helping make our community a great place to grow up and grow older 2012 ANNUAL REPORT

2 message from the executive director a message to our TABLE OF CONTENTS President s Message... 4 Staff... 5 Board of Directors... 5 Highlights/Milestones... 6 Our Donors... 8 Statement of Activities Our Volunteers My annual task of summarizing and reflecting on the events of this past year has taken a bit longer than usual this year. Besides serving a record number of people, expanding programs and services, and applying for and being selected to receive a large grant from the MN Department Human Services to increase our geographic reach; we ve been very busy managing a Capital Campaign. Rather than hiring outside consultants to direct the Campaign, we decided that the best people to tell the VINE story are those of us who live it each day. As you review this year s highlights and our expanded list of donors, you ll see that we are well on our way to funding an appropriate, and much needed, facility from which to carry out our mission. Mankato s first Adult Community Center will be a one-stop shop for aging adults to improve or maintain their physical health, socialize with peers, volunteer to help others, and access needed services. Once upgrades are made to the Nichols Building, the re-purposed downtown landmark will be a wonderful tool to help VINE grow and continue to address community needs for decades to come. The work coordinated and done by VINE is unique and is not offered to this extent anywhere else in the State of Minnesota. VINE will be critical to the community in the years to come. The Silver Tsunami or Age Wave is coming, where one in four people will be over the age of 65 by The need for services will only expand which is why centralizing all programs and operations into the Nichols Building is essential. It s not possible to put a price tag on the value of these services; but we know that through the efforts of VINE s caring volunteers, the lives of our friends and neighbors are made a whole lot easier. As this chapter of VINE s story is being written, I thank each person who has shared their time, financial resources and/or allowed us the privilege of being of service to you. By working together, we are making our community a great place to grow up and to grow older. All the best, Pam Determan, VINE Executive Director

4 president s message a message from our board I was first introduced to VINE through a volunteer opportunity with which I was involved. After a day spent traveling around town washing windows for elderly folks, I remember thinking, how could I have not known that this wonderful group existed, and how can I help some more? It has been my distinct pleasure to continue on with VINE, both as a volunteer and a board member. I know now, more than ever, what a difference VINE makes in this community and how blessed we are to have it. I am so proud of the good work that gets done at VINE, and I am thankful for having had the privilege to serve as the Board President. The development of the Nichols Building to meet the expanding needs of our community has been an extremely energetic and exciting time for VINE. This new location will ensure that VINE can continue to meet the needs of our community as the senior population continues to grow. Expanded space will help VINE continue to fulfill our mission and promote quality of life and a culture of caring. We are ever grateful for your support, whether by volunteerism or financial support, as our organization grows to meet community needs. Nonetheless, as significant as the Nichols Building has been and will be for VINE, staff and supporters never lose sight of the other good work that must get done each day for those in need. Because of their work and your support the future looks very bright for VINE! Jill Baker, VINE Board President

6 highlights & milestones highlights and Summit Center guests enjoyed a beautiful day at the lake home of Mark and Jennifer Frost. JULY VINE and Community Education coordinated 19 local and out of town trips. A total of 1,021 people participated. Volunteers from Abdo, Eick and Meyers re-built a wheelchair ramp for a young man as part of the United Way Day of Action. AUGUST The VINE Home Thrift Store completed its second year of operation at 77 Star Street in the hilltop commercial district in Mankato. Store hours were expanded to seven days a week in January and delivery was enhanced with the addition of a new truck. Rake the Town, VINE s 15th Annual Day of Service, continues to make an impact on the independence of older Blue Earth and Nicollet County homeowners. On October 30, over 800 volunteers helped 256 older homeowners with their fall yard work. Rakers enjoyed a chili luncheon, compliments of Taco Johns. OCTOBER NOVEMBER people packed Hosanna Lutheran Church to enjoy the antics of the Looney Lutherans and support VINE s Capital Campaign. We are so proud to be associated with the AARP Tax-Aide Program. During the 2012 tax season, 27 highly trained and dedicated VINE volunteers prepared tax-returns and rent credit applications for 2100 low to moderate income community members. We look forward to having additional space in the repurposed Nichols Building so that even more people can benefit from their service in years to come. FEBRUARY APRIL A second successful fundraiser for our Capital Campaign was held at Crossview Covenant Church. Sister, (formerly the Norvold Sisters from Hanska) charmed the group with their singing and storytelling.

highlights & milestones 7 VINE s website was redesigned and launched. Visitors can now access information about VINE s services, capital campaign and thrift store at one site. It is now convenient for people to make electronic contributions and the calendar feature makes it easy to check on daily activities at the Summit Center. MAY Plans were set in place for a management transition of the Hot Meals on Wheels Program to VINE. The service was developed by a committed group of church volunteers in 1970 and was based out of Centenary United Methodist Church until At that time, the Hot Meals on Wheels Board of Directors requested VINE s help since many of their volunteers were aging and Centenary no longer had the secretarial staff available to handle the daily phone calls. Hot Meals will continue to operate under VINE s leadership and without government support, thanks to J.D. Truffles Catering and dedicated VINE volunteers. JUNE The MN Department of Human Services announced that VINE was awarded a $254,000 three-year grant to implement the Home Safe and Sound Program. With this funding, VINE s chore and caregiver support services will expand to a 50-mile radius of Mankato and a home modification service will be added. milestones e We said goodbye and grieved the loss of two remarkable VINE cheerleaders. Kiyo Suyematsu and Evie Casey were instrumental in VINE s development and growth throughout the years. They lived out their faith through service to others and have now joined the celestial community of VINE saints. e The Capital Campaign was a major focus for VINE s board, staff and volunteers this year. Grant writing, community presentations, Kiyo Evie donor visits, and special events kept everyone very busy. By June 30, community members had committed 1.7 million dollars and the project and plans were set in motion to purchase the Nichols Building from Blue Earth County for a dollar later in the summer. e 225 first time care receivers were registered. VINE s staff and volunteers contributed a record number of hours helping make our community a great place to grow up and grow older. e Community members made 26,438 visits to the Summit Center. This is a 9.3% increase from the previous year and the busiest year ever.
