1 Course Title: BUS 240 BUSINESS STATISTICS Credit Hours: Textbook: Bluman, Elementary Statistics Brief with Dta CD and Formula Card, McGraw-Hill, ISBN , 7 th Edition, 2016 Course Description: This is a study of statistical methods related to business, including descriptive statistics, probability, binomial and normal distributions, and hypothesis testing. Teaching Methodology: This course will be taught using lecture, classroom discussion, question and answer, problem solving, homework, and tests. Evaluation Method: Four tests and a problem portfolio. The final grade will be based upon the score earned on all evaluation methods. Point value for each is as follows: Four tests (20% each = 80% of the course grade) and a problem portfolio = 20% of the course grade. The tests/final exam may consist of true/false questions, multiple choice questions, written questions, problems, or a combination of each. Points will be awarded as stated above in determining the final grade. Students must complete requirements on the due date or make acceptable arrangements with his/her instructor. In the event the student fails to complete an assignment within one week and does not notify the instructor of extenuating circumstances, a zero may be given for that test or assignment. An assignment is late when not received by the instructor at the beginning of the class in which it is due. The grade on assignments not turned-in on the due date will be deducted 20% per day and a zero assigned after five days. Grading Scale: A = B = C = D = F = Below 60 Related Program Learning Outcomes: Identify principles of managing, operating and production activities in an effective and efficient manner. BUS 240 Entrance Competencies Prerequisites with a grade of C or higher: MAT 101, MAT 110, or MAT 155. MAT 101 Learning Outcomes Understand rational numbers and apply them in applications Perform operations involving algebraic expressions Understand linear equations, ability to utilize the equations in real world applications, and ability to graph the equations Manipulate linear inequalities
2 Perform operations with exponents and polynomials Factor polynomials and solve quadratic equations by factoring OR MAT 110 Learning Outcomes Recognize characteristics of quadratic functions, functions, graph quadratic functions, and solve problems involving minimum and maximum value Find all zeros of polynomial functions and graph polynomial functions Recognize characteristics of rational functions and graph rational functions Solve and graph polynomial, rational, and absolute value inequalities Graph exponential and logarithmic functions and solve exponential and logarithmic equations Solve systems of linear equations and graph systems of inequalities Use linear programming to solve problems Perform operations on matrices and evaluate determinants Write expressions using the binomial theorem OR MAT 155 Learning Outcomes Perform the four basic operations on real numbers and perform computations using scientific notation Solve linear equations and inequalities Use the percent formulas to solve word problems, solve simple interest and compound interest problems, and calculate increase and percent decrease Convert between English and metric units of measure Use the Pythagorean Theorem and right triangle trigonometry to solve problems related to the right triangle Find the area and volume of geometric figures Organize data, and calculate the mean, median, mode, and mid-range for a group of data items BUS 240 Learning Outcomes: UNIT I 1. Demonstrate knowledge of statistical terms 2. Differentiate between the two branches of statistics 3. Identify the four basic sampling techniques 4. Explain the difference between an observational and an experimental study 5. Explain the importance of computers and calculators in statistics 6. Organize data using frequency distributions 7. Represent data in frequency distributions graphically using histograms, frequency polygons, and ogives 8. Represent data using Pareto charts, time series graphs, and pie charts 9. Draw and interpret a scatter plot for a set of paired data
3 UNIT 2 1. Summarize data using the measures of central tendency, such as the mean, median, mode and midrange 2. Describe data using the measures of variation, such as the range, variance, and standard deviation 3. Identify the position of a data value using measures of position 4. Use the techniques of exploratory data analysis, including boxplots and five-number summaries, to discover various aspects of data UNIT 3 1. Determine the number of outcomes of a sequence of events using a tree diagram 2. Find the total number of outcomes in a sequence of events using the multiplication rule 3. Find the total number of ways r objects can be selected from n objects using the permutation rule 4. Find the number of ways r objects can be selected from n objects without regard to order using the combinations rule 5. Determine sample spaces and find the probability of an event using classical probability of empirical probability 6. Find the probability of compound events using the addition rule 7.
