1 The following teaching and learning activity illustrates how the relationship between Mathematics and Numeracy content can be used flexibly to meet diverse learning needs. The starting point is the year level of the Mathematics curriculum that aligns with students chronological age. Year 8 Achievement Standard By the end of Year 8, students solve everyday problems involving rates, ratios and percentages. They recognise index laws and apply them to whole numbers. They describe rational and irrational numbers. Students solve problems involving profit and loss. They make connections between expanding and factorising algebraic expressions. Students solve problems relating to the volume of prisms. They make sense of time duration in real applications. They identify conditions for the congruence of triangles and deduce the properties of quadrilaterals. Students model authentic situations with two-way tables and Venn diagrams. They choose appropriate language to describe events and experiments. They explain issues related to the collection of data and the effect of outliers on means and medians in that data. Students use efficient mental and written strategies to carry out the four operations with integers. They simplify a variety of algebraic expressions. They solve linear equations and graph linear relationships on the Cartesian plane. Students convert between units of measurement for area and volume. They perform calculations to determine perimeter and area of parallelograms, rhombuses and kites. They name the features of circles and calculate the areas and circumferences of circles. Students determine complementary events and calculate the sum of probabilities.

2 A Year 8 student uses data on mobile phone plans to make judgements and decisions about the most suitable plan. The student answers questions to: construct, analyse and interpret graphs of linear functions construct, manipulate and solve linear equations use mathematical strategies to calculate call costs, compare payment plans, and inform financial decisions related to mobile phone use. 3 A Year 8 student uses mathematical strategies and online tools to calculate personal use of a mobile phone to inform decisions related to mobile phone plan choice. The student uses mathematical strategies and online tools to compare payment plans. The teacher locates the student s current level in mathematics on the Mathematics F-10 learning sequence and makes adjustments accordingly to the demands of the mathematics task Questions to scaffold the activity: 1. How many phone calls do you make each day? 2. What time of day do you make the most phone calls? 3. Who do you call the most? 4. Do you need to make international calls? 5. Do you need internet access? 6. How many text messages do you send each day? Year 5 Content Descriptions Number and Algebra Money and financial mathematics Create simple financial plans (ACMNA106)

4 A Year 8 student develops their number sense. The student uses number to explore and explain their selection of a mobile phone plan, through a maths story accessed by multi-media. The student chooses a mobile phone plan based on the size of the number ($ value). The teacher locates the student s current level of numeracy on the Numeracy continuum and makes adjustments accordingly to the numeracy demands of the Mathematics task.
