Evaporation is a state change where a liquid changes into a gas because it absorbs energy (gets warmer) What is sublimation? Sublimation is a state change where a solid changes into a gas because it absorbs energy (gets warmer) What is deposition? Deposition is a state change where a gas changes into a solid because it releases energy (gets colder)

3 How are plants involved in the water cycle? Plants release water vapor into the air during transpiration Why does water stick to itself? Water sticks to itself because it is very polar. Describe the structure and charge of a water molecule. A water molecule has two positively charged hydrogen atoms and one negatively charged oxygen atom. How much of Earth s water supply is fresh water? 3% of Earth s water is fresh and 97% is salt water What is recharge? Recharge is water that enters an aquifer becoming part of the groundwater system.

Porosity is the percentage or amount of rock that is composed of open spaces What is polarity? Polarity is a property of a system with opposing characteristics, such as a positive and negative charge. What is adhesion? Adhesion is a force that hold molecules of different types together What is specific heat? the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a substance 1 C

5 What is a tributary? A tributary is a small stream that drains into a river What is the water table? The water table is the dividing line between the saturated and unsaturated zone. What is permeability? a measure of how easily water can flow through an aquifer What is surface water? Surface water is water found above the surface of the Earth What is groundwater? 6 What is a watershed? A watershed is an area of land that is drained by a river system What is a solvent? A solvent is a substance that is able to dissolve something else What is precipitation? Precipitation is water the falls to the Earth s surface from the clouds What is the water cycle? The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between the atmosphere, the land, the oceans, and living things How does polarity cause cohesion? Polarity causes cohesion because the water molecule is attracted to itself because it is polar. The water molecule is polar because is has a positive and negative end. The positive end of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of another molecule.

7 How does polarity cause adhesion? Polarity causes adhesion because the water molecule is attracted to other polar molecules. The molecules that are polar have a positive and negative end. The positive end of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of another molecule. Why does polarity cause water s ability to be the universal solvent? Water is known and the universal solvent because it is able to dissolve many things because of its polarity. The molecules that are polar have a positive and negative end. The positive end of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of another molecule. Why does polarity cause water to have a high specific heat? Water has a high specific heat because it is polar. It takes a lot of energy to break the bonds between water molecules because they are very attracted to each other. The amount of energy needed to heat up or break the bonds between water molecules is specific heat.
