1 From time to time, our Scouts hold recruitment events. Recruitment events are advertised via posting signs and spreading the word, particularly in the team sponsor s organization. Scouts could even take an ad out in a local newspaper or school paper. They can also spread the word at their school and hang up posters or pass out flyers, with permission, in the school hallways with the date, time, and place of meeting. At the recruiting event, Team Counselors and Counselors should be sure to bring along materials for participants to take home with them. Those who attend should know ahead of time they are attending a recruitment event, however no one is going to enjoy sitting down to a speech about our Scout Programs. The recruitment activity should be a FUN activity anyone would want to participate in. Below are some examples. Pizzeria Night On pizza baking night, everyone goes to a pizzeria where each participant can make their own pizza. Scouts each make their own, as does each member of their families. Everyone has their own pizza, their own project. If Mom wants spinach on her pizza and Dad wants sausage on his pizza, that is fine. And if our Scouts want jellybeans, that is fine too! Family members might be across the room from one another, interacting with other families and other Scouts, while participating in the same activity. We offer opportunities for shared experiences by getting multiple generations and extended family members together, while 1 / 13

2 enabling them to have the freedom and independence to do their own thing. New participants also each make their own pizza. This allows families to simultaneously spend time doing the same thing, but not together, interacting with other Scouts and families and potential members. It also provides a way for parents of potential Scouts to talk easily to parents of our Scouts and get their questions answered. Bowling Night Everyone goes to the bowling alley to compete individually or in teams. Families can spend time doing the same thing, but not necessarily together. Teams can be made up of Scouts who are friends, allowing their families to bowl together. Parents get the opportunity to talk with other parents. We offer opportunities for shared experiences by getting multiple generations and extended family members together, while allowing them the freedom and independence to do their own thing. 2 / 13

3 Scouts get the chance to interact with potential new Scouts and parents of potential Scouts can talk easily with parents of Scouts to get their questions answered. Picnic Everyone can go to a picnic! Picnic activities can include the one-legged race, carry an egg on 3 / 13

4 a spoon, watermelon eating contests and other games allow our Scouts and families to have a great time while participating in the same activities simultaneously but not together. Scouts get the chance to interact with potential new Scouts and parents of potential Scouts can talk easily with parents of Scouts to get their questions answered. 4 / 13

5 Scouts will advertise in local newspapers about the picnic and put up signs throughout the community so other youth and their parents can see what is going on and come or call for more information. Interactive Meetings 5 / 13

6 We invite people to our Interactive Online Meetings. They are an ideal way to get the word out about our Scout Programs to many people all over the country at once. We host the discussion and people all over the country can join us in an online meeting. All the questions asked and answers given are seen by everyone in the meeting. 6 / 13

7 The Interactive Online Meeting format works well. A mother from California, a prospective Scout from Arkansas, and a father from Milwaukee may all have the same question. One asks the question, and everyone else gets to see the answer quickly and easily. 7 / 13

8 Mobile Petting Zoo Children love animals and a petting zoo is sure to attract many people. Animals that youth can safely pet can be on hand, such as goats and 8 / 13

9 rabbits. A petting zoo is best held in a park or somewhere else that is outdoors but easily seen and accessible. Remember, you may need a permit to bring animals into a park, and this needs to be settled before the event is held. Signs can also be placed in the area to let people 9 / 13

10 know where to go. Face Painting Another good choice is face painting. If you know someone skilled at it, set up a table and chair 10 / 13

11 either inside or outside (get permission before setting up) and put up signs around the area to let people know when and where to go. Be sure to obtain parental permission before painting a child s face. 11 / 13

12 Pirate Obstacle Course The pirate theme is a popular one. Counselors can dress up as pirates and set up an obstacle course involving running, crawling, hopping, and 12 / 13

13 other physical activities. The obstacle course is set up so that youth can capture pirate flags as they go. At the end of the obstacle course, participants receive bottles of water (donated), a pirate flag, and a sheet detailing how to stay healthy through physical activity. 13 / 13
