1 TEEN YOGA RETREAT Combining meditation with awareness of the natural world, this retreat offers teens a memorable experience. Retreats allow us to drop into our minds without the distractions of everyday life. In the serenity of nature, spending time in the wilderness naturally deepens a sense of interconnectedness. This includes meditation, mindful walking, hiking and other contemplation practices. The beauty of practicing mindfulness in an urban setting is that it allows us to return to our natural state of mind a mind uncluttered by busyness and technology a mind free to take in the vastness of the earth and the spaciousness of our consciousness. Mindfulness is embedded in all the daily activities, which include sitting and walking meditations. Using the skills of mindfulness, teens can begin to calm their mind and explore their inner self. The benefits of mindfulness practice include increased concentration, memory, empathy, emotional intelligence and self-esteem. An important element is helping students recognize our connection with the earth. The retreats are held in natural settings and activities include taking silent or guided walks and eating wholesome foods. As teens quiet their minds, many are able to connect with the natural world in an entirely new way. A variety of mindful activities may be offered which may include art, music, crafting, preparing food and discussion on yoga and mindfulness-related topics. Through awareness and concentration practices, teens learn how to settle a busy mind, skillfully handle emotions and thoughts, direct and sustain attention, cultivate compassion, and truly listen and communicate to one another. Guided mindfulness practices, discussions, and fun activities provide opportunities for exploration, connection, growth and inspiration. The retreat allows participants to get to know themselves on a deeper level, connect with the earth and each other.

3 How Does a Retreat Work? Time in retreat allows us to step out of the complexity of our life, to listen deeply to our body, heart and mind. Meditation retreats offer practical instruction and group support for discovering inner understanding and freedom. Careful guidance and training is offered in meditation. A retreat provides an opportunity and a caring container for undertaking meditation and yoga practice, similar to an immersion course in a language. The central practice on retreats is mindfulness, which enables us to see the ways we create difficulties in our lives and to discover a freedom of heart in the midst of all things. The mindfulness practice is often accompanied and complemented by compassion and loving kindness within themselves, each other and the earth. Detailed instruction, Dharma talks and guidance are provided during the retreat. There will be moments of silence for the practice. In such a mindful environment, awareness sharpens, the body quiets, the mind clears, and space opens for insight and understanding to develop. With no diversions there is nothing to distract us. Since there is no place to hide from ourselves, there is a good possibility that we will know ourselves better after a retreat than we did before. Self-knowledge and understanding grow as we see that we can live each moment either with inattention, fear and judgment, or with clarity, kindness and wakefulness. By cultivating the power of awareness, clarity and kindness, we discover our path to liberation, inner freedom and a peaceful heart. Retreat Schedule 1:30 Group gathering yoga practice and mini meditation at the Yoga Loft 2:00 Mindful meal preparation 2:30 Travel to the Birken / snack 3:30 Explore the Birken walking meditation/ Mindfulness arts and crafts 4:15 Meet Ajahn 5:00 Dharma talk / Tea time 6:15 Travel back to the Yoga Loft / snack * estimated arrival 7:00pm The whole retreat is a succession of mindfulness training, breathing practices, deep awareness of the body and environment, meditations on the nature of feelings, and awareness of mind and the laws that govern it.
4 Sitting Meditation: Sitting meditation is a beautiful practice, at the heart of silent retreats. In sitting practice silence and stillness develop, concentration deepens, and awareness expands. The training of the heart brings kindness and compassion for all that arises. Beginning meditators are encouraged to use the breath as a focus for mindfulness. After an inner calm and steadiness are established through breathing, the meditation is systematically opened to include mindfulness of all experiences, of body sensations and emotions, of thoughts and the nature of mind itself. Walking Meditation: Walking gracefully with awareness is one of the great meditative practices. On retreat, periods of walking meditation alternate with periods of sitting meditation. Just as in sitting meditation, where attention is brought to the rhythmic pattern of breathing, in walking meditation, mindfulness is cultivated by resting the attention on sensations of the body during movement. In walking meditation we become aware in the midst of activity. Eating Meditation: An awareness of food, and the mindful understanding of the entire process of nourishment. Students are encouraged to bring the same calm, focused attention to eating as is brought to sitting and walking. Mindful eating is a wonderful context for the arising of insights. The simple, mindful eating of an apple connects us to the orchard far away from our dining table, to the sun and rain and earth that nurture the tree, to the grower, the picker, the trucker, the grocer, to the truth of the interconnectedness of all existence. On retreat, fresh healthy vegetarian food is prepared together. Students assist in preparation and clean up. Mindful Activities: A variety of activities may be offered which may include music, arts and crafts; opportunities to get into a flow state and creative expression. Dharma Talks: Dharma talks are the vocal heart of a retreat. The teacher will provide a lecture on mindfulness related topics, offering ways to apply them to our own experience. The Dharma talks provide principles and practices for students to use in ways that bring benefit to everyday life.
5 The teacher will facilitate a discussion to answer questions, discuss problems, provide guidance, and explain meditation practices more fully. Students are also welcome to talk with teachers at any time during a retreat. Teacher support facilitates a deepening of the student's meditation practice and encourages further development of the student's understanding. Karma Work Meditation: Karma work meditation is an important take-home component of the retreat. The volunteer work is done with intention, using one's whole body, mind and heart. Karma work supports community. Through it we help each other. We learn how to bring wakefulness, concentration and drive to activities of life. Students will come up with a volunteer assignment they will carry out as karma work during the week following the retreat. The completion of the task is understood to be part of the continuous cultivation of mindfulness. Leaving the Retreat: Most participants find retreats deeply rejuvenating and healing. The stillness and simplicity of retreat brings a wonderful and unique possibility for renewal. At the retreat's end, talks and instructions are given for ways to carry the practices home into daily life mindfulness, compassion, and loving kindness to ourselves, each other, and our world!
