1 The Grade Centre is an area of the elearning Portal for managing assessments. Grades and feedback can be entered and released to students. It is also a place where electronic assessment submissions (with the exception of Turnitin submissions) are stored. This guide describes how to: Access and navigate the Grade Centre Hide and unhide columns Freeze and unfreeze columns Detailed Instructions 1. From the Home tab, click on the link to the required course in the Course List box. 2. Ensure Edit Mode is switched to ON (top right of screen). When edit mode is switched off you will only see the student view of the course and you will not see all of the Control Panel features. 3. From the Control Panel, click the arrow to the left of Grade Centre to open the Grade Centre submenu. 4. From the sub-menu, click on Full Grade Centre. 5. The Grade Centre grid will appear in the centre of the page (see over). Each student has a unique row in the grid and each Grade Centre item (ie assignment, test, survey etc) has its own column. NOTE: Make sure that Edit Mode is On (top right corner of page) if you wish to make changes to the Grade Centre. Copyright 2011 Northumbria University. Page 1

2 Click on any column heading to sort the Grade Center by the data in that column. The default sort order is alphabetically by Last Name. You may need to scroll to the right to see more columns. NOTE: When sorting columns, a second click on a column heading reverses the sort order. 6. You can click on the Icon Legend button to show an explanation of any symbols shown in the Grade Centre. 3 The Grade Centre can be organised in a number of ways. You can hide, freeze and move columns, as well as change column categories and grading periods: HIDE COLUMNS 1. Any column (with the exception of the Last Name column), can be hidden by clicking on the Modify button (drop down arrow) in the column header, and selecting the Hide Column option. UNHIDE COLUMNS 2. Place your mouse over the Manage button, and select Column Organization from the menu. 3. The Column Organization page opens. Place a tick in the box next to the Name of the column you wish to unhide. 4. Place your mouse over the ShowHide button, select Show Selected Columns and click Submit. 4 FREEZE/UNFREEZE COLUMNS The Column Organisation page (Step 2 above) consists of two or more sections. Shown in All Grade Centre Views (shows columns which contain personal information about the students). These columns appear by default. Not in a Marking Period view (shows assessment related columns). NOTE: If a Marking Period has been set (see separate guide) you will see the name of the Marking Period instead. Shown in Selected Views Only (showing assessment related columns). This sections only appears if you have created a Marking Period, and shows those columns which are not included in the Marking Period. Columns which appear above the grey bar on the Column Organisation page are frozen, which means that they remain in position on the left side of the Grade Centre while the rest of the columns can be scrolled through. Additional columns may be frozen/unfrozen as required. 1. To freeze adjacent columns in the Shown in All Grade Centre Views section: From the Column Organisation page (steps 1-2 above) position your mouse over the cross-hairs to the left of the grey bar and drag the bar to a position below the columns you wish to remain frozen. To freeze all columns above Last Access, drag and drop the grey bar as shown To freeze the Total column, drag and drop above the grey bar. Copyright 2011 Northumbria University. Page 4

5 2. To freeze columns which do not appear in the Shown in All Grade Centre Views section of the Column Organization page:- Drag and drop the column to a position above the grey bar. 3.
