2 Minnesota is running out of telephone number prefixes in the 612 area code region due to increased demand for new telephone numbers used for services such as fax machines, pagers, wireless telephones and other competitive services. On February 27, 2000, Minnesota s region served by the 612 area code split into three different area codes: 612, 763 and 952 as ordered by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Telephone customers now served by the following area codes will remain the same: 651, 218, 320 and 507. With the introduction of the new area codes, it will be necessary to dial ten digits (the 3-digit area code plus the 7-digit phone number) to complete a local call between area codes. Do not dial a 1 or 0 before the 10-digit local call. This is the same dialing pattern used today in the Twin Cities area to make a local call between the 612 and 651 area codes. Long distance charges do not apply. The Minnesota PUC identified a core area that will retain the 612 area code. The remaining region was divided, roughly in half, with the boundary line approximately following Interstate 394. The 763 area code serves communities to the north of I-394 and the 952 area codes serves communities to the south of I-394. 4 Telephone numbers with these prefixes will change to the 952 area code: Telephone numbers with these prefixes will remain in the 612 area code if within the city limits of Minneapolis and St. Anthony. If within the communities of Columbia Heights, Fridley, Robbinsdale, Crystal, and Golden Valley, telephone numbers with these prefixes will change to the 763 area code: Telephone numbers with these prefixes remain in the 612 area code if within the city limits of Minneapolis. If within the communities of St. Louis Park and Edina, telephone numbers with these prefixes will change to the 952 area code: Telephone numbers with these prefixes will change to the 763 area code if located in Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, Plymouth or Medina. Telephone numbers with these prefixes will change to the 952 area code if located in St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Orono, Long Lake, Woodland, Deep Haven and Shorewood The following prefixes could be working in either the 612, the 763 or the 952 area code. The community determines the area code for telephone customers with the following prefixes where the telephone service is located. To determine the area code for the following prefixes, please refer to the list of communities beginning on Page The ten-month transition or permissive dialing period began February 27, 2000 and will extend to January 14, This transition period is intended to give consumers an opportunity to make necessary preparations and become accustomed to using the new area codes. During this transition time you will be able to complete a local call between area codes by dialing either the current seven digit telephone number, or by dialing the area code plus the seven digit phone number. The mandatory dialing date will be effective January 14, If when calling between area codes, you do not dial the full 10 digits (area code plus 7-digit number), you will receive a recording indicating
