Confirmations will be sent once it is certain that a class has enough students to run. Lunch is not provided. Students attending both morning and afternoon sessions may bring a lunch. Staff will be present between 11:30-noon. Children who participate in the morning Town Camp and attend a Summer Enrichment Program in the afternoon may also bring their lunches. They will be walked to their afternoon class by one of the camp counselors. Families will provide transportation.
3 Art Dream Catchers Grades 2-5 Alyssa LaPatra, VA Art Department Create and customize your own dream catcher inspired by Native American culture. In this workshop, you will explore the power of your dreams and how dreams are related to your own personal experiences. Each student will create a hand-crafted dream catcher that combines materials inspired by the Native American culture, things found in nature, and personal items from everyday life that reflect each person s unique dream experiences. Week of July 27-31, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Mosaic Mirrors Grades 4-7 and 9-12 (separate sessions) Alyssa LaPatra, VA Art Department Learn how to design and create your very own mosaic tile mirror! In this workshop, you will learn how to cut, glue, and arrange pieces of stained glass to create a beautiful mosaic of your choice. Let your imagination inspire and guide you during this fun and unique handson experience. *$10 materials fee* Week of July 6, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Gr 4-7 Week of July 20, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Gr 9-12 Math Math Literacy for the SAT and ACT Exams Grades 9-12 Shana DeRocco, NHS Math Department Do you have trouble understanding what the math questions are asking on the SAT or the ACT? Are you running out of time when trying to complete the math sections on the SAT or the ACT? If you answered yes to either of these questions, this session is for you. During this weeklong session, we will investigate strategies to help improve your ability to understand what the questions are asking. Not only will this help you improve the speed at which you are completing questions, but we will also explore how the TI Graphing Calculator can help. By the end of the week, you will have materials that you can bring home and study with. No textbooks necessary; please bring your TI Graphing Calculator to class (TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, TI-NSpire with 84 Plus Keypad). Week of July 6, morning session (8-11:30am) Health & Fitness Stay Active! Grades 3-5 Jeff Parisi, Birchwood Elementary Stay active this summer! Join us as we play lots of different sports and fun outdoor/indoor games. We will have a week filled with football, kickball, soccer, and more. We will also play running games including capture the flag, wall ball, and jail break! It will be a week of fun exercise. Make sure to bring lots of water and a healthy snack each day. Weeks of July 6 and 20, afternoon sessions (12-3:30pm) Literacy College Essay and Application Workshop Grades 9-12 Kristin Richard, NHS English Department Getting anxious about the college application process? You are not alone. Join us as we review and work toward completion of the Common Application essay and supplemental writings. Get a head start college application deadlines begin in October! Students will need to bring their Naviance username and password to the first class. Week of July 27, morning session (8-11:30am) Science & Technology Introduction to Computer Programming with Scratch Grades 3-5, 6-8 (separate sessions) Stephanie Graseck, NHS Math Department The Scratch program was designed to make the process of learning to program easier and less frustrating for beginners. Some of the characters in this program are a cat, fish, and soccer ball. However, students can also create their own characters to program. Students construct programs by dragging and dropping code elements, which removes the possibility for making syntax errors. And, the animations enable the students to see their mistakes as they problem solve to make their animations work correctly. Students will enjoy creating their own games and drawings which they can share with friends and family. Week of July 20, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Gr 3-5 Week of July 27, morning session (8-11:30am) Gr 6-8
4 Introduction to Computer Programming with Python Grades 7-8 Stephanie Graseck, NHS Math Department The Python program was designed with a gentle learning curve to make programming easier for beginners. The students will learn to translate their problem solving techniques into the written computer programming language. Students are able to run programs in the midst of creating their work. This enables the students to see their mistakes as they problem solve to make their games work correctly. Week of July 13, morning session (8-11:30am) Introduction to Computer Programming with Story Telling Alice Stephanie Graseck, NHS Math Department The Story Telling Alice program was designed to make the process of learning to program easier and less frustrating for beginners. Some of the characters in this program are Alice, knights, and dragons. Students construct programs by dragging and dropping code elements, which removes the possibility for making syntax errors. And, the animations enable the students to see their mistakes as they problem solve to make their animations work correctly. Week of July 13, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Introduction to Robotics & Programming Students will learn about programming using the LEGO RCX robot and Mindstorms programming language. Students will work through a series of challenges using a variety of STEM subject areas. The final challenge will be a robot competition in which the students will design and program the system as part of a 2-person team. Other challenges may include robot tug-of-war (gears and gear ratios), mazes (navigation), assembly lines (manufacturing), and more! *$5 materials fee* Week of July 20, morning session (8-11:30am) Solar Energy & Engineering Grades 4-7 Michael Petrone, VA Technology Department Students will learn the concepts of solar energy, as well as the idea of up-cycling materials. Students will use STEM concepts to design and create solar cookers and/or solar ovens. Students will test, evaluate, and modify their creations by taking measurements and preparing a variety of foods. *$10 materials fee* Week of July 13, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Mechatronics: Electricity, Robotics, & Automation Michael Petrone, VA Technology Department This course will give students hands-on learning with different areas of robotics. Students will learn about electricity, hydraulics, and engineering design to build robots, hydraulic robot arms, as well as learn to program a robotic brain and make an autonomous system. *$15 materials fee* Week of July 27, morning session (8-11:30am) Engineering Challenge Students will be presented with a variety of mini engineering challenges throughout the week. Challenges may include such topics as structures, vehicles, systems, and more. The intent is to give students the opportunity to test their design and problem solving skills in a fun creative environment. Students will end the course with a variety of artifacts that were developed as a result of this course. *$5 materials fee* Week of July 27, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Up-cycle Design & Creation Students will learn about the concept of up-cycling in order to design and create various artifacts. This will be based on each student s own interests and designs. Artifacts may include, but are not limited to, furniture, jewelry, artwork, and other craft projects. The goal of this course will be to allow students to bring their designs to life in a fun and safe environment, as well as integrate STEM concepts like electricity and engineering principles. *$15 materials fee* Week of July 20, afternoon session (12-3:30pm) Web Design & Creation Students will learn the basics of web design and coding and use that knowledge to design and create their own websites. This course will cover photo editing and site mock-ups, HTML coding, and more. Students will leave the course with a working website, and the foundational knowledge to continue learning independently for years to come. Week of July 13, morning session (8-11:30am)
5 Registration: Please enroll your child for the grade he or she will be enrolled in next year. Complete the registration form below and mail it to the District Office. Include a check for $150 per class plus any applicable materials fees (noted in descriptions). Checks and money orders should be made out to Niskayuna Central School District and are due by May 1, Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Acceptance into a class will be confirmed as soon as it is clear that a class has reached its minimum number of students. Specific class locations will be included in those confirmations.
