2 ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Search for Dean of Faculty The mission of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is to provide our students with the world s best undergraduate science, engineering and mathematics education in an environment of individual attention and support. Rose-Hulman is seeking a Dean of Faculty who will embrace and champion the Institute s core strengths and legacy and who has the vision and leadership capacity to position Rose- Hulman to expand its reach and brand, pioneering the future of STEM education nationally and internationally. The Dean of Faculty will assume office in summer 2017, joining the leadership team of Vice President of Academic Affairs Anne Houtman, who joined Rose-Hulman in July TERRE HAUTE Rose-Hulman is located in Terre Haute, Indiana. Early French fur traders gave the city the name Terre Haute, French for high ground, referring to the way the land overlooks the Wabash River, an early- American lifeline of the Midwest. Referred to as the Crossroads of America, the city is the selfproclaimed capital of the Wabash Valley. Located in southwestern Indiana, the city has a total population of approximately 60,000 and is within a one-hour drive from Indianapolis, and approximately a three-hour drive from other large Midwestern cities including Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. Numerous higher education institutions are located in Terre Haute Rose-Hulman, Indiana State University, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and Ivy Tech Community College. Terre Haute was named Community of the Year in 2010 by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. The city has two television stations, a symphony, several parks, a tight-knit art scene, and many concerts and festivals. The Swope Art Museum and the new Children s Museum are both located downtown. Historic parks such as Deming Park and Hawthorn Park are nearby. In addition to the recent significant revitalization of the downtown and surrounding areas, the diversity of the local economy, and presence of higher education, Terre Haute continues to be a major regional center for health care, retail shopping, recreation, entertainment, and the arts. It offers a low cost of living and strong public and private schools. Rose-Hulman is a highly regarded contributor to the area s level of employment. ABOUT ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Founded in 1874, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) is located on a 200-acre campus in Terre Haute, Indiana. RHIT, or Rose, as it is fondly referred to, is consistently ranked #1 among institutions whose highest degree in engineering is the master s degree. The Institute currently enrolls 2100 undergraduates and 100 graduate students. Its 191

3 faculty members teach and pursue scholarship in 11 departments Biology and Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Software Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics and Optical Engineering. Additionally, there are Army and Air Force ROTC programs. The Institute offers 21 ABET accredited undergraduate programs and master s-level graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Optical Engineering. Rose-Hulman is a dynamic institution with a campus consensus for its mission of educating students in the STEM fields with a foundation in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The high quality of the institution is documented by several external national rankings in publications such as U.S. News and World Report, which ranked Rose #1 for 18 years in a row among engineering colleges whose highest degree is a master s degree; and Princeton Review, which ranked it #5 for career placement, #7 for Best Science Facilities, and #8 for Colleges that Pay You Back. The Brookings Institute ranked Rose #4 for Value Added to Graduates Careers and PayScale Report ranked it #10 for Alumni Early Career Salaries. In addition, several Rose faculty members have been listed in the Princeton Review s Best Professors Book. Faculty profile Nearly all 98% of Rose-Hulman s faculty members have PhD degrees. Every effort is made to recruit and encourage professors who believe that teaching is their primary responsibility. Rose-Hulman professors maintain their professional competence through a broad range of activities such as continuing education, consulting, research, and writing. However, the faculty and administration are adamant that a "publish or perish" atmosphere does not and will not exist at RHIT. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is concerned with the student as an individual and is fiercely dedicated to excellence in the character and performance of individual students, staff, and faculty alike. 4 LEADERSHIP AGENDA: IMPLEMENTING THE ACADEMIC MASTER PLAN One of the major responsibilities of the Dean of Faculty will be to assist with the implementation of the Academic Master Plan, which seeks to operationalize the Institute Vision. The Academic Master Plan reflects the leadership agenda for RHIT, and will be particularly significant for the next Dean of Faculty. Work on the Academic Master Plan began in the fall of 2016, shortly after the arrival of Vice President Houtman. This initiative prompted inclusive discussions of staff and faculty across the Institute. From these discussions, common themes emerged relating to the enactment of Rose-Hulman s guiding statements ( Mission: The mission of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is to provide our students with the world's best undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics education in an environment of individual attention and support. Vision: Rose-Hulman graduates will be inspired and prepared for lives of purpose and success, defining and solving the problems of a complex global society. Rose- Hulman will be a lifelong partner with our graduates and a recognized global leader in science, engineering, and mathematics education. Shared Values: At Rose- Hulman, we share a unified sense of mission and vision. We value a student-focused learning environment in which each person can live, learn, and flourish. We value community, integrity, and excellence. We are committed to enhancing knowledge and working together to instill the necessary skills for our community members to be lifelong learners. We value diversity of culture and experiences so that our community members can think and act broadly, creatively, and inclusively about the defining challenges facing humanity. The common themes that emerged from the cross-institute discussions provide both structure and flexibility; structure to guide decision-making, and flexibility to allow responsiveness. The common themes represent four core principles:

5 We will promote the individual success of students, staff, and faculty. We will operate with curricular, operational, and physical flexibility. We will foster connections and community within and beyond our doors. We will respond to issues and opportunities facing the nation and world. These four principles echo the original elements of the Strategic Plan adopted in 2013, and interact to frame future approaches in such a way as to keep RHIT as a national leader in undergraduate education and more importantly, an institution true to its mission and vision. Together, these four principles and their actionable elements will help students, staff, and faculty do their important work today and enable them to do the important work they will face in their futures. THE DEAN OF FACULTY The Dean of Faculty reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and meets regularly with the Academic Affairs Leadership Council, which includes the Dean of Cross-Cutting Programs, the associate deans and academic directors, and the registrar. The primary responsibility of the Dean of Faculty, assisted by the department heads, is the smooth and efficient operation of the academic departments and associated faculty and staff and the implementation of the newly approved Academic Master Plan. The Dean of Faculty is responsible for building and maintaining the quality of the academic departments, constructing and administering their budgets, overseeing the recruitment and evaluation of faculty, encouraging and mentoring the faculty, and working effectively with the rest of the administrative team. Working with this talented team and with institutional colleagues, the Dean will:

6 Help launch the newly created Academic Master Plan, ensuring its alignment with the Institute s mission, vision, shared values, and strategic plan; Develop and/or facilitate structures, policies, and operational practices that enable faculty to innovate and collaborate more effectively internally and with external academic institutions, corporate partners, and other constituents; Drive continuous improvement of Institute teaching and learning activities and practices that will position the Institute to be at the forefront of STEM education; Provide leadership that promotes shared governance and inclusive, transparent decisionmaking. Qualifications: Education and Experience A doctorate and a record of distinguished teaching, professional development, and service qualifying for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the Institute s academic departments; Demonstrated experience or collaboration with engineering programs, as well as the ability to articulate a vision for engineering, math, and science education; A history of increasingly responsible academic administrative experience in higher education; Demonstrated managerial ability, including experience in data-driven planning, faculty development, budget creation and management, and personnel; Demonstrated experience in academic program assessment, managing accreditation processes, and the development and implementation of continuous improvement strategies.

7 Additionally, the ideal candidate will have: Evidence of extensive, positive interactions and collaborations with students; Experience in group dynamics and an ability to communicate effectively with individuals from all backgrounds; An open, collaborative, flexible leadership style; The ability to promote, manage, and adapt to change within a highly creative and dynamic community of scholars; Strong commitment to building an educational and institutional environment that is truly inclusive and treats all students, staff, and faculty with dignity and civility.
