1 PERSONAL SAFETY i-safe Lesson Plan Suggested Grade Level K Goal Learners will develop an understanding of the need to make responsible choices to ensure personal safety when using the Internet. Students will engage in a group discussion moderated by the teacher to (a) provide exposure to vocabulary words related to the Internet, and (b) gain a basic awareness of a comparison of the physical community to the abstract concept of Cyberspace as a community. The focus of the discussion will be directed at reinforcing the concept that it is unsafe to talk to strangers. Students will complete a hands-on activity to reinforce vocabulary and concepts introduced. Note: In the early elementary grades it is suggested that the i-safe lesson on Cyber Community Citizenship be completed before any other i-safe lessons. Materials / Preparation a copy of the i-buddy Stick Puppet activity, and crayons or markers for each student a copy of the activity page craft sticks or straws available to complete the puppets Youth Empowerment This learning unit will incorporate the core lesson activities into a correlated empowerment activity. Learners and instructors will choose a Youth Empowerment activity which best reflects their needs and interests. Assessment (Grades K 2) Assessment should be completed after implementation of the last i-safe lesson. In ilearn downloadable materials and in print versions of the curriculum, assessment instructions and student pages are located at the end of the lesson on personal safety. These materials are also found in the Downloads section of the i-safe K-5 Curriculum CD. LESSON PLAN with EXAMPLE DIALOGUE Introduction If appropriate, review i-buddy s message from prior lesson Do you remember what i-buddy s special message was in his last lesson? I ll help you remember it: i-buddy says, you will make the Internet safe if you get help from an adult. Then it will be fun for everybody. Today we re going to talk about a way that an adult s help can make the Internet safe and fun for everybody. We are going to learn and use some words that some of you may not know, so be sure to let me know if you don t understand a word i-safe Inc. Grade K 1

2 Review discussion First of all, let s review. Who can tell me what the Internet is, and how we can get there? Provide time for student responses. Right, the Internet is the community that you can go to when you use a computer. Another name for the Internet is cyber community [vocabulary]. Activities in the cyber community are a lot like activities in the communities we live in. Present the concept: One of the activities that people do on the Internet is to write and send messages to each other. Question: How many of you have ever received a letter in the mail? Who sent a letter to you? Provide time for students to respond. Did your parents help you write back to them?" Provide time for students to respond. Question: Does anyone know of a way people can send messages to each other on the Internet? Provide time for students to respond. (Gauge this part of the discussion to your students Internet experience level: Briefly discuss that on the Internet, people can send messages through . s are letters that are written on a computer, and sent through the Internet. You read the letter on your computer instead of getting it from the real mailbox. messaging is a great way to communicate with someone you and your parents know. Even if you don t send and receive yet, it s important to know about it. Activity: Take out the i-buddy message and read it to the class. Explain that an message looks like this and can be printed out from the computer onto a piece of paper. Pass the message around for the students to see the page. Optional Classroom computer extension activity Log onto the Internet and bring up an program. Show the students what an message looks like. If possible open an unread message and/or send an to another class or teacher. Question: Think about who you would want to get an message from, and who you would want to send an message to. Who would it be? Is it someone you know already? Have every student respond, and provide appropriate feedback. Question: Can someone tell me what a stranger is? Tell me how you know if someone is a stranger. Provide time for students to respond and provide appropriate feedback. (Include that a stranger may not appear scary.) A stranger is someone that you and your parents don t know. Question: Can a stranger become a friend? Provide time for students to respond. Question: Yes, sometimes a stranger can become a friend after you get to know him or her, but who should decide if you are going to get to know that person? 3 Reinforce: Your parents, or the person who cares for you, must decide who will get to know you. Question: Think about what you know about being safe in your community or neighborhood. Do any of you follow a rule in your community about not talking to strangers? Provide time for students to respond, and prompt discussion on similar rules that the students follow. Present the concept: It s no different on the Internet. Sometimes strangers do not tell the truth on the Internet. They might be trying to trick people into believing them, so it s not a good idea for anyone to send messages back and forth with a stranger. Question: Does anyone know what the FBI is? Provide time for students to respond. FBI stands for Federal Bureau of Investigations. It is a group of people who work hard to solve crimes and even to prevent them. They want to make sure that you stay safe wherever you go. They want to help keep kids safe on the Internet. The FBI came up with some ways to help keep you safe on the Internet. These are rules to help keep you safe. Present the concept: One of the important FBI safety tips is this: people on the Internet may not be who they say they are. It means that they are strangers, so you don t really know who they are. Review Who did we say should be the one to decide whether or not you should talk to someone or write to someone? (Parent or caregiver) If you remember that tip, it will help you stay safe in Cyberspace! When you know the Internet safety tips, you are cyber smart, and Cyber Smart is Cyber Safe. Optional Classroom Computer Extension Activity If you have Internet access in the classroom, and your students are already familiar with the concept of messaging, go over all 5 of the FBI Internet Safety Tips at This webpage is part of the FBI s safety fieldtrip for children in grades K through 5. Review Question: Let s review what i-buddy wants you to remember: i-buddy says you will make the Internet safe if you get help from an adult. Then it will be fun for everybody. Now that you are Cyber Smart, and know a way to be Cyber Safe, help me review what we have learned today. What should you remember about talking to strangers in the real community? (Don t talk to strangers) What is a way to send or get a message on the Internet? ( ) Do you really know someone who sends a message on the Internet, if you have never met them in person? (No) What should you remember about getting or sending messages to strangers on the Internet? (People on the Internet may not be who they say they are. 4 Culminating Activity Option: Play a selection from the songs located in the Downloads section of the K-5 curriculum CD or on the Sing with I-Buddy audio CD. Students color and cut out the i-buddy Stick Puppet. Teacher assists with attaching craft sticks or straws to make a puppet. When the puppets are finished, have the students hold up their puppets and recite: i-buddy says, we will make the Internet safe if we get help from an adult. Then it will be fun for everybody. Empowerment in Action Select one of the following to incorporate Youth Empowerment and Outreach: Have the students create a short puppet show about i-buddy s message and present it to another class. Have the students take their puppets home and ask them to tell their parents about how i-buddy wants them to be safe on the Internet. Have the students make a bulletin board featuring their stick puppets Conclusion Complete the Assessment activity if this is the last i-safe lesson to be implemented. Please submit photographs of students who create exceptional youth empowerment projects, for special recognition from i-safe. Photographs must be accompanied by corresponding personal release forms. 5 ASSESSMENT Materials needed: A copy of the Student Assessment page for each student. Online access to the K-2 assessment, used to summarize input from individual student forms. Directions for Student Assessment Pages: Have each student complete the Student Assessment page (4 questions). Read each item out loud, and provide time for the students to circle their answers before going on to the next. Reinforce that it is okay if they do not understand a question, or are not sure of an answer. 1. Question 1: Have the students look for the picture of the house next to the #1. Read the question and instruct the students to circle YES if they use a computer at home, or NO if they do not have or do not use a computer at home. 2. Question 2: Have the students look for the #2 in the box with the pictures of the girl using a computer. Read the question and instruct the students to circle YES if they go on the Internet, NO if they do not go on the Internet, or I DON T KNOW if they are not sure or do not understand the question. 3. Question 3: Have the students look for the picture of the (just like i-buddy s e- mail from the lesson) next to the #3. Instruct the students to circle YES if they use e- mail, NO if they don t use yet, or I DON T KNOW if they are not sure or do not understand the question. 4. Question 4: Have the students look for the picture of the boy and girl using computers next to the #4. Instruct the students to circle YES if they chat on the Internet, NO if they don t chat, or I DON T KNOW if they are not sure, or do not understand the question. When completed, collect the pages. Ask the students how many have shared what they have learned about Internet safety with their parents (shared their activity booklets, etc.). You will need this information for the online assessment form. Complete the online assessment form Your participation in the assessment process is of vital importance in underscoring the need for Internet safety education, assessing the effectiveness of the program, developing future needs, and providing validation to our funding organizations. Your participation helps to ensure that i-safe can continue to provide the program to all students on a cost free basis. Complete the online assessment form after completion of i-safe program, based upon the answers provided by the students and your experience implementing the curriculum.
