. It is a long time to spend somewhere and be unhappy. It does not necessarily have to be what you want to do when you leave school but it does need to be something you enjoy doing. What do you get out of work experience? an interesting week giving you an insight into work an opportunity to do something you enjoy. possibly the opportunity to get part time work. references and advice on progressing your chosen career. relevant working experience for your cv when applying for jobs and a university place. How do I get there? It is your responsibility to ensure you can get to your placement on time. The cost of transport will be covered by your parents so please make sure they are happy with the location.

What are my hours of work? The hours of work will be as specified by the Company, You are allowed to work shifts if the Company operates in this way but you are not allowed to work more than 8 hours per day or after 10pm. What do I wear? Prior to your placement you will need to ring your Company and ask about the standard of dress. What happens if I am unhappy? If you find you have a problem or unhappy during the week and you are unable to resolve it with your supervisor then please contact the school. What if I am ill? If you are ill and unable to attend work please call your Supervisor at the Company and also call school as normal. Any other questions? Please see Mrs Farmer who is available in the Academy Office Monday- Thursday 9am-3pm. Mrs Farmer s telephone number is

SOME FEEDBACK FROM PUPILS I now know how important it is to get qualifications! A good placement with lots of opportunities Having a great time - fully supported by all the staff Amazing lunches! I enjoyed designing and printing posters for display I enjoyed talking to customers I feel my week went really well and I enjoyed it very much I was treated like an adult and had to be responsible for myself I want to work in IT and it was good to hear what the job is really like and what qualifications I need SOME FEEDBACK FROM COMPANIES Rushcliffe Country Park Your pupil was polite and pleasant to all members of staff. We were very pleased to have him work with us

Nottingham Trent University May I say what a credit and an ambassador your pupil was for Toot Hill School. I and the rest of the placements team were greatly impressed by his intelligence, eruditeness and willingness to contribute to all tasks presented to him Lady Bay Dental Practice I would like to say your pupil was a credit to the school and we wish her well with her studies and if she needs any more work experience or references please contact us COMMENTS FROM PARENTS I think my son benefitted from his placement and enjoyed it. The good feedback has boosted his confidence. It was good experience for him as he had to get himself to work and on time every day and be responsible for himself My son was very nervous on his first day but came home saying how much he enjoyed it and how friendly everyone was in the office. As the week progressed he grew in confidence and feels that this is the job he would like to do in the future
