1 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM HOURS: The Texas Department of License and Regulations requires a student to earn 1500 hours and pass the state licensing exam for an operator s license. A high school program requires 1000 clock and 500 academic hours. The student must receive 1000 clock hours, 500 academic hours and take the Cosmetology exam to receive credit for this course First year students must acquire 2 hours and 35 minutes per day for a total of 12:55 hours per week. There are 445 hours available during the first year. First year students are required to have 435 hours by the end of their first year in order to enter the second year of the program. Second year students must stay until 6:00 PM on Mondays and 4:00 for the rest of the week to ensure completion of all 1000 hours. All hours must be earned by the end of April their senior year. A tardy is time lost on the clock and will add up very fast; therefore, students must be on time for class each and every day. If the student does not attend class Monday during school hours, she/he cannot come Monday afternoon at 3:30-6:00 PM. The teacher must OK all makeup hours. I cannot give student hours if the student is not here. Since every hour of these 1000 hours is needed to successfully train a student, the student must be in class on time and must maintain good class attendance. As you can see, there is little room for missed hours. Attendance is a MUST!! Students will be graded on the following criteria: Hours missed grade earned Hours are entered into the state data base every month. The students will receive a notice at the beginning of each month telling of the status of their hours.
2 PICTURES: Three current pictures (1 ½ X 1 ½ ) are required for the following purposes: One picture must be displayed in the lab on the student s permit as the state inspector will check records periodically. The two remaining pictures will be for the student s permanent file at Carrigan Career Center. Only the instructor and the director have access to these confidential records. COSTS/SUPPLIES: The Kit: The student must purchase a kit with all the necessary tools for use in the class and at home. At the end of the first year, the student must replace all items missing from the kit. The kit will be purchased from Carrigan and will cost the student approximately $ The Textbooks: Textbooks are to be purchased by the student at a cost of approximately $ This cost includes a hard cover textbook, a theory workbook, and a year subscription for Milady Web tutor. The Milady Web Tutor, along with the online state licenser test prep will need to be re- purchased the senior year. All book and workbooks are property of the student. Club Membership: Each student is a member of the Skills USA organization and membership dues are approximately $20.00 each school year. Membership enables each student to participate in the district and state competition. Participation and projects also count toward classroom grades. The students have meetings and activities and will do projects to assist in the cost of going to contest in the spring. It is a lot of fun for all the students and teaches them leadership skills, job application skills, and necessary attitudes to prepare them for their roles in life. Uniforms: Each student must be in uniform to receive hours for that day. Uniform pants are available at The Uniform Shop on 9 th Street for $ The smock may be purchased through Carrigan ONLY and must be monogrammed at the uniform shop and the price of monogramming is included in the $24.00 pant payment to the Uniform Shop. A short sleeve and long sleeve shirt will be worn under the smocks and will be purchased through Carrigan for approximately $25.00.

Absences: Absences need to be reported to Carrigan at ext: or Grades: Six week grades are earned in the following manner: A. Assigned classroom work from textbooks: (33.3% of grade) B. Practical sheets: these are designed to show how the student has progressed in the practical portion of the program. Students must complete the practical book each semester to be eligible for returning the next semester. (33.3% of the grade) C. An Hour grade each month. (33.4% of the grade) **All first year students must have a grade average of 70 and must have completed hours in order to be in the second year cosmetology program. **All students must maintain a satisfactory conduct grade to be enrolled in the class their senior year. An evaluation will be given at the end of each semester to determine if they will return the next semester. Attitude, attendance and grades will all be determining factors on whether students will return their senior year. Additional Information Important to the Career of Cosmetology: 1. Cosmetology is a profitable, fast-paced, exciting career. We teach professionalism so the students will learn to conduct themselves in a professional way and dress in a professional manner. Students not in proper uniform will not receive any hours; therefore, for 2.35 hours credit the student MUST be in full uniform every day. 2. Cosmetology is a trade almost solely designed to work in close contact with people. Therefore, clean uniforms and proper personal hygiene is mandatory. Personal hygiene includes clean hair, teeth, and nails. Deodorant is a must. Uniforms are to be taken home each Friday and washed for the next week. 3. Cosmetology students learn by doing. Each student must participate in the classroom by getting and giving haircuts, manicures, pedicures, facials, bleaches, hair coloring, permanent waves, and lash and brow work. Students must participate at all times and they will be expected, in due time, to work on the public in our lab. We encourage parents to come and use our services so our students can get all the experience they possibly can.
