2 Directions for Applying Malarkey Right Start UDL GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Install Malarkey s Right Start UDL (Right Start ) underlayment according to building code and local amendments. To qualify for any applicable warranty protection and obtain stated coverage for the roofing system, these printed instructions must be followed. We assume no responsibility for damage to the underlayment or water damage to the roof deck or building interior prior to installation of the finished roofing system, or for leaks due to improper application or failure to properly prepare the surface. IMPORTANT ALWAYS wear fall protection when working on a roof. Underlayments can be slippery, particularly when wet or covered with frost. Be careful when walking on them. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Product Use: Right Start is a Flexor SBS polymer modified fiberglass underlayment suitable for use as a water-resistant underlayment or dry-in sheet for steep slope roofing applications to include asphalt shingles, roof tile*, and wood shakes and shingles. * Installation of underlayments under concrete or clay roof tile have specific installation requirements; see tile roofing manufacturer, adopted building code, and/or the Tile Roofing Institute s Installation Guides. Contact Malarkey s Technical Services Department for help with the use of Right Start at (800) or (503) , weekdays 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Composition and Materials: Right Start is manufactured on a durable fiberglass mat, impregnated and coated on both sides with Flexor SBS polymer modified asphalt, and surfaced with a mineral release material. Precautions: Store the rolls on end to prevent them from flattening. Right Start is constructed with a fiberglass mat that has dimensional memory, meaning the underlayment may return to its rolled shape if not fully relaxed before fastening. Underlayment applied in this condition can start to buckle and develop wrinkles. Underlayment is especially prone to buckling during cold night/warm day cycles. Malarkey recommends allowing Right Start to warm up when installing in colder weather. Unroll the roll to the desired length, and allow it to relax for 15 to 20 minutes prior to installation. It can be cut into shorter lengths and laid flat to absorb heat from the sun. In some instances and despite steps taken to prevent them, buckles may still appear. These will require the underlayment be cut at the buckle and overlaid with an additional layer (or layers) of underlayment depending on the number of plies. In some cases, the underlayment will have to be removed, repositioned or replaced. Failure to correct defects will eventually telegraph through to the finished roof covering and is not a manufacturing defect. Malarkey is not responsible for objectionable appearance should this occur. Roof decks should be sound, smooth (free of protrusions), and meet adopted building code requirements. Sweep the deck clean of dirt and debris. Minimum approved slope is 2" (51 mm) per 12" (305 mm). To prevent harmful condensation or heat buildup, air must circulate freely under the roof deck. Install roof vents at ridges and eaves. Building codes require one square foot of free ventilation to each 150 ft 2 (1 m m 2 ) of attic area or one square foot/300 ft 2 (1 m m 2 ) if 50% ventilation is provided near the ridge. All roof structures must have enough ventilation to prevent entrapment of moisture-laden air behind roof sheathing. Ventilation provisions must meet or exceed current FHA or HUD requirements and adopted building codes. Right Start is not intended as a permanently-exposed roofing surface but can be left uncovered for up to 30 days if necessary before the primary roof covering is installed. 1 MALARKEY RIGHT START UDL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
3 Right Start is not made for use under metal roof systems. APPLICATION Drip Edge Flashing: In accordance with 2015 International Building Code, Section , and 2015 International Residential (Building) Code, Section R , install non-corrosive, 26-gauge, sheet metal drip edge flashing (drip edge) along eave and rake edges. Install drip edge with dimensions large enough to both position the top flange of the metal 2" (51 mm) back from the edge of the roof deck, and extend outward, down over the edge. Apply drip edge first along the eaves, and once Right Start is in place, follow by flashing the rakes (drip edge installed atop the underlayment). Secure with roofing nails, centered on the top flange at 8" (203 mm) to 10" (254 mm) on center, or per adopted local building code. Always lay underlayment courses parallel to the eaves. Install the initial course flush to the rake and along the eave; overhang the eave drip edge 1 4" - 3 8" (6-10 mm). Continue working up the roof, subsequent courses overlapping the preceding a minimum of 2" (51 mm). End laps in the same course should be 6" (152 mm), and staggered 6' (1.8 m) apart in subsequent courses. Extend Right Start 6" (152 mm) over hips, ridges and valleys. At roof-to-wall transitions, lap the underlayment a minimum of 3" (76 mm) up the vertical wall and fasten. Mechanically fasten sufficiently to hold Right Start in place and work safely until shingles are applied or per adopted building code. Once the top of that expanse of roof is reached, apply drip edge flashing 4"+ SLOPE to the LAYOUT rakes, NO over ICE the DAM ends of Right Start. (See Figure 1) PROTECTION For the rake drip edge, start at the corner near the eave, and work your way up, lapping subsequent lengths of flashing over the lower pieces by a minimum of 2" (51 mm). Be sure to overlap the eave drip edge, too. Underlayment Fastening Instructions: Good roofing practice dictates the primary roof covering be installed as soon as possible to minimize the chance of blow-off and/or leaks. The extent to which underlayment must be fastened is determined by several factors: 2"-4" OVERLAP DEPENDING ON PRODUCT -INSTALLED ON TOP SINGLE LAYER RIGHT START UDL, SECURESTART OR ARCTIC SEAL Your climate region and related wind speeds Performance expected of the underlayment should a blow-off of the primary roof covering occur Degree of roof slope How long the underlayment will remain exposed before the primary roof covering is applied Safety Under asphalt shingles in most situations, it s advisable to install just enough fasteners to hold the underlayment firmly in place and work safely (or per adopted building code) until shingles can be applied. Where more extreme weather conditions exist, adopted building codes may require specific attachment. INSTALLATION IN NON-ICE DAM REGIONS 4:12 Slopes and Greater A single layer of Right Start is all that s required for slopes 4:12 (4" [102 mm] per 12" [305 mm]) and greater. Figure 1 - Application of Right Start UDL on Roof Slopes 4:12 and Greater (Non-Ice Dam Regions) -WHEN USING SECURESTART 1030 UNDERLAYMENT, INSTALL OVERLAPPING THE PRECEDING SHEET 3 INCHES; ARCTIC SEAL 401, 4". Slopes 2:12 Up to 4:12 A double layer of Right Start is required for slopes 2:12 (2" [51 mm] per 12" [305 mm]) up to 4:12 STEEP (4" [102 SLOPE mm] 1 per 12" [305 mm]). Start at a lower corner of roof and begin by applying a 20¾" (527 mm) wide 1 OWNER: starter strip of Right Start SUBMITTAL NO: along the eave (first lay line past the center of the sheet shows where to cut). 1 For roof slopes 2:12 up to 4:12, building code calls for covering the deck with an approved underlayment applied with overlaps 1" greater than half the width of the sheet (i.e., HALF-WIDTH + 1"). With Right Start s width at " (1 m), its HALF-WIDTH + 1" measurement is approximately 20¾" (527 mm). 2 MALARKEY RIGHT START UDL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
4 The starter strip should overhang the drip edge 1 4" - 3 8" (6-10 mm) but be positioned flush to the rake and nailed sufficiently to hold in place. Follow by applying a full-width sheet on top, completely overlapping the starter strip. Side laps in courses to follow are each weather-lapped 20¾" (527 mm) over the preceding courses, leaving an exposure of " (473 mm). End laps are 6" (152 mm) as before and staggered 6' (1.8 m) apart in subsequent courses. Extend Right Start 6" (152 mm) over hips, ridges and valleys. At roof-to-wall transitions, lap the underlayment a minimum of 3" (76 mm) up the vertical wall and fasten. building code) until shingles are applied. Once the top of that expanse of roof is reached, apply drip edge flashing to the rakes, over the ends of Right Start 2"-4" SLOPE UNDERLAYMENT NO ICE DAM. (See Figure 2) PROTECTION Continue installing self-adhering underlayment up the roof as necessary to a point not less than 24" (610 mm) past the interior warm inside wall of the house or above the expected level of ice dams or according to building code requirements. Side laps in overlying courses of self-adhering can be lapped to either the 2" (51 mm) lay line or the 4" (102 mm) lay line. Firmly hand-roll these overlaps to ensure a complete, watertight bond. Follow this with full-width courses of Right Start, the first lapped 6" (152 mm) over the self-adhering, and the rest with 2" (51 mm) side laps, on up the roof. End laps are 6" (152 mm) as before and staggered 6' (1.8 m) apart in subsequent courses. At roof-to-wall transitions, lap Right Start (or selfadhering) a minimum of 3" (76 mm) up the vertical wall and fasten. building code) until shingles are applied " OVERLAP FOR UDL *ARCTIC SEAL 401 IS SUBJECT TO APPLICABLE CODES: INSTALLATION IS NECESSARY IF YOUR LOCAL CODE SPECIFIES. 5 Continue installing self-adhering up the roof as necessary to a point not less than 24" (610 mm) past the interior warm inside wall of the house or above the expected level of ice dams or according to building code requirements. Side laps in overlying courses of self-adhering can be lapped to either the 2" (51 mm) lay line or the 4" (102 mm) lay line. Firmly hand-roll these overlaps to ensure a complete, watertight bond. Next apply a HALF-WIDTH + 1" wide starter strip of Right Start (first lay line past the center of the sheet shows where to cut), and lap it 6" (152 mm) over the selfadhering underlayment. Roof Valleys: Right Start can be laced across roof valleys and up the adjacent roof a minimum of 6" (152 mm) or lapped 6" (152 mm) over a membrane valley liner like Arctic Seal 401. Do not fasten closer than 6" (152 mm) from the valley centerline. Right Start can help waterproof a valley but should not be the sole underlayment. Valley liners of self-adhering membranes or strips of roll roofing should be applied to the roof deck first, whether or not an open metal valley is also constructed. Follow by applying a full-width sheet of Right Start on top, completely overlapping the starter strip. Courses of Right Start to follow are all full-width and weather-lapped 20¾" (527 mm) over the preceding courses, leaving an exposure of " (473 mm).
