5 So, how do we teach Maths? Learning Ladders Each class teacher tracks your child s progress and teaches accordingly. Their learning is scaffolded through the use of a learning ladder. The children progress up the ladder as they are confident with their learning and ready to move onto the next step.
6 The children know how to use the learning ladder and this is helping them to be more independent and take ownership of their own learning. You can see their learning ladders in their books. 07/09/15 To show what I know. Step 4 Step 3 Recognise place value of each digit in a two digit number. Read and write numbers from in words. Step 2 Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 Step 1 Write my numbers correctly from 1 to 30. In English we have a similar approach where children have expected steps to complete, with a challenge to aim for.
7 Assessment The Government expect children to take statutory assessments in both Years 1 and 2. SATs will be administered in May where the children are assessed in Reading, Writing including Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) and Maths. The phonics assessment for children in Year 1 will take place the week commencing 12 th June to assess their phonic knowledge. Any children in Year 2 now, who did not pass last year, will be retaking at the same time.
8 Phonics Assessment Children are given 40 words to decode which consist of both real and nonsense words. The pass threshold is 32 out of 40 and if the children do not meet this criteria they will need to retake the assessment in Year 2. We will be holding an information evening on Wednesday 25 th January at 6.30pm to give you more information on both the phonics test and the SATs tests.
9 Year 2 SATs Tests As you are aware expectations have been significantly increased from previous years. It is our aim to encourage and support the children in achieving these very difficult new tests. We will endeavour to make the experience as stress free as possible. Please note for the Maths paper children will no longer have access to practical resources such as cubes and number lines to support them with their calculations. We teach the children to use jottings to help them cope in this test situation.
10 Expectations As the SATs tests were first administered last year we now have a greater understanding of what to expect. For your information here is a brief example of the kinds of papers the children will be sitting
11 Year 2 Reading Test Paper 1 This is paper 1 where the children read a small amount of text and answer the questions below. Paper 2 consists of a higher level reading booklet with a separate answer sheet.
12 Year 2 Reading Test Paper 2 This is paper 2 where the children have a separate booklet from which to find the answers in. For your child to reach the expected level it is necessary for them to be able to access both Paper 1 and Paper 2.

16 How we assess Grade What this means Significance Expected time of B Beginning A child is just starting to grasp the concepts of that year s curriculum B+ Beginning plus D Developing A child s understanding is above the basic level for that year achievement Terms 1 & 2 Terms 3 & 4 D+ Developing plus S Secure A child has attained the national expectations for that year. Terms 5 & 6 S+ Secure plus (Greater Depth) A child is consistently achieving above the expectations for the year. Only a small number of pupils will attain this assessment
17 Supporting your child at home Reading Encouraging your child to read every night will significantly help your child. You have been given a reading booklet for you to sign to show when your child reads to you at home. Please can you write in your child s reading record book when you hear your child read.
18 If your child reads every day at home for two terms, they are rewarded with a certificate.
19 Home learning expectations Year 1 Read everyday with your child. Log on to Mathletics and complete the tasks set. Home Learning task

21 Home learning expectations Year 2 Read everyday with your child. Work through Maths challenges. These are to inform you what the children have been learning in Maths in school for that week. It is there for you to support your children as you wish. (These will be in a purple folder sent home every Friday) In January regular home learning is sent home to support your child through reading comprehension in preparation for the Year 2 SATs.
22 Expectations of learning In Lower School we have high expectations of our children. We encourage them to be as independent as possible by giving them the skills they need as they move through the school. Presentation is important but so is having a go. We would rather children sounded out their words rather than spelling accurately to give them the confidence to write. However there is an expectation that by the end of Key Stage 1 all children should be able to spell the 100 high frequency words (HFW) and common exception words. These will be in your child s book bag tonight.

29 Marking for improvement In Lower School we talk to our children a lot about how they can improve. Sometimes the marking asks them to check what they have done and make some changes. The children are given time to respond to any corrections or mark for improvement.
30 Sports Coach We are very fortunate to have Josh Neaves, our assistant sports coach through Gillingham Football Club who will be working with Mr Ware to support our children in PE. We will continue to have Karate lessons with Mr Homewood and Dance with Miss Rosita throughout the year.
31 Behaviour
32 Rewards Children will be rewarded in class through Dojo points. A letter has already gone home with a password for you to log in and check how well your child is doing.
33 Attendance It is essential that your child comes to school every day! The curriculum builds on previous learning therefore any missed days will impact on their learning. Obviously illness cannot be avoided but it is essential that your child returns as quickly as possible. We reward children with 100% attendance. The class with the best attendance will be awarded attendance ted to look after for the week.
34 E-Safety Your child will be watching an e-safety video in school and discussions will take place around keeping safe when using the internet. Please see our website for further information.
35 For your information Letters and information will be sent home via . Please let the school know your current address if you haven t done so already! Drop in sessions are available for you to attend on a Thursday at 8.30a.m and 2.30p.m should you wish to speak with Mrs Ashley- Jones or Mrs Cunningham. This is a time for you to talk over anything that may be concerning you.
36 Parent help If you are able to offer some of your time to help to hear readers or help with craft activities please see your child s class teacher. You will need to see the office to arrange for the necessary checks to be carried out before coming into class.
