Q.1) When a last or only free throw is successful, may a time-out be granted to either team? Art A time out is allowed to either team after a successful last or only free throw. Q.2) Does a free throw end when the ball hits the ring? Art A shot for a field goal or a free throw: Begins when the ball leaves the hand(s) of a player in the act of shooting. Ends when the ball: 3. Touches the ring. Q.3) May both the Head Coach and the Assistant Coach give verbal instructions to their players on the floor while play is in progress provided they remain in their team bench area? Art.7.5..As long as only one coach is standing. A coach that is sitting may give verbal instructions. Q.4) Free thrower A1 takes more than 5 seconds to release the ball on his last free throw. Shall a technical foul be assessed to A1 for delay of game? Art This is a violation. Team B s ball at Free Throw Line extended in their backcourt. Q.5) Team A is granted a time-out. Is this considered an interval of play? Art and 8.6.An interval of play is a period of time prior to the game starting and the time in between periods. A time out can only be called during the playing time. Q.6) Does the first period begin when, during the jump ball, the ball is legally tapped by one of the jumpers? Art The first period begins when the ball leaves the hand(s) of the referee on the toss for the jump ball. Q.7) May a basket count if the ball enters the basket after a period has ended? Art If the ball is in flight on a shot for goal and the horn sounds to end a period the basket will count. Q.8) Is the ball live when it is at the disposal of the player making the throw-in? Art The ball becomes live when:... During a throw-in, the ball is at the disposal of the player taking the throw-in. Q.9) A1's throw-in pass is deflected by defender B1 and bounces freely on the floor. Is Team A in control of the ball? Art Team A establishes Team Control when a player receives the ball for a throw-in. Since Team B only touches the ball and not gain control Team A still has Team Control.

Q.10) A1 releases the ball on a try for goal. The 24-second signal sounds after which B1 legally touches the ball which is in its upward flight. The ball then enters the basket. Shall the basket count? Art Once a horn sounds to end a period or for the shot clock no player (either team) on the court may touch the ball. In this instance the ball becomes dead immediately when B1 touches the ball. Basket does not count. Q.11) Must both opponents have a firm grip on the ball, each with both hands, for a held ball to occur? Art A held ball occurs when one or more players from opposing teams have one or both hands firmly on the ball so that neither player can gain control without undue roughness. Q.12) Does an alternating possession throw-in end as soon as the ball is released by the thrower-in? Art The alternating possession throw-in ends when the ball is touched by a player on the playing court. Q.13) While A1 has the ball for an alternating possession throw-in, teammate A2 commits a foul. Shall Team A keep its right to the next alternating possession throw-in? Art A foul by either team during the alternating possession throw-in, does not cause the team entitled to the throw-in to lose that alternating possession. If A2 had committed a violation Team A would lose the AP throw in. Q.14) Is it a violation if the ball accidentally comes in contact with a player's foot? Art For a violation to occur a player would have to deliberately contact the ball with any part of the leg. Q.15) A1 attempts a try from the 3-point area. B1 jumps from the 2-point area and slightly deflects the ball which continues its flight and enters in the basket. Shall only 2 points be credited to Team A? Art and FIBA Interp. 16-1, 2 & 3..A goal now counts the points from where the ball is released no matter if it is touched or not. (New 2014) Q.16) Must the free throw awarded for a technical foul be attempted by a player who was on the floor when the foul was called? Art Penalty The opponents shall be awarded 1 free throw, followed by.. Opponents means that any player from that team can shoot the free throw. Therefore a player can be substituted into the game to shoot the free throw but that player would have to remain in the game until a tick of the clock has gone by. Q.17) A4 is holding the ball and is closely guarded by B1. Must B1 allow sufficient room for A4 to pivot without contact? Art A player with the ball must expect to be guarded from all directions as close as possible short of contact.

Q.18) While A1 is dribbling in the backcourt, A3 is standing in the restricted area under Team B's basket for more than 3 seconds. Is this a violation? Art The 3 second count will start when a team is in control of a live ball in the frontcourt. Q.19) A4 is dribbling in the backcourt. A3 and B3 commit a double foul in Team A's frontcourt. Shall the ensuing Team A throw-in take place at the spot nearest to where the double foul occurred in Team A's frontcourt? Art Penalty - the ball shall be awarded to this team for a throw-in at the place nearest to the infraction. Q.20) Team A is awarded a throw-in in their backcourt with exactly 2:00 minutes displayed on the game clock in the 4 th period. Team A is granted a time-out. After the time-out, shall the Team A throw-in take place at the throw-in line in Team A's frontcourt opposite the table? Art When the game clock shows 2:00 minutes or less in the fourth period and in each extra period, following a time-out taken by the team that is entitled to possession of the ball from its backcourt, the subsequent throw-in shall be administered at the throw-in line opposite the scorer s table in the team s frontcourt. Q.21) A1 and B1 both have a strong grip on the ball. In trying to take sole control of the ball, A1 moves both his feet simultaneously. Is the official correct in calling a jump ball? Art and Casebook 12-2 & 8 In this situation and the play described in Casebook 12-2 the FIBA Interpretation is that the Jump ball would be considered as happening first and a violation would not be called. Q.22) In Team A's backcourt, A1's pass bounces off B1's back and goes out-of-bounds. When play resumes, shall Team A have a new 8-second count to bring the ball to their frontcourt? Art ,.2 &.4.. In this situation the 8 second count would start when the ball touches B1. Team A would only have the time left on the 8 second count at the point when the ball went out of bounds. Let s say it took 2 seconds for the ball to go out of bounds. Therefore Team A would only have 6 seconds to cause the ball to go into its frontcourt. Q.23) B1 commits an unsportsmanlike foul on A1 who is in the act of shooting. The basket is successful. A1 is then assessed a technical foul. After reporting the fouls, the officials cancel the free throws and award Team B a throw-in from behind the endline in their backcourt. Is this correct? Art &.7.. In this situation the penalties for each infraction are the same, Unsportsmanlike foul on a player in the act of shooting and the basket is good 1 shot and possession and Technical foul 1 shot and possession. Penalties cancel and the ball would be put in play on the endline as A1 scored a valid field goal. Q.24) May a non-contact foul be a disqualifying foul? Art A disqualifying foul is any (verbal, gesture or contact) flagrant unsportsmanlike action by a player or team bench personnel.

Q.25) A1 releases a 3-point try for goal. The signal sounds to end the period. The ball hits the ring. B1, in attempting to tap the ball off the ring, taps it into the basket. Shall the basket count for 3 points? Art After a release for a shot for a goal and the horn sounds to end the period no player shall touch the ball if it has a chance to enter the basket. Since B1 is on defence and touches the ball at this time it is basket interference and since the shot was released from the 3 point area it would count as 3 points for Team A. If a Team A player touched the ball in this situation then no points would be awarded. Q.26) Defender B1 enters the lane before A1 releases the ball on a final free throw. A1 then releases the ball, but steps on the free-throw line before the ball hits the ring. The free throw is unsuccessful. The possession arrow favours Team A. Shall Team A be awarded a throw-in? Art and Free throw shooter violation takes precedence and all other lane violations are disregarded. Team B would be awarded the ball at the free throw line extended. Q.27) May an offensive player set a screen behind a stationary opponent as close as possible short of contact? Art An offensive player, when setting a screen behind a player would be outside the field of vison of the defender. If the screen is set outside the field of vision of a stationary opponent, the screener must permit the opponent to take 1 normal step towards the screen without making contact. Q.28) A1 jumps to attempt a 3-point try for goal. A1 releases the ball, returns with both feet on the floor, is immediately bumped by B1 and falls to the floor. The try is unsuccessful. Is the official correct in awarding 3 free throws to A1? Art and Art The act of shooting ends when an airborne shooter returns with both feet touching the floor. The foul by B1 is not considered to be a foul on a player in the act of shooting. Team A would be awarded the ball out of bounds at a spot nearest the foul or if Team A is in the penalty situation A1 would shoot 2 free throws. Q.29) A1's makes a throw-in from the backcourt. A2 who has both feet completely in the frontcourt does not control the ball, but deflects it into Team A's backcourt. A3 is the first player to touch the ball after it has returned to the backcourt. Is this a violation for illegally returning the ball to the backcourt? Art A team is in control of a live ball in their frontcourt if a player of that team is touching his frontcourt with both feet while holding, catching or dribbling the ball in his frontcourt. Since the action by A2 did not establish control in the frontcourt Team A have not illegally returned the ball to the backcourt. Q.30) A1 releases a try for goal with 10 seconds displayed on the shot clock. While the ball is in the air, B4 fouls A4. This is Team B's 3 rd foul in the period. The try is successful. Shall the officials count the basket and award Team A a throw-in with 14 seconds displayed on the shot clock? Art and FIBA Interp. 29/50-28 Whenever there is a defensive foul in the frontcourt with less than 14 seconds on the shot clock and the offense is to receive the ball out of bounds in the front court as a result of the foul the shot clock will be reset to 14.

Q.31) A4 is in the act of shooting when B3 commits an unsportsmanlike foul on A2. A4 s field goal try is successful. The official credits A4 s field goal and awards 2 free throws to A2 plus a Team A throw-in at centre. Is this correct? Art The ball does not become dead due to the foul by B3 as A4 has started the act of shooting. The basket would count. If A2 committed the Unsportsmanlike foul on B3 in this situation then the ball would become dead immediately and the basket would not count. Q.32) A substitution opportunity has ended when A10 runs to the scorer and requests a substitution. The scorer erroneously sounds the horn. The official blows his whistle and interrupts the game. Shall the substitution be granted at this time? FIBA Interp. 18/19-13 Example: Because the request was made too late, the substitution or time-out shall not be granted. The game shall resume immediately. Q.33) A1 has been dribbling in the backcourt for 5 seconds. A1's pass from the backcourt hits B1 who is straddling the mid-court line. The ball bounces back to A1 who catches the ball while still in the backcourt. Shall the official start a new 8-second count? Art The team has caused the ball to go into its frontcourt whenever: The ball touches or is legally touched by a defensive player who has part of his body in contact with his backcourt, This means the rest of his body is in the frontcourt. The ball has attained frontcourt status when it touches B1 and rebounds into backcourt to player A so a new 8 second count would start. This would not be an over and back situation as Team A did not gain control of the ball in the frontcourt (two feet and the ball Art. 30). Q.34) Shall the shot clock be reset when a throw-in directly hits the rim of the opponent's basket? Art and FIBA Interp Example:.. Only a shot at an opponent s basket from a player on the playing court that hits the rim or enters the basket resets the shot clock. Q.35) After taking control of a defensive rebound, B-1 dribbles off his foot and the ball goes out-of-bounds. Shall the shot clock be reset to 24 seconds for the throw-in by Team A in their frontcourt? Art This would be an out of bounds violation on B and a change of possession. Therefore the shot clock would be reset to 24 seconds. Q.36) B1 commits a foul on A1 who has started the act of shooting. A1 loses his balance and takes 3 steps before releasing the ball on the try. The ball then enters the basket. Shall the basket count? FIBA Interp Statement. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting after which he scores while committing a travel violation the basket does not count and free throws shall be awarded. Q.37) A2 accidentally scores in his own basket. Shall the captain of Team B be credited with 2 points?

Art If a player accidentally scores a field goal in his team s basket, the goal counts 2 points and shall be recorded as having been scored by the captain of the opposing team on the playing court. If A2 deliberately scored on his/her own basket then it would be a violation and the basket would not count. Throw-in would be at the free throw line extended in the frontcourt. Q.38) A time out is granted to Team A. As the players are proceeding to their respective bench area, player A1 pushes player B1. Is this a technical foul? Art and Casebook The action by A1 would be considered a Personal foul or if the push was deliberate and/or excessive contact occurs an Unsportsmanlike foul would be called. Q.39) For the no-charge rule to apply, must the defensive player have both feet completely inside the no-charge semi-circle? Art The defensive player must have one or both feet in contact with the no charge semi-circle for the rule to apply. Q.40) The ball is rolling on the ring following a try by A1. B1 jumps and bats the ball away. Is B1's action legal? Art Once the ball has touched the ring when the game clock is running any player on either team may touch the ball if it is on the ring or rebounded above the ring. Q.41) A1 ends a dribble and releases the ball on a try for goal. The ball completely misses the ring and is not touched by anyone before A1 retrieves the ball and starts a dribble. Is the official correct in calling a double dribble violation? Art Player and Team control has ended on the release of the shot for a goal. Since A1 retrieves the ball a new Player and Team control has started and he/she may dribble the ball again. Q.42) The closely guarded rule only applies when a player is holding the ball in his frontcourt. Is this correct? Art The closely guarded rule is in effect everywhere on the playing court. Q.43) A1 scores a basket. A fight erupts and substitutes A10, B10, and B11 leave their respective team bench area. The two fighting players are assessed a double foul and are disqualified. A10, B10, and B11 are also disqualified for leaving the team bench area. Shall play resume with a jump ball? Art and Even though two players leave the Team B bench area there would only be one Bench Technical called on them as per Rule Therefore we would have a double foul for the fight and the penalties would cancel for the Team A and Team B Bench T s. The ball would be given to Team B on their backcourt endline as Team A had scored prior to the fight.

Q.44) On a fast break, A1 ends his dribble at the free throw line, throws the ball against the backboard, continues his movement toward the basket, jumps, catches it again before it is touched by another player and dunks the ball. Is this a legal play? Art A1 ended his first dribble. Throwing the ball against the backboard would be a second dribble. Double Dribble violation when he touches the ball on the rebound from the backboard. Q.45) A1 catches the ball while airborne. A1 lands on his right foot, jumps off that foot, and lands with both feet simultaneously. Must A1 use his right foot as his pivot foot? Art In this situation A1 cannot use either as his pivot foot. If either foot was raised and then touched the floor again, with the player in control of the ball, it would be a travel violation. The player would be allowed to jump off the floor to shoot or pass. Q.46) B1 commits a foul on dribbler A1. A10 substitutes for A1. An official puts the ball at the disposal of A2 for a throw-in. It is then discovered that the foul by B1 was the 5 th foul by Team B in the period. The officials ask that A1 reenter the court to attempt the free throws. Both free throws are successful. Must A1 remain as a player for at least one running phase of the game clock? Art The substitution for A1 was an error. A1 would be considered as never having left the court and can be substituted if the last free throw is successful. Q.47) While on the bench during the 1 st period, substitute A10 impolitely addresses an official. A technical foul is called. In the third period, A10 has substituted and is now a player. He swears at an opponent and is assessed a technical foul. By rule, shall A10 be disqualified? Art and The first Technical Foul would be assigned to the Coach as a Bench Technical and not assigned to player A10. The 2 nd Technical would be assigned to player A10. By rule two player T s are cause for disqualification so A1 would not be disqualified. Q.48) Shall the game clock be stopped when the 24-second signal sounds and a team is in control of the ball? Art Stopping the game clock when: The shot clock signal sounds while a team is in control of the ball. Q.49) A1 is dribbling the ball when B1 taps the ball out of A1's control. The ball is then controlled by A2. Shall the shot clock be reset? Art By tapping the ball B1 does not gain control and therefore there is not a change of possession. The shot clock would continue and not reset. Q.50) During the pre-game warm-up, starter A1 is injured and is unable to start the game. He is substituted for by A10. May Team B also substitute for one of their starters at this time? - Art Team B would only be allowed to substitute the same number of players that are injured on A s Team. In this case Team B would be allowed to substitute 1 player.
