lesson one the tribulation begins Memory Verse: For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Matthew 24:21, NASB Background: In God s timing, when the Gospel of the kingdom has been preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, the end will come (Matthew 24:14). John the Apostle received a vision of the events of the end times and wrote it down for us in Revelation. At this point in our study, the Rapture of the Church has already occurred (pretribulation view). The tribulation begins with a signed covenant with Israel, promising peace. Reflection: Take a few minutes to reflect: What are your expectations about this study for this spring? Plagues, Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls God s plagues in Exodus demonstrate God s power in judging Egypt, defeating Pharaoh, and leading Israel to freedom, much as His seals, trumpets, and bowls in Revelation will judge the antichrist and his world system. God will defeat all opposition, ultimately inaugurating the Millennial Kingdom, fulfilling His promises to believers of all ages. Comparison of Plagues in Exodus and Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls in Revelation Plagues in Exodus 7-12 Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls in Revelation 6-16 First Plague: water became blood Second Trumpet: one-third of the sea became blood Third Trumpet: one-third of fresh waters became bitter Second Bowl: all sea became blood Third Bowl: all fresh water became blood Second Plague: frogs die Second Trumpet: one-third of creatures in the sea die Second Bowl: all sea creatures die Third, Fourth, Fifth Plagues: lice, insects, Fourth Seal: death by pestilence pestilence Sixth Plague: boils and sores on man and animals Seventh Plague: hail, thunder, fire destroyed plants and trees Eighth Plague: locusts Ninth Plague: darkness Tenth Plague: death continued on next page... First Bowl: loathsome, painful, and malignant sores on beast worshippers First Trumpet: hail, fire, blood; one-third of earth/trees/grass burned Seventh Bowl: 100 pound hailstones, thunder, lightning Fifth Trumpet: demon locusts torment men Sixth Seal: sun became black, moon blood, stars fall Fourth Trumpet: one-third of sun, moon & stars were darkened Fifth Bowl: painful darkness on beast s kingdom Fourth Seal: one-fourth of world population dies Sixth Trumpet: one-third of remaining world population dies [Total: over three billion people die] 12
God s emphasis, His orderliness and organization, and His specificity are evident in these series of judgments. There are more verses in Exodus describing the plagues (Exodus 7-12) than there are describing Israel s bondage, or the call and preparation of Moses, just as there are more verses in Revelation describing the seals, trumpets, and bowls (Revelation 6-16) than there are describing the glorified Christ, the seven churches, or the New Heavens and New Earth. Each cycle of three plagues in Exodus increases in intensity and impact, with God s judgment culminating in the final tenth plague, much as the seven seals open into the seven trumpets which open into the seven bowls, all increasing in intensity and impact. Moses and Aaron were instruments of God in delivering the plagues in Exodus, much as the two witnesses will turn waters to blood and smite the earth with every plague (Revelation 11:6). Goshen was specifically exempt from many of the plagues (Exodus 8:22-23; 9:4-7, 26; 10:23; 11:7), much as several of the judgments in Revelation specifically target the throne of the beast, those who worship the beast, and those who poured out the blood of the saints and prophets (Revelation 14:9-11; 16:1-2, 4-6, 10-11, 19). The plagues, seals, trumpets, and bowls were miracles (supernatural sovereignty), signs (miracle with special significance), wonders (miracles producing wonder or awe), and mighty acts of judgment designed to display God s power, sovereignty, and omnipotence over those who dwell on the earth, His lovingkindness and patience toward His saints, and overwhelming judgment on satan, antichrist, and their kingdom. God will rescue His people and keep His promises. God will be worshipped and glorified and dwell among His people. * Great and marvelous are Thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty Revelation 15:3 NASB Daniel 9:24 27 Prophetic Panorama of the Period between Christ s Advents 69 weeks Temple one week Millennial 483 years Destroyed seven years Kingdom Olivet Apostle Temple General Birth Tribulation Christ s Discourse Experiences Destroyed Signs Pangs First Half Second Half Second Coming Matthew Mark Luke Revelation Millennial Tribulation Kingdom and Church Age 4 5 Eternity Future Thessalonians 4:13 18 chart prepared by Laurna Berg 13
day one The Prophetic Panorama chart on page 13 gives an overview of the events to come. 1. Currently, we are living in the Church Age. From the chart, list the events still to come. 2. What do you learn about the Tribulation from the following verses? Isaiah 26:21 Matthew 24:21 Luke 21:22 Romans 1:18 2 Peter 2:9 Revelation 3:10 3. According to the verses above, list God s purposes in the Tribulation. 4. Sharing: Do you think believers will be present during the Tribulation? Why or why not? Support your view with Scripture. 14
days two and three The Antichrist The antichrist will appear on the world stage at the beginning of the Tribulation. 1. Describe the attributes and actions of the antichrist found in the following verses: 2 Thessalonians 2: John 2:22,23 Daniel 7:8, 21, 25 Daniel 8:23-25 Daniel 11:21, 31, Zechariah 11:16-17 The antichrist s actions in Daniel 9:27 signal the beginning of the Tribulation. 2. What does the antichrist do? 3. Why do you think the world accepts the antichrist so readily? (2 Thessalonians 2:6, 11) 15
day four Matthew 24: 4-13, Revelation 6:1-17 Jesus described what would mark the end times to His disciples in Matthew 24: Read His words in Matthew 24:4-13 and record all the events He says will happen. In Revelation 5, a scene taking place in heaven, the only one found worthy in all of heaven and earth to open the book and to break its seals was the Lion of Judah, the Lamb Who was slain. 2. Six of the seven seals are mentioned in Revelation 6. Summarize what happens each time a seal is opened. First seal Revelation 6:2 Second seal Revelation 6:3-4 Third seal Revelation 6:5-6 Fourth seal Revelation 6:7-8 Fifth seal Revelation 6:9-11 Sixth seal Revelation 6: Digging Deeper: Compare the names of the 12 tribes in Revelation 7 with the names of the 12 tribes in Genesis 35: Why do you think the names are different? (See 1 Kings 12:28-30 and Genesis 48:5 for some insight). Memory Verse: For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Matthew 24:21, NASB 16
day five Revelation 7: According to Revelation 7:1-3, why is there a period of time in between the sixth seal and the seventh seal? 2. Who are the 144,000, according to these verses? What do you think it means that they are sealed in verses 2-3? 3. What else do you learn about the 144,000 from Revelation 14:1-5? 4. Describe the group in heaven that John sees (Revelation 7:9-17). Who are they, and what do they do? 5. In the Bible, scrolls are often associated with judgment. Read the following verses, and summarize what they say: Ezekiel 2:9-10 Zechariah 5:1-4 17
6. Read the word box at the beginning of this lesson. Write down any new insights you gain about plagues, seals, trumpets, and bowls. 7. The tables on page 19 summarize where the events in these chapters (6-20) take place and the judgments of the Tribulation. Familiarize yourself with these tables as you study the next several lessons. Write down what is important for you to keep in mind. personal response to God God has never left mankind without hope. As you reflect on the righteous judgment of God as the Tribulation begins, what gives you hope? How will that impact how you live today? Memory Verse: For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Matthew 24:21, NASB 18
