2 Dear Teachers, Paintings and sculptures can illustrate historical events, Biblical stories, legendary myths, or personal memories. Other works of art invite us to create our own story. On this tour, students will discuss narrative in artworks, draw similarities between written stories and visual narratives, and discover the many techniques artists use to create a story. Younger students focus on looking at artwork and developing a narrative while older students discuss story sequencing: beginning, middle, and end. In the studio, younger students will create a collaged accordion book that they can take back to the classroom to write a story inside. Older students experiment with crayons and watercolor to create a three-part story sequence inspired by a well known painting. The What s the Story tour and studio experience connects visual arts with language arts to provide students and teachers a valuable learning experience that extends to the classroom. 4 Main Goal of Tour Students will discuss narrative in works of art and discover how artists use different visual techniques to create a story. Lesson Objectives Established with Bloom s Taxonomy The learner will REMEMBER UNDERSTAND APPLY ANALYZE EVALUATE CREATE Draw on prior knowledge and interest to discuss the term narrative, favorite stories, book illustrations, and similar topics. Analyze artworks from different time periods and discuss how the elements of art, body language, and other visual techniques are used to create a visual story and convey meaning. The learner may also discuss similarities between visual art terms and literary terms such as setting, character, or symbol Use new knowledge to discuss artwork from different time periods while identifying techniques artists use to convey narrative through the use of visual art and literary terms, elements of art vocabulary, and other descriptors. Compare and contrast artworks from different time periods and cultures. Consider the methods artist use to create a story and vocabulary words. Make judgments about selected artworks based on criteria. In the studio, younger students will create an accordion book and decorate the cover with a collage. Older students will create their own three-part story sequence using crayon and watercolor. 4

5 Classroom Preparation Prior to Visit 1. Introduce and discuss new vocabulary with your students. 2. Before reading your weekly story, or any book with illustrations, ask students to thumb through the pages and examine the illustrations. Challenge students to make predictions about what is going to happen in the story. Suggested Questions - What is going on in this picture? Ask students to explain their answer. - What do you see that makes you say that? - What do you think is going to happen next? What do you see that makes you say that? 3. Art Terms: Portrait Landscape a work of art that represents a specific person, a group of people, or an animal; portraits usually show what a person looks like as well as revealing something about the subject s personality. Portraits can be a painting or a sculpture. a painting, photograph, or other work of art which depicts scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. A landscape is a work of art that represents a view of a natural outdoor scene; also consider cityscapes and seascapes Still-life Sculpture Color Line Symbol Texture a picture of inanimate objects. Common still-life subjects include vessels, food, flowers, books, and clothing A three-dimensional work of art that is typically carved, modeled, or cast. When light is reflected off an object, color is what the eye sees. A continuous mark made on a surface. Lines can vary in length, width direction, and curve. Lines can be used alone or combined to create shapes. A form, image, or subject representing a meaning other than the one with which it is usually associated. The surface quality of an object or feel of an image, such as smooth, rough, soft, etc. Texture can be actual or implied by line, shape, or color. Literary Terms: Narrative Myth a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious. A narrative has a clear beginning, middle, and end. A legendary narrative that presents part of the beliefs of a people or explains a practice or natural phenomenon. 6

7 Religious story Legend Character A story relating to religious beliefs. A story that is passed down from the past. A legend is popularly accepted as historical but is not verifiable. a person represented in a drama, story, etc. Also a set of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing. Plot Setting Hero/heroine Allegory Symbol The pattern of events or main story in a narrative or drama, comprising a series of events that are gradually unfolded, sometimes by unexpected means. The surroundings or environment of anything or the scenery and other properties used in a dramatic performance or visual artwork. A person admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great. A hero is also the main character in a book, film, or play, who is admired for their good qualities. When the literal content of a work stands for abstract ideas, suggesting a parallel, deeper, symbolic meaning. A form, image, or subject representing a meaning other than the one with which it is usually associated; something that means more than an object s literal definition. For example, a dog is a symbol of fidelity Curriculum Connections/Post-Visit Activities 7

8 Language Arts Lower level 1. Give students a writing prompt and ask them to write and illustrate a story inside the book they created at the museum. Assign your own grade level expectations and S.P.I. s Upper level 1. Ask students to use the artwork they created at the museum to write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Assign your own grade level expectations and S.P.I. s for writing. 2. Show off your hard work to your principal and parents by displaying this project in your classroom or hallway! Hang student artworks and stories with a description of the project and the G.L.E. s and S.P.I. s. 8
