2 Do wonders for the urban environment Volvo hybrid technology is the optimal way to power buses in urban and suburban areas. This is because the Volvo hybrid recycles the energy created by frequent braking. Instead of the energy being lost as heat in the brakes, it is used to power the bus. The key benefits of this are both environmental and economic. Not only is fuel consumption reduced by up to 30 %, but emissions are reduced by as much as %. On top of that, the noise level is significantly lowered with a near-silent take-off. Choose the Volvo parallel hybrid solution The hybrid solution developed by Volvo is truly revolutionary. It is a parallel hybrid, which means that a diesel engine and an electric motor work in parallel or independently to power the bus. The electric motor is used to start and accelerate the bus up to about 20 km/h, serving both as a motor and a generator. At higher speeds, the diesel engine takes over. Every time the brakes are applied, the retardation energy is used to charge the batteries. The electric motor provides maximum torque directly from start, which results in excellent starting characteristics and driveability. Reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 % The Volvo hybrid system is a real energy saver. In fact, Volvo Buses has been granted government support from the Swedish Energy Authority for its development. The hybrid greatly reduces fuel consumption, and, consequently, overall running costs. This is not only because recycled energy is used to power the bus, the high power output of the electric motor also allows a smaller and more economical diesel engine to be fitted. In addition, auxiliary functions such as the power steering, air compressor, cooling and air conditioning are all powered by electric motors that only operate when needed. Cut emissions by % The Volvo 7700 Hybrid proves that high transport capacity can be combined with low emissions. When the bus pauses at a bus stop or traffic light, the diesel engine switches off automatically and electric power is engaged. The bus then produces no emissions whatsoever. The diesel engine doesn t come back on until the bus has picked up speed again. This naturally means that the Volvo hybrid system reduces emissions dramatically, particularly CO 2 but also NOx and particulate emissions by as much as %. As an extra environ mental benefit, the overall noise is lowered by 4 db(a). Secure high productivity, comfort and safety The Volvo 7700 Hybrid is a true people-mover, featuring the high level of comfort and safety that Volvo buses are renowned for. There is no compromise on capacity compared to conventional buses and it can carry up to 95 passengers. It has a wide centre aisle, an entirely flat floor and wide electrically operated doors, which permits swift and convenient passenger movement. Boarding height is very low thanks to the kneeling function. The body is reinforced at the front and sides, while the frame is robustly dimensioned and made of highstrength steel. All axles feature electronically controlled disc brakes with ABS, which promotes faster braking response and a shorter stopping distance.
