3 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run Premier Event in the Nation s Capital The Credit Union Cherry Blossom is Washington, DC s oldest major road race and has been the region s most popular springtime running event since It takes place the first weekend in April, on a scenic course in the shadows of the Nation s most famous monuments, near the National Mall during the world-renowned National Cherry Blossom Festival. Over 17,000 runners of all abilities take part: Olympic medalists and world champions competing for over $40,000 in prize money, dedicated running enthusiasts who want to set personal records, and weekend joggers whose goal is simply to finish 10 miles. Over 2,000 runners and walkers participate in a companion 5K Run-Walk. The event is so popular that entrants must be selected by lottery. Nearly 30,000 people apply for the coveted 17,000 spots on the starting lines.

4 Race activities start in November at the Fall Kickoff and T-shirt Debut, a downtown reception for sponsors, VIPs and the running public featuring the unveiling of the race t-shirt, and an opportunity for runners to receive guaranteed entries to the race for making a donation to charity. The highly-anticipated lottery follows in early December in which almost 30,000 runners apply for 17,000 positions. In January approximately 5,000 of the accepted participants begin a free,10 week online Virtual Training Program. Race weekend begins on Friday with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo in conjunction with packet pick-up, vendor sales and running related educational clinics at Washington, DC s historic National Building Museum. The Ten Mile Run, 5K Run-Walk and Kids Run take place on Sunday on the Washington Monument Grounds. Team competition in the 10 mile includes many corporate and government teams along with over 900 Capitol Hill staffers on 50 teams in a special Capitol Hill Challenge.
