3 INTRODUCTION The bjective f this manual is t prvide yu as a reader with a cmprehensive material in rder t help yu t start t play Flrball in yur schl, club, city r cuntry. The material gives yu hints and tips hw t get started and teaches yu step by step hw t get peple invlved and hw t face and win the challenges when establishing a team r an rganisatin. Hpefully this infrmatin will be helpful t yu as a guideline fr creating the best envirnment fr the sprt. This material has been created by Anniina Paavilainen, Emily Kh, Merita Bruun and Jhn Liljelund and edited by Merita Bruun and Jhn Liljelund. The number f players and teams are increasing every year and there is n sign that the psitive develpment wuld stp. Flrball is an invasive sprt fficially played with five field players and a galkeeper n each side. It has similarities with bth field hckey and ice hckey but als sme similarities with ther team ball sprts. It is played with a plastic stick and a plastic hllw ball, with hles. Flrball is the sprt f tday and is becming the universal sprt f tmrrw. During the 25 years f Flrball, the develpment and grwth f the sprt has been amazing. Since the first Flrball Federatin was funded in 1981 in Sweden, the sprt has spread all ver the wrld and it is nw played in ver 60 cuntries. WFC 2008 picture by Ondrej Klema/CFbU

5 The main bjective is t scre as many gals as pssible in the ppnent s gal and f curse t prevent the ppnent frm scring in yur wn gal. The skill level f the players determines the team tactics f the game and smetimes, when less skill is invlved the best tactic is t have n tactic at all and just play. At the elite level, where the best players in the wrld cmpete, the technical and tactical skills are increased t a higher level. One f the reasns behind the ppularity f Flrball is the easiness t start playing: n specific skills are needed in the beginning and the rules are simple, yu just need sprt shes, a stick and ball. Flrball can be played as a fitness sprt where equality between the genders is well realized. Mixed Flrball has been played since the early stages f the sprt. In additin t schl children and students, tday many wrkplace and special interest grups have als taken up Flrball, and the s called inter-cmpany matches have cme t stay. The ppularity f Flrball can therefre als be explained by the easiness f the sprt. Practically everyne has the pprtunity t play Flrball (Unihckey in German) - if nt within a sprts club, then in an unfficial grup. Anther imprtant feature is related t the sprt itself: the threshld t begin playing Flrball is lw, as far as financial investments and skills are cncerned. Natinal leagues and team matches are ffered t mre skilful players. The natinal Flrball league is nt merely a secnd chice fr ball players, but a vigrus, elite sprt requiring a great deal f practice. 6 Alternative sprt Flrball can be intrduced t peple als as an alternative sprt. Athletes wh already have experience frm ther invasive games can be attracted t the sprt. Fr example in Canada, the sprt was intrduced t ball hckey players, an indr hckey game but withut ice, and ice hckey players; a target grup that is easily reachable. The players adapted t Flrball easily because f the similarity f the games, like it is with all stick and ball sprts. They were als impressed because f the skill and n cntact part f the sprt. The safeness f the sprt can be used as an attractin especially with yunger children. In Asia and Australia a lt f the players wh pick up Flrball have a backgrund in field hckey. The advantage with Flrball is that it is playable regardless f size, strength and ther skills f the players.

7 HISTORY OF FLOORBALL Sme rts f Flrball are already frm The idea f plastic sticks (with bth shaft and blade) was brn in a plastic industry in Lakeville, Minneaplis, USA. They intrduced sticks and ther plastic material under the name Csm. Csm flrhckey has grwn afterwards in bth USA and Canada. Since many years game series have been played in Nrth America and Canada, but mainly fr children and yuth. One f the biggest turnaments, Flrhckey Turnament, was arranged fr the first time in the beginning f 1960 s in Battle Creek Michigan. The first Csm-plastic stick was intrduced in Sweden 1968 and after that a lt f different versins f games with balls and pucks were played in Sweden. In the middle f the 1970 s the idea f trying t establish ONE sprt based n the Csm-material and with influence frm basketball and ice hckey. VALUES OF FLOORBALL Equality, Fair play and Slidarity Flrball als teaches imprtant values such as nn-discriminatin, fair play and slidarity, which are imprtant values t teach especially fr the children taking part in sprts. Flrball has develped t its present frm, frm a game which was first played in Gthenburg, Sweden in the early 1970 s. The sprt has been influenced quite a lt by street hckey, the street versin f ice hckey. Flrball was first brught t Sweden by students and frm there it has been spread thrughut Eurpe and the rest f the wrld. The IFF respects the rights, dignity and wrth f every persn and will treat everyne equally within the cntext f Flrball, regardless f age, ability, gender, ethnicity, natinality, religius belief, sexuality r scial/ecnmic status.

The IFF is prmting Men and Wmen Wrld Flrball Champinship s equally and the Wrld Champinships have been played fr bth men and wmen since the IFF fundatin. The equal prmtin cncerns rganisatin rights, advertisement, the cmpetitin structure and TV. The IFF is living accrding t the Olympic Charta and mst f the Natinal Flrball Assciatins are accepting the ethics Charta f their respective Natinal Olympic Cmmittee r Sprts Cnfederatin. In 2006 the IFF decided t endrse the General Assciatin f Internatinal Sprt Assciatin s (GAISF) Panathln Declaratin n Ethics in Yuth Sprt. The Finnish Flrball Federatin and the Swiss Flrball Assciatin are als actively invlved in prmting dping free sprt. The Finnish Men s and Wmen s Flrball Natinal teams are included in the Clean Sprts Star grup, which frwards the message f clean sprts. The Swiss Flrball Assciatin participates in a natinal campaign called Cl and Clean and the Swiss natinal team player, Simne Berner, was elected ambassadr fr wmen s sprt in the Cl and Clean campaign. In additin the IFF prmtes clean sprt and has develped its anti-dping plicy and intensified the fight against dping in Flrball. Assciatins and clubs taking part in IFF events are being asked t assist IFF in implementing the anti-dping prgram, while any player participating in an IFF Event may be required nt nly t underg a dping cntrl after a match, but als t underg ut-f-cmpetitin cntrls. 9 Wmen s U19 WFC 2008 picture by Mika Hilska/FFF All the IFF champinships are played with regulated materials (IFF Material Regulatin), i.e. IFF has very strict rules fr the stick, ball and rink dimensins, due t the safety f the players. All material shall be apprved by IFF and there must t strengthen the cmpetitiveness f Flrball as the equality aspect twards genders is an imprtant strategic questin fr the future develpment f the sprt.the aim with the Equal Treatment prject is t make different psitins within the rganisatin attractive fr bth genders in rder t find the right cmpetence and the right persn fr a specific task and t increase the amunt f female players and vluntary wrkers. There are als ther benefits with the equality prject as there is a great ptential in the girls and wmen when trying t find new members t increase the ttal amunt f licensed Flrball players. As Flrball is wrking actively fr equal treatment it can als be cnsidered an advantage when fr example investments fr new facilities are being cnsidered. It can be mtivating fr pliticians t invest in a sprt, which is cnsidered equal. Ter Tiitu is ne f the Finnish Natinal team players that are prmting clean sprts. Als the IFF Member Assciatin prmte the fair play and equality values and fr example the Swedish Flrball Federatin started an Equal Treatment prject in 2008 in rder

10 BASIC RULES OF FLOORBALL The rules fr Flrball are built n the premises f nt using the stick t harm the ppnent in any way. Despite the fact that Flrball is a fast sprt, there are quite little injuries if yu keep in mind the basic rules, which are listed belw: The game is played with 3 t 5 field players and a galie depending n the curt size. Teams cnsist f a minimum f 6 and a maximum f 20 players. Game is played with effective time 3 perids f 20 minutes, in sme cases 3 x 15 minutes are used t fit the game inside the ne hur limit. A 50 cm high rink surrunds the field (lk fr hints if there is n rink, under Mdifying the Facilities). The gal size is 115 cm by 160 cm and in frnt f it is a crease (2.5 m by 1 m) where nly the galie can be althugh the ball may be played frm there by a field player with a stick. The galkeeper area is 4 m by 5 m and this is the area in which the galie may play nrmally. The galkeeper has n stick. The galie must nt hld the ball fr mre than 3 secnds and when thrwing the ball, it must hit the flr befre passing the centre line. If the ball ges ut f the rink/field the ther team can cntinue play 1 meter away frm the spt where the ball went ut. If the ball ges ut frm the end, the ther team cntinues frm the crner spt. When given a free hit, the ppnent must be at least 3 meters away frm the ball (sticks included). The ball may be kicked, but nt mre than nce and nt t a team mate. The ball must nt be played with the hands r head. The ball may be played frm the air if it is belw the knee level. N frm f pushing r physically tackling the bdy is allwed, but yu may play shulder t shulder. Players may nt play withut a stick. Yu are nt allwed t jump and play the ball at the same time. The ball may nt be played if a hand r bth knees are n the grund. (Only ne knee is allwed). 11 THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SMALL FIELD AND BIG FIELD PLAY Small Field Game Flrball Play area accrding t the space available Rink sized 20x40 meters surrunded by a rink that is 0,5 meters high A plastic stick is used t play a plastic ball with hles. It is frbidden t blck, hit and lift the ppnent s stick. Als kicking and hlding the ppnent s stick is frbidden as well as playing the ball between the ppnent s legs. N galkeeper. 3 t 5 field players. A semi circle shaped area marked in frnt f the gal, radius f 1,5 meters. The players are nt allwed t tuch the gal area with any bdy part but it is allwed t jump ver the area and play inside the area with the stick. If a player f the attacking team invades the gal area, the ppsing team is awarded by a free hit. If a player f the defending team invades the gal area, the ppsing team is awarded by a penalty sht. The penalty sht is sht frm the ppsing gal twards the gal. 5 field players and a galkeeper. See the curt size n page 15. Only the galkeeper is allwed inside the smaller area in frnt f the gal cage. It is hwever allwed t play inside this area with a stick. The galkeeper is allwed t take pssessin f the ball nly inside the gal area. If a player f the attacking team invades the galkeeper area, the ppsing team is awarded by a free hit. If a player f the defending team invades the galkeeper area, the ppsing team is awarded by a penalty sht. The penalty sht is taken frm the centre dt twards the gal cvered by a galkeeper. The ball shuld nt stp r taken backwards during the penalty sht. A gal is scred when the ball crsses the gal line. A gal is scred nly with stick but can als be bunced frm a player. After a gal, the game is cntinued with a free hit by the nn-scring. During the free hit the teams have t stay n their wn curt side and the ball shuld be played t the starting team s curt side. Hlding the stick There are tw different sides f the stick left and right depending n the hand which is lwer when hlding the stick. Usually the side f the stick chsen depends n whether yu are left r right handed. Mst Flrball players are using a left stick because they are right handed. Hwever, the stick shuld be chsen based n which side feels mre natural. Previus experience with ther sprts might affect n hw yu hld the stick. Fr example, field hckey players tend t chse a right stick. A very gd way t help the players t chse which sided sticks they shuld use is t place the stick in frnt f the player and ask him t pick it up with just ne hand. If the persn picks it up with the right hand, it wuld be advisable t start playing with a left sided stick. As a cmparisn mst tennis players wh are right handed plays with the racket in the right hand. Individual technique In rder t play the game, yu need t knw hw t execute certain skills. These skills are: Shting Passing and receiving Dribbling The manual, Individual technique and tactics, intrduces hw t teach the basic skills but the best way t learn wuld be t have smene t shw yu the techniques. In case yu have n ne t demnstrate the skills t yu, yu can search the internet fr vides r games where these skills are present, r see the clips frm the Unihckey Techniques DVD r the IFF Flrball Technique DVD thrugh the IFF web site. The IFF Flrball Technique DVD als includes galkeeper training. Once yu have learnt these skills yu can start spreading the sprt by teaching ther peple hw t play. This yu can d by setting up Flrball events r giving lessns. Yu can find mre infrmatin n hw t plan an event r an intrductry lessn frm this material. 12

13 LEARNING TO TEACH The IFF has different instructinal materials which can be used t educate bth teachers and players. The Yuth Start Up Kit has been translated in nine different languages already but in case it is nt available in yur native language it wuld be gd t have it translated. It wuld als be best t have ther instructing and caching materials in yur wn language t make the access t the sprt easier. In rder t d s, it wuld be essential t have at least the fllwing infrmatin prvided t the newcmers in Flrball: Basic Rules Equipment needed Measurements f the curt Basic skills These tpics can be extracted and translated frm the fllwing materials: Yuth Start Up Kit Teaching Individual Technique and Tactics Team Tactics Special Situatins and Galtending Unihckey Technique DVD IFF Flrball technique DVD With the aid f these materials it shuld be pssible t cnduct an intrductry lessn, but these things shuld be emphasized: Be inspiring and psitive See that everybdy has the right equipment Pay attentin t the safety issues Be rganised and crrectly equipped (whistle, tactic bard, pen, stp watch, vests, cnes) Be clear with the instructins Demnstrate as much as pssible Minimize waiting time and maximize repetitins See that everybdy is actively invlved and gets t play Picture by Petri Suni/FFF At the end f the lessn, yu shuld ask fr feedback and make sure that all participants have understd the imprtant parts f the game. As a cnclusin fr the lessn, yu can have a mini turnament amngst the participants. In the table yu can see an example f the structure f a practice sessin. It is imprtant t plan the sessin befrehand and have it n paper. Equipment is als essential such as a whistle, a tactic bard, a pen, a stpwatch, vests and cnes, but the mst imprtant equipment wuld f curse be sticks and balls. Keep track f time and be clear with instructins. The time frame can be altered depending n the age f the participants. As yung children are nt able t cncentrate as well as adults, it is imprtant t keep the sessin simple, shrt and fun. Fr yung children (5-8 years) 60 minutes can be t exhausting s 45 minutes might be enugh. With lder participants the time can be altered up t 90 minutes with a lnger game sectin. Yu shuld make sure that the majrity f the participants are active at all times and that there is n standing in lines. Als the amunt f repetitins in ne drill shuld be maximized. The participants shuld have as much cntact with the ball as pssible. 13

15 FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT Flrball is easy t start because it desn t require much equipment. Yu nly need a stick, ball and shes and f curse clthes suitable fr exercise. Gals and Rink The gal is sized 115cm (h) x 160cm (w) x 60cm (d). It is made frm pipe shaped material (65mm) and painted red. The gal cage is furnished with a net. The rink shall be 40m by 20m with runded crners. Here is the size f an fficial rink with the sizes f the galkeeper area and gal area. 16 Stick The stiffness and the length f the shaft and the material and the shape f the blade are imprtant factrs when chsing a stick. The length f the stick shuld reach t smewhere between yur chest and belly buttn. Yu shuld nt use a stick that is t lng r t shrt fr yu because it has a clear impact t the safety f the game and t the learning skills. Picture by Exel Flrball When yu buy a stick, the blade f the stick is usually slightly bended r hked either t the left r right r even straight. A lt f players feel that this is enugh, but sme player s feel that an additinal curve/hk t the blade gives a better feel fr the ball and therefre likes t hk the stick even mre. curve the blade mre than three times. Hking the blade means that yu additinally curve the blade s that it becmes cncave r that yu make a small cup fr the ball in the end f the blade. The vast majrity f sticks n the market already have a slight hk. If yu curve the blade t many times, the blade will becme sft r can even break. What ften happens is that the receiving f the ball becmes bumpy and the ball tends t bunce, when the blade is curved t much. It is advisable t start playing with a stick that is as straight as pssible, since that gives yu the best pssibility t learn The curve n the blade will mstly affect yur frehand shts, giving them mre speed and accuracy, but it als requires a better handling technique in rder t keep yur passes n the flr, since the curve will frce the ball up in the air. The curve als makes it easier t dribble the ball frward. With a curved blade, it will be easier t perfrm different feints, when the ball will stick t the blade. One f these special tricks is the Zrr, where the ball is picked up n the tp f the blade and then kept there using the pwer f mvement t utmatch the gravity. It is still as imprtant t remember, that backhand shts, where yu hit the ball with the back (nn-curved) side f the blade are very useful and they will becme mre difficult t perfrm if yu curve yur blade t much. Yu als need t decide if yu shall play with a left r right handed stick. Sme players are capable t use bth left and right sticks equally well; this f curse is easiest when yu use a straight blade. A gd sht is nt nly the result f a gd blade. The mst imprtant single factr is t be able t place the ball where yu want t have it. The speed, strength and the accuracy f 16

17 the sht is determined by hw fast the hands f the shter are and hw much the stick shaft flexes when shting. Flrball sticks may have a shaft flex f 23mm t 36 mm, which means that the bigger and strnger yu are the mre yu will be able t bend the shaft. These blades can therefre nly be slightly curved and must be left t rest and cl ff fr quite a lng time after making the curve. The ther mstly used material is nyln and bending that is very easy and yu can bend it as much as yu wish. Rules fr the blade The hk f the blade can t exceed 30 mm, when yu lay the blade n a flat surface. The measuring f the curve is dne s, that the stick is placed n the flr with the curve twards the flr. The curve may nt be bigger than 30 mm when yu measure the distance between the underside f the blade and the flr. If yu have a tl which is 30 mm and yu can mve it, withut lifting the stick in the space between the blade and the flr, the stick is t curved and is nt allwed t play with in fficial matches. The ppnent can at any time during a match ask the referee t measure the hk f a stick, which is being either used n the field r is kept in the substitutin zne. Hw t curve the blade In rder t be able t hk r curve the blade, the blade needs t be sft. Using a warm air blwer is the best way f heating up the blade, but yu can als warm the blade ver the stve. Let the stve get ht first and then keep the blade a few centimetres abve the ht stve fr a while. Remember t use gd glves, since the plastic material gets really ht. Then start bending the blade slwly frm side t side, until it actually feels sft. If yu try t bend the blade t hard befre it is warm and sft enugh, it might actually break. When the blade is sft, yu can then bend the blade t the preferred curve, keeping in mind that yu shall start slwly and then build up the skill t use a curved stick. When the preferred curve is achieved, put the blade t cl ff in cld water and keep it there fr a minute, let the blade then cl ff and dry fr ten minutes. If yu have never curved a blade befre, please ask fr help frm smene wh has dne it and remember that the plastic material is very ht. 17

19 The idea with certificatin is t have eye prtectin fr Flrball players, which are develped in rder t guarantee the security f the players. Starting frm the beginning f year 2007 the IFF has taken ver the testing tl frm the Swedish Flrball Federatin and there is nw CE-marked prtective eyewear specifically fr Flrball use. Althugh the IFF des nt have any rules that the gggles are mandatry the natinal assciatins have implemented their wn rules and recmmendatins especially fr junirs. In Finland it has been mandatry t use gggles in the F-junirs and in the future it will be mandatry fr all F- E- and D- junirs. In additin, clubs and districts in Finland have made mutual agreements t use prtective eyewear in their regins/clubs. A Swiss Flrball player, Luca Maffiletti, devted his diplma thesis t this subject and the cnsequence f the thesis is that there have been campaigns in Switzerland t prmte the use f prtective eye wear. All the IFF Certified Equipments: Blades, Balls, CE-marked Gggles, Sticks, Masks, Gals and Rinks are certified by as an appinted certificatin bdy by IFF. This certificatin means that the prduct fulfils technical requirements and that there is a subsequent surveillance. The Certified Flrball Equipments are fund frm the SP s (IFF certificatin bdy) web site. Yu will find the web site thrugh the Certificatin mark fund n the IFF frnt page r under LINKS. 20 SPREADING THE SPORT GETTING PEOPLE INVOLVED In the past, Flrball has mainly been intrduced in new cuntries by a Flrball missinary ; wh usually is an expatriate frm anther cuntry wh already knws hw t play Flrball r a persn wh has seen r tried Flrball smewhere. This persn has laid the fundatin and has been able t get the lcals als invlved, which demands a lt f enthusiasm and mtivatin. There are a lt f cuntries where fr example Scandinavians play Flrball, but the lcal ppulatin is nt t much invlved. First f all, yu need players. As yu have nw apprached the schls, churches, cmmunities and cmpanies in rder t get the facilities, yu might as well get them t play. When yu start playing yu need t be fur in the beginning and then yu can enlarge the grup, by inviting friends t try ut. There are different frms f Flrball, like fr example 3 vs. 3 in a table frmat, which is easy since there are n teams. Please lk up the rules fr Flrball Pints Master under Mdifying the game. The best way t develp the sprt in a new cuntry is hwever thrugh the lcal ppulatin. The lcal ppulatin s invlvement is very essential in rder t grw the sprt since the lcals are aware f the cuntries prtcls and have better cnnectins t the peple and access t the facilities. One imprtant aim shuld therefre be t get the lcal ppulatin invlved and t get the lcal ppulatin interested in playing the sprt, since that is the nly way yu can secure the grwth f the sprt n a lng term basis. Fr example in Turkey the sprt gt started by Finnish and Swedish telecmmunicatin persnnel wrking there in the early 90 s. They invited friends and lcal c-wrkers t jin in. This grup f players grew up t 30 peple playing at least nce a week. Games were played n artificial grass f the sccer fields and tennis curts, since there was n access t any sprt halls. Later n the venues were changed t indr arenas and the sprt culd develp further. Istanbul has been the main centre f Flrball in Turkey, but lately the sprt has als spread t Ankara by expanding expatriate and diplmatic cmmunities. The amunt f players in Turkey has increased frm 30 t apprximately 330 players frm the time it was first intrduced. By intrducing the sprt t an already existing grup f peple such as schl kids r students, r by c-perating with multi-sprts federatins as in Germany, makes it mre efficient when recruiting players. In this case the structures t spread the game are already built. The rganisatins have their annual meetings where cntacting and cnnecting with clubs is much mre accessible. Als by bringing the sprt t peple makes it mre cnvenient t them and they are mre easily attracted. FINDING FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT Finding the apprpriate facilities is ne f the primary tasks when creating the envirnment fr a new sprt. Cntacts can be made with lcal schls as the schls can then prvide facilities in exchange fr free intrductry lessns in Flrball. Lcal sprt halls shuld als be cntacted t ensure mre playing facilities. In case f difficulties when financing the facilities, lcal cmpanies culd be cntacted t ffer spnsrship. At the same time, the wrkers frm these cmpanies culd be prvided with an intrductry lessns and that way a new sprt t play fr their recreatin. In this way, Flrball wuld als be prmted t wrking adults and nt just schling cmmunity. Take advantage f an ld warehuse r an industrial building and turn it int a Flrball curt. Yu can search fr spnsrship and funding frm lcal cmpanies fr the funding r even the gverning sprts cuncil etc. These bdies might be interested t supprt the welfare f the lcal cmmunity. 20
