3 Page 1 System Requirements General Overview The System Requirements section provides an overview of the technologies and platforms supported by Enterprise etime v5.0, as well as required IT staff skills needed. The recommendations for client hardware can be used as a guideline for clients to purchase their hardware. However, it is recommended that clients purchase their hardware based on how they plan to use the software. The Technology Survey indicates planned usage of the system, including the number of employees, managers, transactions, labor transfers, schedules, etc. Hardware requirements for the application server and the background processor are based on many variables, including the number of employees and users at a company, as well as a company s business practices. Based on how you plan to use the system, hardware requirements will be provided. Application Server The following information summarizes the minimum hardware and software that the Enterprise etime application server requires. The application server is the intermediary between the browser-based front end and the back-end database. It contains the software that provides the business logic for the Enterprise etime components. The application server is also a Web server that uses the client/server model and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to serve the files that form Web pages to users whose computers contain HTTP clients that forward their requests. Software Requirements The following table lists the software requirements for a Windows application server: Operating system* Microsoft Task Scheduler Network protocol Web server software (HTTP daemon) Minimum Recommendations Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Service Pack 1 or 2 Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 6a or higher Windows 2000, Windows 2003: Task Scheduler is part of the operating system. Windows NT: Task Scheduler is not installed with the operating system and must be installed separately. It is delivered with the editing tools in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0. TCP/IP Microsoft IIS 6.0 for Windows Server 2003 (32-bit), HTTPS or HTTP Microsoft IIS 4.0 for Windows NT, Service Pack 6a or higher, HTTPS or HTTP Microsoft IIS 5.0 for Windows 2000 Server, Service Pack 1 or higher, HTTPS or HTTP JRE support IBM * ADP only supports service packs to the specific release. It does not support subsequent point releases or subsequent full releases by the vendor. For example, Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 6a means that ADP will support Windows NT 4.0 and all service packs made to Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 6a or higher, such as Windows NT or It does not imply that Windows NT 4.1 or any other version of Windows NT is supported.

4 Page 2 Background Processor The Background Processor automatically calculates totals, such as hours worked and pay earned, from the data in the database. The Background Processor runs continuously as a background process and updates totals at specified intervals. For example, assume that the update interval of the Background Processor is 30 seconds. After remaining idle for 30 seconds, the Background Processor recalculates totals for all employees whose totals are not up-to-date. The Background Processor is then idle for 30 more seconds before it calculates totals again. The update interval can be set to as little as 1 second or as long as 99 hours. Software requirements are as follows: Operating System Network protocol Minimum Recommendations Any of the following: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Service Pack 1 or higher Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 6a or higher TCP/IP Enterprise etime Setup One or more PCs contain the Enterprise etime Setup component, which is a Windows application that does not have a browser interface. System administrators use the Enterprise etime Setup component to set up labor levels, pay rules, accruals, and comments for the Enterprise etime system. 5 Page 3 Communication Application Server The communication application server runs Data Collection Manager (DCM). DCM is required if you use timeclocks to input time. Minimum Hardware Requirements The following table lists hardware requirements for the Communication Application Server: CPU Number of CPUs RAM Hard disk capacity Monitor screen settings Network ports Other Minimum Recommendations Intel-based 550 MHz Pentium One 256 MB minimum recommended, but varies depending on the particular environment and usage. If available disk space falls below 75 MB, DCM logs a warning, but continues to operate. If available disk space falls below 50 MB, DCM logs an error and shuts down the core DCM applications through the Sentinel service. 800 x 600 pixels with 256 colors (SVGA) Note: Some screens do not display optimally at this resolution. If your DCM configuration includes Series 4000 devices and communication PCs that are outside a corporate firewall, you must open ports as follows: to support DCM messaging between communication PCs and 80 - to support data collection from Series 4000 devices or communication PCs that are outside your firewall to the communication PC within your firewall. UDP for Series 400 Ethernet support (not supported across a WAN). Java Client The Java Client interface is the full-function Java applet interface to Enterprise etime. The first time that a browser accesses the application server, a JRE plug-in is downloaded to the browser. Java Client configurations vary, depending on the type of user. For planning purposes, consider the following two types of client configuration: Client desktop for employees and managers - This desktop system runs browser-based Enterprise etime employee or supervisory functions. Functions include the Timecard, QuickNavs, and Reports. Client desktop for an IS administrator - This desktop system runs all browser-based Enterprise etime supervisory and configuration functions, as well as the Windows client-based Enterprise etime Setup (see Enterprise etime Setup on page 2).

7 Page 5 Requirements The specifications outlined in the following table assume that Enterprise etime is one of several applications running on the Java client machines used to connect to the Enterprise etime application server. The minimum recommendations listed are needed to ensure a reasonable level of performance and user satisfaction. Although Enterprise etime may technically run on lower specifications than listed in the table, performance may not be acceptable for some users. Note also that the browser window must be maximized and no more than three rows of stacked browser toolbars should be visible in order to make all functions in the applets usable. Non-persistent (session) cookies must be enabled. JavaScript must be enabled. Pop-up blocking software must be configured to enable the Enterprise etime server to show pop-up windows. 56K dial-up or Frame relay 56K (minimum) Fractional T1 or T1-T3 (recommended) * ADP only supports service packs to the specific release. 8 Page 6 Enterprise etime Professional - HTML Client The HTML Client option provides a client interface for employees who do not have the hardware required to run the Java Client option. The HTML Client does not download code to the client machine. 9 Page 7 Microsoft Terminal Services Support With Microsoft Terminal Services running on a Windows 2000-based server, all client application execution, data processing, and data storage occur on the server. When used with Enterprise etime, Terminal Services enable the following: IS staff can remotely access Enterprise etime Setup. Low-end and diskless clients can access the Enterprise etime Web interface. 10 Page 8 Citrix MetaFrame Support Enterprise etime v5.0 supports Citrix MetaFrame to improve client performance for clients who use non-pentium or low-end Pentium client machines. Citrix MetaFrame support also enables diskless clients to access Enterprise etime.
