Name Meet Martin Luther King, Jr. by Erin Horner

Answer the following questions BEFORE you read this book. It is okay if you do not know as much as you thought. Do the best you can! 1.Who was Martin Luther King, Jr.? Why do we celebrate him each January? He was like many young boys. He liked to play sports. He also liked to ride his bike and sing. But this young man was destined to do much more than shoot hoops with his friends. This young man would help to change the nation. This young man was Martin Luther King, Jr. Draw a picture of Martin doing something that he enjoyed as a child. 2.Which do you think is more important: the way someone looks or the way someone acts? Explain your answer. 3.Do you think that people with dark skin should be treated differently from people with light skin? Why or why not? 1 2 Meet Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, His father was a pastor. His mother was a teacher. Martin and his family were black. Many years ago people with brown skin like the Kings used to be bought and sold as slaves. Thankfully, that was no longer allowed. Sadly, many people with dark skin still did not have the same rights as many other people living in the U.S.A. Big "White Only" signs kept black people out of many places. They could not eat at certain diners. They could not go to certain schools. They were not even allowed to drink at certain water fountains! Martin did not think this was fair. 3 4 Meet Martin Luther King, Jr.

After high school, Martin went to college. During college he decided to become a pastor. Later he met a sweet woman. Her name was Coretta. The two fell in love. Soon they were married. Martin loved to learn. He learned to read when he was very young. He read many books about famous black leaders. When Martin entered school he was a great student. He even finished high school two years early. Martin was a good pastor. He cared about the people in his church. He wanted to help them have a better life. He wanted them to have the same rights that white people had. 5 6 Meet Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin was a very good speaker. When he spoke, people listened! Martin thought that all people should be treated fairly. Lots of people agreed with him. They wanted everyone to have equal rights. Martin began planning rallies and protests. Many people would gather during these events. They would peacefully object to unfair laws. In the summer of 1963, a huge rally was held in Washington, D.C. A massive crowd gathered. Black and white people came to take a stand for freedom. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to the crowd. He gave one of his most famous speeches. He spoke of having a dream. His dream was that people everywhere could live and work together, no matter what they looked like. He wanted people to care about their neighbors' hearts, not the color of their skin. The very next year, Dr. King was given a huge honor. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It is one of the greatest honors that any man or woman can ever win. People realized that Dr. King was helping to change the nation. He was helping to bring peace. 7 8 Meet Martin Luther King, Jr.

Draw a picture of Dr. King receiving his award. It took some time, but Martin's dream came true. With the help of other people and leaders, laws began to change. Black people got the rights that they deserved Meet Martin Luther King, Jr.

Answer the following questions AFTER you have completed this book. 1.Martin Luther King, Jr. did many things in his short life. Which of the following do you think made him most proud?
