WHAT IS AUSPIG? Auspig is one of the world's most advanced decision support systems for pig producers. It has the potential to tighten up feeding operations, improve productivity of pig resources and increase returns per pig. Some Australian producers have increased their profitability by $100/sow in the first year by using AUSPIG. Can you afford not to use it? AUSPIG integrates the latest R & D from around the world into the following four components (using Windows based software): 1. AUSPIG growth and production simulation model 2. Feedmania optimal-cost diet formulation system 3. Pigmax pig enterprise model 4. Expert Systems to analyse and interpret the model outputs What Does Auspig Do? AUSPIG couples on-farm performance and resources from your piggery with sophisticated computer decision support software. It models your herd's unique performance characteristics so that more profitable pig management strategies can be determined. AUSPIG provides information on: feed ingredients and formulation diets feeding levels, the use if capital labour and other resources weight and quality of carcase to sell modification of climatic and other housing conditions AUSPIG is a valuable management tool for piggery managers because it: predicts your performance of your pigs (AUSPIG) improves feed purchase and diet formulation decisions (Feedmania) identifies opportunities to increase profits through better resource use (Pigmax) provides expert analysis and advice for pig production (Expert Systems) What Do I Need To Use Auspig? Herd performance records AUSPIG requires growth and performance data on a representative group of male and female pigs including age weight and P2 fat measurements from weaning to slaughter (with at least three measurements during this time frame) feeding regimes for pigs - diet ingredients, date introduces, percentage waste and method of feeding buyer information for potential buyers of your pigs
Herd resource records Pigmax requires data on existing and potential resources such as: grower housing/environment conditions piggery throughput/production breeder herd management and performance breeder and piglet feeding and costs morality rates capital costs and depreciation variable cost and overhead costs AUSPIG Reports: The AUSPIG Model displays its complex output in a manner that is easy for the user to read and analyse. A number of standard reports are present in the system which presents the results of the data that is simulated when an AUSPIG analysis is carried out. These standard reports may be printed as is, or they may be exported to an external spreadsheet for further examination and manipulation. An example of one such standard report is found at the end of this article In addition to the comprehensive list of standard reports that the AUSPIG Model contains, you may choose to create and customize your own report that covers variables not usually looked at in standard reports. PIGMAX Reports: The PIGMAX co report tables that can be easily examined and understood. An example can be found at the end of this article Graphing: The AUSPIG Model also contains a powerful graphics package which will allow you to view certain aspects of the reported data in a graphical form. The process of producing graphs based on AUSPIG and PIGMAX reports is straight forward, you need only select the variables which you wish to graph and the system practically does the rest for you. An example of a simple growth curve produced from the AUSPIG model can also be found at the end of the article
AUSPIG Growth Model The AUSPIG growth and production simulation model is the foundation of the whole AUSPIG system. It simulates pig growth and performance by predicting the utilisation of energy and individual amino acids for pigs of any specified strain from birth to maturity. Predicting Pig Performance: The AUSPIG Model takes account of: pig genotype, sex and stage of maturity diet and method of feeding physical and climatic environment It predicts for the conditions of an individual piggery: feed intake changes in body weight Feed conversion efficiency body composition back-fat thickness weight and value of the carcase when sold to different buyers The conditions under which pig growth and performance are to be simulated by the AUSPIG Model are described using the system s user-friendly data entry facilities. It is possible to simulate pigs grown under a wide range of nutritional, housing and climatic conditions. Identifying Problems and Opportunities: In addition to describing pig performance, output from the AUSPIG Model identifies factors which are limiting growth performance, as well as other opportunities for increasing profitability. Among the important potential limitations are: amino acid deficiencies or excesses energy density of diets cold or heat stress stocking density AUSPIG Model output is presented in both tabular and graphical forms, in a way which helps the user to develop strategies for increasing the efficiency and profitability of the pig production system. Tailoring Diet Specifications: The AUSPIG Model is able to predict dietary specifications to support any nominated level of performance in any type of pig grown under the climatic and housing conditions which you describe. These specifications can be transferred automatically to a feed formulation package to create a new diet.
Feedmania The FEEDMANIA optimal-cost diet formulation system is closely integrated with the AUSPIG growth and production simulation model. It imports specifications for diets predicted by the AUSPIG Model and also provides the source of dietary information for the AUSPIG model simulations. Tailored Diet Specifications through link with AUSPIG Model: The AUSPIG Model s ability to tailor dietary specifications is a major advance in pig nutrition. Requirements for amino acids in pigs of a given weight are known to vary by up to 30 percent depending on their sex, strain, and the level of feeding alone. Many other factors which influence nutrient requirements are also considered by AUSPIG. The AUSPIG Model passes to FEEDMANIA specifications for dietary amino acid and energy levels that are tailored to the strain, sex, level of feeding and climatic environment of the pigs to which the diets are to be fed. FEEDMANIA then formulates the most profitable diets for the particular circumstance. True Least-cost Diets: Unlike conventional least-cost diet formulation systems, which are designed minimise costs of a particular weight of feed, FEEDMANIA formulates true least-cost diets by identifying the combination of available ingredients which minimises the cost of a particular quantity of nutrients. Other facilities essential to implement sound nutritional principles, such as the setting of ratios between nutrients, and the grouping of nutrients and ingredients for constraint, are provided in FEEDMANIA S user-friendly manner.
PIGMAX pig enterprise model The capital costs of modern pig production are high and continue to increase. The allocation of capital and other resources, and the design of production and marketing strategies to maximise profitability, have never been more important than they are today. Allocating resources to maximise profits: The AUSPIG system incorporates PIGMAX, a pig enterprise model which employs linear programming to predict management and marketing strategies which maximise the profits from a specified set of resources, given production and marketing conditions and alternatives. The profitmaximising strategy specifies the best weights and market outlets for male and female pigs, the optimum size of breeding herd, whether to purchase or home-grow replacement gilts, and labour requirements. The resources allocated by the optimum strategy are capital, pen space in different classes of accommodation, breeding sows, furrowing pens, dry sow stalls and permanent labour. Evaluating production and marketing strategies: PIGMAX allows you to evaluate in a whole-enterprise context, production and marketing strategies for the grower herd developed with the assistance of the AUSPIG Model. It will help you answer questions such as: What is the best way to utilise pen space freed by increasing growth rates? Is there a more profitable long-term strategy than the practical short-term strategy? Is it more profitable to market female pigs differently to male pigs? What is the most profitable way to invest a further $20,000 in pig production? Links to AUSPIG and Management Recording Systems: Most of the information required by PIGMAX about the growing herd, such as the costs and quantities of feed used, requirements for floor area, and carcase values, may be transferred automatically from AUSPIG Model simulations. All other information, such as breeding herd performance parameters, production costs and mortality rates can be imported through a special facility for the transfer of data from herd management recording systems. Among the systems which support the interface to PIGMAX are PIGMANIA and MIPS Piggery Management System. Improving investment decisions: Through its advanced linear programming algorithm, PIGMAX also provides measures of the stability of the optimum production and marketing plan in the face of changes in costs and prices. PIGMAX also calculates the marginal increases in profit which would result from supplying more of the resources limiting profitability, providing valuable information on which to base investment decisions.
After helping you to design a profit maximising strategy, PIGMAX can help you to evaluate its feasibility. PIGMAX produces a 10-year cash flow budget which takes account of investment of additional capital in establishing the livestock inventory, equity levels in different categories of capital, and of the terms and conditions of loans.
Expert Systems Expert Systems are used to analyse and interpret the model outputs: Today s pig industry professional needs to extract all of the valuable information contained in AUSPIG output. This potentially time-consuming task is greatly simplified by AUSPIG S Expert Systems. The AUSPIG Model and PIGMAX produce very detailed output, ranging in complexity from simple descriptions of pig performance and returns from pigs sold at different weights to different buyers, to assessments of biological efficiency such as the factor limiting feed intake, the order of limitation and adequacy of essential amino acids and the efficiency of feed energy use. Without assistance, even experienced AUSPIG users often miss important clues for improving management practices contained in the more complex output. The Expert Systems apply the rules of expert scientists and pig farm managers. They identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improving the performance and efficiency of the individual animal, and then suggest, in order of likely greatest increase in profit, improved management strategies.
