Tips and Hints! Faye Yarroll received her first cochlear implant in 2005 and her second in Today, Faye has bilateral cochlear implants using Nucleus 6 Processors and is an active member of the Cochlear Awareness Network in Australia. Faye shares her tips and hints to help other recipients. Can I use a Landline telephone as well as my Mobile Phone with my Cochlear Wireless Phone Clip? YES As an Advocate for the Cochlear Awareness Network, I am often asked if I know of any LANDLINE Telephone that will work with the Cochlear Phone Clip. Well this document will assist with answering that question. (Note: The Cochlear Phone Clip only works with Nucleus 6 Processor/s). It covers: Using the Phone Clip with your Mobile Phone; and Using the Phone Clip with a Compatible LANDLINE Phone Once a recipient purchases their Cochlear Phone Clip from their clinic it usually does not take them long to reap the benefits of having true wireless freedom of listening to their Mobile Phone or Audio wirelessly. Using the Phone Clip with my Mobile Smart Phone Bluetooth-enabled wireless gives you control over your smartphone device. The Cochlear Phone Clip gives you a hands-free connection to friends and family using your smartphone. With Bluetooth technology, place and receive calls and adjust volume at the touch of a button. I use a Samsung Galaxy Smart phone, and it works perfectly with my Cochlear Phone Clip. I also know others that use iphones and they love using the Cochlear Phone Clip as well. It is just like using the Bluetooth in your car, but even better. I Page 1 of 11

loved the Bluetooth in my car, it was perfect (well I thought it was), but since getting the Cochlear Phone Clip I now use the Phone Clip to answer calls where ever I am. How often do you get an important Mobile Phone call when you are at the shops, or a noisy restaurant and you just can t hear the person on the other end. Well with the Cochlear Phone Clip, you just pair it with your Mobile and then you can use it to answer a call and enjoy hands-free calling direct to your Sound Processor or better still to both of your Processors at the same time if you are bilateral. No more of just hearing the phone with one ear for me. Having a direct signal to both Sound Processors gives me an amazing sound quality and great clarity. It works very well and I absolutely love it. With the Cochlear Phone Clip I don t have trouble hearing people on my mobile anymore. When I get up in the morning, I put on my watch, and my processors, and my phone clip and it pretty much stays on all day. I actually place the phone clip on my charger each night when I put my mobile phone on the charger next to it. Then it is ready for me to start a fresh day in the morning. Cochlear says The Phone Clip will provide 6 hours of talk time or 80 hours of standby time from a full charge. It really has amazing sound quality and you can use it for hands-free calling, you can use it with Bluetooth enabled navigation systems and stream music from any Bluetooth enabled device to it. Now if you buy the Cochlear Phone Clip and for example the TV Streamer, and you are streaming to watch TV and a Mobile Phone call comes in, then the Phone Clip will take priority and enable, and mute the TV streamer. So you don t miss a call. When your Mobile Phone rings, you also hear the ringing tone directly in your processor/s and when you get an SMS, it does give a couple of beeps in your processor/s, which I actually find useful as it makes me aware that I have just received an SMS message where otherwise I often miss hearing that I have received an SMS. In order to purchase the Phone Clip or find out the price, you need to contact your Cochlear Clinic. Note: you will need a software upgrade on your Nucleus 6 processor/s and remote at the time of purchasing this product if you don t have the latest software. Page 2 of 11

Using the Cochlear Phone Clip with a Compatible LANDLINE Telephone Which Home Phone to buy??? It needs to have (Bluetooth HSP Support) In order to use your Cochlear Phone Clip with your LANDLINE TELEPHONE you need to have a special phone that is Bluetooth HeadSet Compatible Profile and has HSP Support. YOU CANT JUST GO TO THE SHOP and ask for BLUETOOTH COMPATIBLE Cordless Phone or Home Phone as it may not work. It needs to have BLUETOOTH HSP Support (Headset Support) which not all telephones have. The shop attendant will be happy to sell you anything, but it won t benefit you if you get home and then find out that what you thought was Bluetooth Compatible will only allow you to connect your Mobile Phone or Multiple Mobile Phones to your LANDLINE Base Unit, but it will NOT support a Bluetooth Headset (eg The Cochlear Phone Clip). What is a Bluetooth profile? When two Bluetooth devices establish a connection, they learn about the protocols the partner device offers. Only devices that share the same protocols can exchange data, just like two humans have to agree on a common language to have a meaningful conversation. While Bluetooth defines the physical wireless connection between devices a Bluetooth profile establishes the commands and functionality these devices can exchange using the Bluetooth technology. HSP (Handset Profile) Bluetooth profile is the profile required for a typical mono Bluetooth headset operations and the Cochlear Wireless Phone Clip. HSP provides the basic functionalities needed for communications between a handset and a headset. Page 3 of 11

Looking for the right LANDLINE telephone: I found a Panasonic Cordless Telephone that will work with the Cochlear Phone Clip in case anyone is interested in knowing and it works well. There are two configurations that you can buy. One with 2 handsets and the other has 3 handsets. Be aware other phones look very similar, but they won t work if they do not have HSP Support = YES. I have tested the 2 handset Model below and it worked for me. Panasonic Model No.: KX-TG7892AZS (2 Handsets) Panasonic Model No.: KX-TG7893AZ (3 Handsets) Page 4 of 11

BUYER BEWARE: When you look at the SPECIFICATIONS of this phone, amongst the many features listed in particular you are looking for the following: Note: The Cochlear Phone Clip will not work unless you see this in the specifications so be very careful. PAIRING the PHONE CLIP to the BASE UNIT. Panasonic KX-TG7892AZS This step is easy and not difficult at all. From Step 2 go to Step 4 and press OK and you will see the Bluetooth and Headset symbol base unit. Here are the instructions from the User Manual. appear in the Display on the Page 5 of 11

Questions and Answers: I had a few Questions that I needed Answers for, so thought I would share these with you in case you have the same questions. Q: How far will the Cordless Phone (without the Phone Clip enabled) work away from the Base Unit. A: The range of the actual Cordless telephone is great and I can be anywhere in my house and I can hear/and the caller can hear me very well. I can even walk out into the front street and up a house or two and it will still work. I can be in the back yard as well, upstairs or downstairs in my house and the range is exceptionally good. Q: How far will the Cordless Phone (WITH the Phone Clip enabled) work away from the Base Unit. A: The range when using the Cochlear Phone Clip is not as far compared to NOT using the phone clip. The User manual states for best reception you should be within 10 Metres of the base unit. You definitely get the best reception when you are Page 6 of 11

within 10 metres of the base unit, however, I found I could walk around my house successfully inside the house and I could still hear the caller well, however the caller said that my voice was getting softer when I was further away from the base unit. So if you are reasonably close to the Base Unit in your home, then it would not be a problem. Q: If you have the Phone Clip connected, does that mean you can only have Landline + Phone Clip as that is using one of the Mobile connections. A: Yes. If you are regularly going to use the Phone Clip, then you will not be able to connect your Mobile Phone to the Base unit as well. Only one Bluetooth device (Cellular phone or headset) can be connected to the base unit at a time. Q: If you find you can hear on the new Panasonic Cordless Phone well without using your Phone Clip, then instead of pairing your Phone Clip Headset you can pair up to two Mobile Phones with the Base Unit. So does this mean you can use the Landline and receive calls from your Mobile phone as well to the same Cordless handset? A: Yes. You can pair up to two Mobile Phones with the Base Unit if you DO NOT PAIR or use your Phone Clip. However, if you PAIR your Phone Clip and intend using it regularly, then I would suggest that you leave it as using the LANDLINE + PHONE CLIP (Headset) only and forget about the ability to pair your mobile phone to the base unit. Q: What is the Volume like on the Cordless handsets? A: When using the Panasonic KX-TG789AZS Cordless handset I found the volume and clarity to be very good and clear. You can change the volume on the individual handsets to suit yourself either up or down. Q: If the landline phone rings, and another person in the household was to answer the phone, and the phone clip is connected, would they be able to pick up the phone and still use it normally? A: Yes. If another person in the household answers the telephone they can just pick it up and press the TALK button to take the call normally. Page 7 of 11

Q: If the landline phone rings, and another person answers the phone and the call is for you and you want to use the PHONE CLIP can you swap between NORMAL and the PHONE CLIP? A: Yes. The person who answered the call can pass the Handset to you and you press SPEAKER phone button, then press the button on your Phone Clip and it will go to the Phone Clip. If you want to go back to the handset, you can toggle between the handset and the Phone Clip. Q: What is the Speaker Phone like on the handsets? A: I found the speaker phone worked really loud and clear. I can place the handset on the coffee table between two lounge chairs and two people in the room can easily have a conversation with the caller and all parties can hear well. Q: The Panasonic KX-TG789AZS Base Unit comes with an Inbuilt Answering Machine. What if I do not want to use this answering machine as I already pay for Telstra or Optus Voice Mail on their system? A: No problems at all. You just turn off the Answering Machine capability and don t use it. Your regular Telstra or Optus Voice Mail will still work the same. Q: What happens if I turn OFF the Answering Machine and don t use it and I get a VOIC message left via Telstra or Optus? A: It will display a message on the Handset and Base Unit Display saying New Voice Mail. Then you press the VOIC programmed button and it will call Voic for you to retrieve your message. You can set your carriers number to contact Voic on the allocated programmable button. Q: Can you have your Phone Clip paired with your Mobile Phone and the Landline phone at the same time. A: Yes. You can pair up to 8 devices with the phone clip but only connect to one at a time. (I have it paired with my car, my mobile phone, my landline and my computer). Page 8 of 11

Q: What happens if you are paired with your Mobile Phone and are walking around at home, and then the Mobile Phone rings, will the Phone Clip get confused with the Landline? A: No. If the Mobile Phone starts ringing, then the Phone Clip will work normally with the Mobile Phone. Just press the Telephone Symbol Answer button on your Phone Clip and answer your Mobile call. Q: If you leave the house and just want to use the Phone Clip on your Mobile, will it auto-connect to the Phone Clip from your Mobile Phone? A: Yes. Belong as your Mobile Phone is set up to auto-connect in your Bluetooth Settings to your Hearing Aid Phone (Phone Clip), then that will continue to work the same. Q: Is there other Brand LANDLINE PHONES that have BLUETOOTH HEADSET CAPABILITY (HSP SUPPORT) that I can buy? A: You will need to do your own research and homework before you buy. Don t let the salesman tell you it is Bluetooth Compatible and will work, because many phones have a Bluetooth Symbol on them these days but it does not mean it has HSP Support = YES. Landline phones with this feature are hard to fine. Q: Auto Talk Can you lift the cordless handset and immediately answer the call without having to press the TALK button. A: Yes. You can set it up for Auto Talk which means that when you lift the handset off the base unit or the charger then you will be able to talk immediately to your caller without pressing the TALK button. Q: Does the base unit have a Shared Phonebook to save your CONTACTS. A: Yes. The Phonebook directory can hold up to 3,000 names and phone numbers to allow you to make calls without having to dial manually. Page 9 of 11
