3 Course Introduction In a rapidly changing business world, the demand for finance professionals has never been greater and the role of the accountant is no longer confined to being numerically competent. Today s complex global economy demands that finance professionals are multi-skilled with a strong strategic outlook. They must be ready to influence management decision-making at the highest level. This programme prepares students to be able to meet these challenges and responsibilities. The programme is designed to produce Accounting and Finance graduates who are employable, socially responsible and are able to positively contribute to society. The overall aim of the programme is to enable graduates to make an effective and ethical contribution to the dynamic and fastchanging financial services industry. Students are expected to develop the key skills required to perform to the very best of their abilities. The programme is appropriate for those who wish to pursue a career in industry, commerce, the public sector, or the voluntary sector. It also provides useful introduction to the worlds of accountancy and finance practice in both the private and public sectors. A unique feature of this programme is that it is linked to two globally-recognised professional bodies the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI). Career and Professional Planning In order to boost students employability and record their on-going development, the programme includes a well-developed self-evaluative, Career and Professional Planning element, which is embedded within the programme and is studied at each level. You will acquire skills for improved study and career management and reflect how your learning relates to a wider personal and professional context. You will complete a range of assessments into personality, interests, values, skills, learning needs and self-employment potential, in order to discover the wide range of work available. The Career and Professional Planning element also includes information search mechanisms, learning methods, reflective practice, analytical dexterity, decisionmaking, communication, negotiation skills, ethical issues, and other employability skills. Students also have the opportunity to record their on-going skills development in the portfolio which builds throughout the programme providing invaluable evidence that can be used to aid their future career and employability. 3

4 What you will study Level C (Year One) Accountant in Business To introduce knowledge and understanding of the business and its environment and the influence this has on how organisations are structured and on the role of the accounting and other key business functions in contributing to the efficient, effective and ethical management and development of an organisation and its people and systems. Financial Accounting To develop knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and concepts relating to financial accounting and technical proficiency in the use of double entry accounting techniques including the preparation of basic financial statements. Single Honours students will also study: Investment Management This course provides an understanding of investment management, the underpinning disciplines of economics, mathematics and accountancy as well as the tools of the trade the different asset classes, the markets, investment analysis, portfolio management and performance measurement. This course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of new entrants to the finance industry, providing an overview of all areas of investment. UK Regulations and Professional Integrity This course provides an introduction to knowledge of the regulations and legislation underpinning the financial markets and the conduct of investment business. This course will cover the financial services industry, Provision and Regulatory Framework, UK Financial Services and Consumer Relationships, the Regulatory Infrastructure of UK Financial Services including European Union Directives and FCA and PRA Supervisory Objectives, Principles and Processes and the Integrity and Ethics in Professional Practice. All students will also study the Career and Professional Planning Level One course. Level I (Year Two) Management Accounting This course will develop knowledge and understanding of how to prepare and process basic cost and quantitative information to support management in planning and decision-making in a variety of business contexts. Financial Reporting This course will develop knowledge and skills in understanding and applying accounting standards and the theoretical framework in the preparation of financial statements of entities, including groups and how to analyse and interpret those financial statements. 4

5 Single Honours students will also study: Corporate and Business Law This course will develop knowledge and skills in the understanding of the general legal framework, and of specific legal areas relating to business, recognising the need to seek further specialist legal advice where necessary. Taxation This course provides an introduction to knowledge of the tax system including Income Tax liabilities of individuals, Corporation Tax liabilities of individual companies and groups of companies, chargeable gains arising on companies and individuals, inheritance tax liabilities of individuals, National Insurance contributions on employees, employers and the self-employed and Value Added Tax on incorporated and unincorporated businesses. All students will also study the Career and Professional Planning Level Two course. Level H (Year Three) Performance Management To develop knowledge and skills in the application of management accounting techniques to quantitative and qualitative information for planning, decision-making, performance evaluation, and control. Also, the course covers cost accounting techniques, decision-making techniques, business resources and risk, budgeting techniques, planning and control and performance of a business from both a financial and non-financial viewpoint. Financial Management The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills expected of a financial manager responsible for the finance function of a business, relating to issues affecting investment, financing and dividend policy decisions. Also, the course will cover financial management functions and impact of the economic environment, capital management techniques, investment appraisal and sources of business finance. Single Honours students will also study: Audit and Assurance This course will examine the Assurance engagements, external audit and its regulatory and ethical framework, internal audit and performance management and its relationship with the external audit, role of the Auditor and planning an audit of financial statements, information systems and internal controls, objectives of audit engagements and the application of the International Standards on Auditing, audit planning and the Audit report. Ethical Finance and Socially Responsible Investment This course will develop knowledge and skills in socially responsible investing and ethical finance sustainability including analysis, comparative analysis regarding investment and social theories that support socially responsible investing, ethical finance and conventional finance. Also the course will cover strategies for socially responsible investing, investment decisions from investor and speculator perspectives to meet financial and social objectives and synergistic financial and social investment strategies and analysis, evaluating investments and social objectives together. All students will also study the Career and Professional Planning Level Three course. 5

6 Employability and Career Opportunities Knowledge of accounting and finance principles and the acquisition of management skills are increasingly seen as essential prerequisites by many employers. Graduates will be well prepared for a rewarding career in accountancy, credit control, financial services, investment and profit analysis, purchasing, as a business adviser and other related financial and business professions. A job in Accountancy can help you gain a high salary and succeed in your chosen field, for example as a Chief Financial Officer, Director or Partner in an accounting firm, Forensic Accountant or Business Adviser. You may choose to go on to further study at Liverpool Hope. 9 Academic Staff Profiles Dr Adel Ahmed, Senior Lecturer in Accountancy and Award Director Dr Adel Ahmed is Head of the Accounting and Finance Cluster, Liverpool Hope Business School (LHBS). He gained his BSc (Hons) and MSc in Accounting from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, and received his PhD in 1999 from Liverpool Business School. He has taught Accounting and Finance courses at various higher education institutions, including The University of Alexandria and Leeds Metropolitan University. He is leading the development of the Accounting and Ethical Finance area at Liverpool Hope University. His teaching/ research specialisms and interests are Investment Management, Ethical Finance and Socially Responsible Investment, and he has published in academic journals in the Accounting and Ethical Finance area. These publications also resulted in delivering research seminars at Liverpool Hope University and a variety of other universities; Durham University Business School, Edinburgh University Business School, Brunel University Business School, Salford University Business School and University of Bedfordshire, Business School. He has given several presentations at Finance and Accounting conferences, mainly in the areas of ethical investment and accounting. He is an expert in the supervision of postgraduate researchers in Accounting and Ethical Finance. He is a Member of the British Accounting Association (BAA), UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association and the Higher Education Academy Business, Management, Accountancy and Finance Subject Centre (BMAF). Dr Ahmed is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) of Emerald Group Publishing, Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management and an academic reviewer for peer-reviewed international journals. 9

10 Dr Federica Salvatori Dr Federica Salvatori gained her BSc and MSc degrees in Accountancy and Law from the University of Perugia (Italy). After completing the PhD programme in Business Administration in 2011 at the University of Urbino (Italy) and spending a visiting period at DePaul University of Chicago (USA), she started working at the Business School of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) as a Post Doctoral Researcher. Dr Salvatori has also completed the three year Chartered Accounting training to become a Chartered Accountant in Italy. Dr Salvatori s research mainly focuses on financial accounting as well as on risk management practices both in private and public organisations. She has taught both Financial Accounting and General Business Management to undergraduate students for two years at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She has also lectured on administrative reforms in the US public sector within an Executive Masters programme organised by the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy. 10
