Junior Customer Insights Badge Activity Plan 1 Badge Purpose; When girls have earned this badge, they ll have a better understanding of their cookie customers. Program Essentials Link: Financial Literacy Fun Patch Link: Grocery Store Tour Activity Plan Length: 1.5 hours Girls Take the Lead: While earning this award, there are many ways for girls to be leaders. These can be done by a small group or by individuals. Badge Buddies: o Before the meeting, talk to girls about the activities. Have buddies decide what they want to try or ask them if they want to try something different. o o Buddies can assist adults with prep needed for activities. During the meeting, they can help lead other girls though the activities. They should make sure everyone has what they need and feels included. Food Friends: o Talk to girls about what the snack will be and how they can help. Customize It: If your group wants to expand work on this badge or simply try different activities, go for it! There are many ways to earn this award, including: completing the activities as listed in the Junior Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting, completing two of these activity plans, attending a council-sponsored event or customizing activities. Pick the one(s) that work best for your group. Girls will know they have earned the award if: They have a better understanding of their customers wants They practice ways to market and sell a product to customer Tips and Tools Check out ways to stay safe using Safety-Wise at GirlScoutsRV.org Ensure that your activities are accessible to everyone. Ask in advance if any special accommodations need to be made. If you have questions regarding specific adaptations, please contact River Valleys at Resources This lesson plan has been adapted from the Junior Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting Customer Insights Badge, which can be used for additional information and activities. 1

Getting Started Optional: Girl Scout Promise and Law printed out on poster board 1. Welcome everyone to the meeting. 2. Recite the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Use repeat-after-me or say it as a group if girls know it by heart. Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 3. Play a game so girls get to know each other better. Use the example below if needed. Pile Up: Girls sit on chairs in a circle. Choose a leader who will have a list of yes or no questions, such as Do you have on brown shoes?, Are you wearing a ring?, Is your favorite color purple? As the questions are asked, those that can answer yes move one chair to the right. Those that answer no don t move. Girls will end up piled-up on chairs. Activity #1: Cookie Snack Chat Badge Connection: Questions link to multiple badge steps. Snack prep as needed. Food items, dependent upon snack choice 1. While enjoying snack, discuss what the girls are most looking forward to this year during cookie sales. Possible discussion questions include: Are you excited for cookie sales this year? What are you most excited for? Do you think you will sell more cookies this year than you did last year? Who will you sell cookies to? Have you sold at a cookie booth before? What did you like or dislike about it? Activity #2; Customer Role-play Badge Connection: Step 5 Listen for clues and ask great questions Time Allotment: 20 minutes Gather materials and supplies. Write down potential customers on notecards. Include: 1. Older person/grandparent 2. Business person 3. Mom/Dad/guardian 2

4. Someone who is allergic to nuts 5. Family member over the phone 6. A brand new customer 7. Someone who doesn t like chocolate Notecards with customer examples 1. Direct girls to get into pairs and give each pair a notecard. 2. Have one girl pretend to be the customer written on the note card and the other girl pretend to be a Girl Scout selling cookies. For example: the notecard reads, Grandparent. The girl with card will play the role of the Grandparent and the other girl will play the role of a Girl Scout trying to sell cookies to her grandparent. 3. Have partners switch roles and then switch note cards with other pairs. 4. After girls have tried a variety of scenarios, ask them to think of other customers they might sell to, including those who may say no. Hearing people say no to cookies is a part of selling. Use each no to learn more about customers. Ask the girls to think about how to handle a situation when a customer says no to buying cookies. What might they say to this customer? Ask girls to think about what they would say to each statement below. They may choose to role-play more with the scenarios below or discuss it openly with the group. My kids aren t at home anymore and they ate the cookies I don t eat cookies because they aren t healthy I really don t like chocolate I already bought a box from someone else I can find cheaper cookies at the grocery store Activity #3: Blinged-Out Booth Sales Badge Connection: Step 3 Find out who buys cookies and why Time Allotment: 25 minutes Gather materials and supplies. Paper Writing utensils Markers Scissors Glue Glitter and other fun, bright decorating materials Magazine ads that show a variety of products 1. Spread magazine ads out for girls to view. 2. Have girls look at the various ads and discuss briefly why they think the ad encourages people to buy the product. Example questions: a. Does it come in a fancy package or wrapping? b. Is it the words or a catchy slogan in the advertisement that caught your eye? c. Does it seem like a good deal? d. Do they support a good cause? 3. Using what the girls determined from the advertisements, have girls begin to think about how they can sell more cookies by decorating a new sign for their cookie booth. Note: If your troop is not participating in a booth sale, have them design their own blinged-out cookie carrier box to tote cookies for their door-to-door sales. 3

Wrapping Up Optional: Make New Friends printed on poster board 1. Instruct girls to get into a Friendship Circle. Have girls stand in a circle and cross their right arms over their left, holding hands with the person on each side of them. 2. Sing Make New Friends. Make New Friends Verse One Verse Two Verse Three Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That's how long, I will be your friend. You have one hand, I have the other. Put them together, We have each other. 3. After the song, ask everyone to be quiet. 4. One of today s Badge Buddies should start the friendship squeeze by gently squeezing her neighbor s hand with her right hand. Then, that girl squeezes with her right hand. One by one, each girl passes the squeeze until it travels around the circle. When the squeeze returns to the Badge Buddy who started, she says Goodbye Sister Girl Scouts and the girls unwrap and face outward instead of inward. 5. Optional: Have girls make a wish after their hand has been squeezed and before they pass the squeeze along. Girls can also put their right foot out into the circle when they receive the friendship squeeze, so that everyone can see it travel along the circle. More to Explore Field Trip Ideas: o Take a trip to your local grocery store. Take note of how goods are displayed to attract shoppers attention. Note any signage or other marketing materials that catch your eye. See what you can learn about setting up your cookie booth to attract future cookie customers attention to increase sales. Speaker Ideas: o Invite older Girl Scouts to the troop meeting to share their cookie sales experiences and ideas. Suggestions Do you have any suggestions to improve this activity plan? Do you have ideas for other possible badgeearning activities? Please Family Follow-Up Use the on the next page as a template to let families know what girls did at the meeting today. Feel free to add additional information, including: When and where you will be meeting next What activities you will do at the next meeting Family help or assistance that is needed Supplies or materials that girls will need to bring to the next meeting Reminders about important dates and upcoming activities 4

Hello Girl Scout Families: We had a wonderful time today learning about our cookie customers so that we can make our cookie business even stronger. We had fun: Learning and understanding what our cookie customers want by listening to what the customer has to say Practicing new ways to market and sell a product so that we can run a successful cookie business Continue the fun at home: Discuss your Girl Scout s plans are for selling cookies. What are her goals? Who does she want to sell to? Continue having your Girl Scout practice selling by role-playing what she would say to different types of customers. Look through the Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting with your Junior to find other activities you can try at home. Thank you for bringing your Junior to Girl Scouts! 5
