Masterpiece: Le Moulin de la Galette Artist: Pierre Auguste Renoir (Oh-gooste, Ruh-nwahr) Concept: Single Portrait Lesson: Impressionism Portrait with Watercolor Pencils and Dabbing with Wet Sponge Objectives: To create a human face Adding details such as hair and eye color and facial expressions Create blotches of color in the background and other details such as a hat or bow, hair blowing in the wind, flowers, insects, sunshine, clouds or rain Vocabulary: Impressionism, Capturing a Moment in Time, Brush Stroke, Color, Light, Brushstrokes, Blurry Details Materials: (one per student unless otherwise specified) 8x10 sheet watercolor paper (bring a few extras for re-dos) pre-cut oval stencils for face outline handout of facial proportions guide watercolor pencils small paint brushes to blend watercolors small plastic dishes for water or have groups of 3-5 share a larger container. They need VERY little water. Paper towels for blotting excess water from brushes and artwork. 9x12 Colored construction paper for mounting ** Helpful Tips ** Have students lightly outline the face and features with a watercolor pencil, not a regular pencil. Mount the artist s blurb on the back of 9 x 12 colored construction paper ahead of time. For skin tone, have kids rub a brown or black water color pencil on a scrap piece of paper. Then use a wet brush to blend the watercolor on the scrap paper and transfer the blended color to the portrait. This results in a much lighter and blended color.

Using watercolor pencil directly on the face usually results in skin tones that are too dark or uneven. If using watercolor pencils, make sure the students do not use too much water when blotting their colored portrait this will cause the paint to smudge and darken. Make sure the blot very lightly with the sponge! Process: 1. Hand out 8x10 watercolor paper, pre-cut oval template, watercolor pencils, photo copy of facial proportions guide. 2. Have students lightly outline the oval shape with a skin tone watercolor pencil. Make sure the oval is centered on their sheet of watercolor paper leaving enough room for the neck and shoulders. 3. Next place the eyes, nose, and mouth on their oval using the facial proportions guide as an example. 4. Make sure facial expression and mood is created in face by adding smile, frown, twinkle in the eyes, etc. Remind them to include everything including hair, ears, glasses, neck and shoulders. 5. Next add accessories such as hair bows, earrings, ball cap, and/or external object flying overhead such as a butterfly, a ball or an airplane. 6. Once their face and accessories are complete, make sure the students fill their page with color and create a background such as a sunny or rainy day. 7. When face and background are done hand out water, small brushes, and clean sponges or paper towels for blotting. Remind them not to use too much water and to do one area of color at a time rinsing and blotting their brush frequently and between each color. 8. Have students gently blot the portrait to absorb any access water using a clean area of paper towel over each color to avoid mixing the colors. 9. Once the project is complete, have the students sign their artwork and encourage them to title their work. For example, A Breezy Day at the Park whatever fits their theme. 10. Set aside to dry overnight and place under books to flatten out before mounting if possible.

Pierre Auguste Renoir ( ) Pierre Auguste Renoir was a French impressionist painter noted for his radiant, intimate paintings, particularly of women. Recognized by critics as one of the greatest and most independent painters of his period, Renoir is noted for the harmony of his lines, the brilliance of his color, and the intimate charm of his wide variety of subjects. Unlike other impressionists he was as much interested in painting the single human figure or family group portraits as he was in landscapes; unlike them, too, he did not subordinate composition and plasticity of form to attempts at rendering the effect of light. Renoir was born in Limoges on February 25, As a child he worked in a porcelain factory in Paris, painting designs on china; at 17 he copied paintings on fans, lamp shades, and blinds. He studied painting formally in at the academy of the Swiss painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre in Paris. Renoir's early work was influenced by two French artists, Claude Monet in his treatment of light and the romantic painter Eugène Delacroix in his treatment of color. Renoir first exhibited his paintings in Paris in 1864, but he did not gain recognition until 1874, at the first exhibition of painters of the new impressionist school. One of the most famous of all impressionist works is Renoir's Le Bal au Moulin de la Galette (1876, Musée du Louvre, Paris), an open-air scene of a café, in which his mastery in figure painting and in representing light is evident. Outstanding examples of his talents as a portraitist are Madame Charpentier and Her Children (1878, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City) and Jeanne Samary. Renoir fully established his reputation with a solo exhibition held at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris in In 1887 he completed a series of studies of a group of female figures known as The Bathers (Philadelphia Museum of Art). These reveal his extraordinary ability to depict the lustrous, pearly color and texture of skin and to impart lyrical feeling and plasticity to a subject; they are unsurpassed in the history of modern painting in their representation of feminine grace. Many of his later paintings also treat the same theme in an increasingly bold rhythmic style. During the last 20 years of his life Renoir was crippled by arthritis; unable to move his hands freely, he continued to paint, however, by using a brush strapped to his arm. Renoir died at Cagnes, a village in the south of France, on December 3, 1919, at the age of 78.

Renoir died at Cagnes, a village in the south of France, on December 3, 1919, at the age of 78. Impressionism was a time period of art that began in France by a group of artists that wanted to break away from the formal academic art style of the Renaissance. The movement s name came from Monet s painting titled, Impression, Sunrise that he painted in An art critic that was at the show, noticed the word impression in the title of Monet s painting and wrote, mockingly, that all the artists on show were impressionists. He meant that their work was sketchy and unfinished. Impressionist s such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot and others took their subjects from the life of their own time which meant painting city scenes and landscapes and people. These artists were tired of painting about history like the Renaissance and wanted to paint what was happening in their life. The Impressionists paintings had bright colors and choppy brushstrokes. Light also played a big part in their paintings and instead of working in their studios, they often painted outdoors trying to capture momentary effects of light. The painters had to work fast, using big brushstrokes and dabs of pure color to build up figures without putting in hard outlines or smoothing down the surface of their artwork. The technique, known as broken brushwork, created a lively atmosphere. The invention of tubes of ready-made paint made it easier for the Impressionists to paint quickly. Sometimes they painted straight from the tubes onto the canvas causing the paint to be very thick and giving the painting lots of texture.

Renoir was know for painting people enjoying themselves. Much of the Impressionists work, like Renoir s, does not show a lot of detail and looking up close it may appear blurry. However, from a distance the Impressionist s broken brushwork reveals images of daily life and landscape that in a profound way captures a moment in time and makes it appear timeless.
