3 Energy Issues and Opportunity FACTS: Increasing dependence in the US on natural gas and renewables for electric power production Industry: 20% of U.S. Energy Use heavily reliant on natural gas now and foreseeable future ISSUES: Natural gas prices have been historically volatile and will likely rise to much higher international prices Natural gas is the primary industrial feedstock for petrochemical production burning natural gas for power and process heat is poor stewardship of this important resource Renewables not suitable for most heavy industrial needs due to variability Renewables unlikely to fill gap left by coal plant retirements OPPORTUNITY: An integrated energy system concept at Piketon centered on a high temperature nuclear energy source provides a leadership position in the future U.S. energy portfolio The time scale to implement Piketon project = time scale of predicted national and industrial need

4 The Piketon Project SOUTHERN OHIO Integrate high temperature nuclear heat with industrial technologies to: Produce electricity Power industrial processes such as carbon conversion (e.g. coal to liquids and biomass) and chemical production Produce hydrogen for transportation fuels, polymers, plastics, fertilizer, hydrogen fuel cell market Utilize residual heat to drive low temperature processes Water purification (e.g. distillation, reverse osmosis) Enzymatic processes (e.g. fermentation, anaerobic digestion)

6 Ohio s Energy Future Projected Economics Economic viability of the Piketon IES concept requires competitive energy and production costs 20 to 80 years in the future Business risk assessment requires weighing estimated energy and product production costs against projected market prices Prediction of US and global energy and product market prices is uncertain Short term variability is highly volatile Long term trends from multiple sources are most instructive A viable energy future requires demonstration of innovative technologies and flexibility in their application to adjust to changes in the future market
