Product Catalog Introduction THE GAGES IN THIS CATALOG The gages described in this catalog are representative of the many different gage designs Mahr Federal has supplied to ball bearing manufacturers and users. Each one has been performance proven by our customers. Where possible, gage design is based on a modification of a suitable stock model to keep costs low and speed delivery. These gages are used at all stages of production; screw machining, grinding, honing and inspection. Each gage can be adapted easily and economically to handle a wide variety of sizes, shapes and tolerances. Since Mahr Federal produces all types of dimensional gaging systems; dial indicating, air, electric and electronic, only Mahr Federal can offer the widest selection of ranges, magnifications and minimum graduations to suit almost every application. All of the gage designs in this catalog are capable of using any one or a combination of these systems. To assure that a ball bearing will meet the demands of unfailing performance and long service life, superior quality control during machining and assembly operations is imperative. Outlined below are some of the complex dimensional inspections that a bearing must pass to meet specifications. Must the gages used also be complex? Mahr Federal says, "No! Relatively simple gages will provide both the efficiency and accuracy required." This catalog shows you how. 1

4 Gages GAGES BALL TRACK DIAMETER 100B-102 per W Figure 3 A bench-mounted snap gage, Model I000B-102 per W-11506, is equipped with tungsten carbide ball contacts for checking ball track diameters of inner rings at screw machining. A cylindrical backstop helps keep the rings centered in the gage while the sensitive and reference contacts locate in the bottom of the ball track. Interchangeable contacts can be provided for gaging ball tracks of different curvatures. This gage can be removed from its bench stand and used as a hand held snap gage. In the bench stand, the gage can easily be adjusted for the best viewing angle. The Dial Indicator can be turned to face in any direction.
Gages 5 36B-6 per W Figure 4 Model 36B-6 per W is a stock design comparator for checking ball track diameters of inner rings after grinding. The gaging contacts are nominal size balls which "knockout" for easy replacement when worn. The gage is vertically oriented so that the contacts seat positively in the bottom of the ball track during gaging. A pair of operating levers provides long range retraction of the sensitive contact for easy insertion and removal of work. This gage is also ideal for use at screw machining or ball track honing and can be equipped with air or electronic gaging equipment for higher magnifications. Figure 5 By reversing the gaging contact arrangement, ball track diameters of outer rings can be checked.
6 Gages DIAMETER CONCENTRICITY 247B-704 Figure 6 Model 247B-704 uses two Dial Indicators for simultaneous checking of both ball track diameter and concentricity of the ball track to O. D. on outer rings. The gaging contacts are nominal size balls which "knock out" for easy replacement when worn. A wide range of outer ring sizes can be checked using interchangeable jaws. The gage is vertically oriented so that the gaging contacts seat positively in the bottom of the ball track. Convenient levers retract the gaging contacts for easy insertion and removal of the work. The concentricity Indicator swings aside to permit mastering with an AGD style ring.
Gages 7 247B-686 Figure 7 Model 247B-686 simultaneously checks seal groove diameter and concentricity of the seal groove to O. D. on outer rings. Operation of this gage is identical to the gage above (247B704). The gaging contacts are disc shaped for positive seating in the seal groove and easy rotation of the rings during gaging. Specially contoured, interchangeable contacts can be furnished for checking other seal grooves.
8 Gages CONCENTRICITY A247B-246 Figure 8 Model A247B-246 checks the concentricity of either the ball track to bore on inner rings (shown) or the ball track to O. D. on outer rings. The fixed contact locates in the bore of an inner ring directly opposite the sensitive contact. The sensitive contact follows the wall thickness variation (eccentricity) as the ring is rotated in the gage. For outer rings, the fixed contact locates in the ball track of the outer ring while the sensitive contact locates on the O.D. and, as above, follows the wall thickness variation. Two ball bearing rollers (the lower contacts) help keep a ring centrally located in the gage. This gage is fully adjustable over a long range so that interchangeable gaging contacts are not required.
Gages 9 CONCENTRICITY SQUARENESS 205B-2169 Figure 9 Model 205B-2169 checks the concentricity of the ball track to the O. D. on inner rings using a floating pantograph (reed spring) unit to isolate this measurement from diameter and roundness variations. The reference contact extends up from the lower pantograph and locates on the O.D. of an inner ring. The sensitive contact and the Dial Indicator are mounted on the upper pantograph. The pantograph units provide frictionless motion transfer of the lateral variation between the sensitive and reference contacts to the Indicator as a ring is rotated during gaging. Both contacts are adjustable for location and depth of the ball track. The "V" plate is adjustable for positioning various diameter rings.
10 Gages A241B-94 Figure 10 Model A241B-94 also uses a floating pantograph unit, but operation of this gage is identical to the gage above except that Dimensionair air gaging equipment has been used in place of a Dial Indicator. This gage ignores variations in ring diameter and roundness while checking squareness, and is adjustable for a wide range of ring sizes.
Gages 11 DIAMETER, CONCENTRICITY, WIDTH Model 247B-702 Figure 11 Model 247B-702 is a modified stock design comparator for checking both bore diameter and concentricity of the bore to O. D. on inner rings. Because the gaging contacts are adjustable for a wide range of ring sizes, interchangeable tooling is not needed for this gage.
12 Gages Model 247B-705 Figure 12 Model 247B-705 is a two station gage for checking both the O. D. and width of outer rings. Operation of the O.D. station is identical to the gage above except that the gaging contact arrangement has been reversed for outside measurements. The width station uses interchangeable Dial Indicator contacts to accommodate various ring widths. DIAMETER A367B-9 Figure 13 Model A367B-9 uses a dual meter Dimensionair air gage and noncontact air tooling to simultaneously check both the bore diameter
Gages 13 and O. D. of assembled bearings. Interchangeable air plugs are used for various bore diameters. Both O. D. gaging jets are adjustable to accommodate different outer rings. ROUNDNESS A247B-244 Figure 14 Model A247B-244 is a two station gage for checking both 90 and 120 roundness of the ball track on inner rings. The gage is vertically oriented so that the gaging contacts seat positively in the ball track during gaging. Interchangeable contacts permit gaging a wide range of ring sizes and ball track contours.
14 Gages A247B-248 Figure 15 Model A247B-248 checks both 90 and 120 roundness of the ball track on outer rings. Identical in operation to the gage above (247B- 244), this gage's interchangeable tooling accommodates a wide range of ring sizes and ball track contours. ROUNDNESS, SQUARENESS A247B-243 Figure 16 Model A247B-243, a two station air gage using contact tooling, checks 90 and 120 roundness of the O. D. plus squareness of the
Gages 15 O.D. to either face on outer rings. The gaging contacts are adjustable for different ring diameters. Spacer plates are used underneath the "V" plates to accommodate various chamfers on outer rings. In place of the triple-meter Dimensionair unit, three Dial Indicators may be used. This gage may also be used for checking roundness and squareness of the O. D. to either face on inner rings. WIDTH, PARALLELISM, FLATNESS A247B-247 Figure 17 Model A247B-247 is a two station gage for checking width, parallelism and flatness of either inner or outer rings. The first station uses a pair of opposed Air Probes to check ring width and face-to-face parallelism. The second station has a single Air Probe mounted in the platen next to a reference rail for checking face flatness.
16 Gages WIDTH NB-222 Figure 18 Model NB-222 is a stock design comparator equipped with two Dial Indicators for measuring both inner and outer ring widths of assembled bearings. Special two-sided nests are used to support each bearing by either an inner ring only or by an outer ring only, depending on which is being checked. Inner ring widths are displayed on the upper Dial Indicator, outer ring widths on the Lower Indicator. Two Dial Indicators are used to avoid expensive machining to extremely fine tolerances on the nest. This would be necessary if only one Indicator were used. For an inner ring width, the bearing is loaded into the inner ring side of the nest and positioned in the gage. Only the upper Indicator is read, the lower one is disregarded. For an outer ring width, the procedure is the same except that the bearing is placed in the outer ring side of the nest and only the lower Indicator is read. The gage is mastered with gage blocks positioned on the nest. Various diameter bearings are accommodated by using different nests.
Gages 17 LOCATION PARALLELISM 247B-706 Figure 19 Model 247B-706 checks the ball track to face relationship location and parallelism of the ball track to either or both faces on inner rings. A ring is positioned against the reference rail with the pantograph-mounted sensitive contact locating in the ball track. By checking at several points around the ring, both runout and location of the ball track to the bottom face is displayed on the Dial Indicator. By turning the ring over and checking again, centrality of the ball track between the faces is shown. Although primarily for use at screw machining, this gage can also be used at ball track grinding. Interchangeable contacts accommodate various ball track curvatures. All sensitive contacts have a slight chamfer on the end to prevent scratching a ring during gaging.
18 Gages 247B-707 Figure 20 Model 247B-707 Is similar to the gage above (247B-706) except that it checks the same relationships of the ball track to the faces on outer rings. PARALLELISM A256B-25 Figure 21 Model A256B-25 checks ball track to face parallelism on inner rings in assembled bearings. A bearing is placed in the fixture which supports it by the outer ring only - the inner ring is suspended. A weight rides on the top face of the inner ring only. The sensitive gaging
Gages 19 contact follows the bottom face of the inner ring as the weight and inner ring are rotated. Interchangeable fixtures and weights can accommodate various bearing sizes. A256B-24 Figure 22 Model A256B-24 is identical to the gage above (A256B-25) except that it checks the ball track to face parallelism on outer rings in assembled bearings. For this gage, the bearing is suspended by its inner ring only with the weight riding on the top face of the outer ring. The sensitive contact follows the bottom face of the outer ring.
20 Gages LOCATION PARALLELISM 75B-1614 Figure 23 Model 75B-1614 is a stock design bench gage for checking the relationship (location and parallelism) of the snap ring groove to the nearest face on outer rings. The sensitive contact is raised by pushing up the plunger at the bottom of a Dial Indicator. When a ring is positioned in the "V" plate and the contact locates on the lower face of the snap ring groove. By checking at several points around the ring, the Dial Indicator displays any lack of parallelism between the bottom face of the groove and the bottom face of the ring. The Indicator is adjustable for different groove locations.
Gages 21 DEPTH 75B-1612 Figure 24 Model 75B-1612 is a stock design bench gage for checking the depth of the seal groove from the face of outer rings. The sensitive contact is specially shaped to locate on the face of the seal groove adjacent to its entrance diameter. An outer ring is positioned on the gage against the two reference posts which provide positive positioning of the ring on the sensitive contact.
22 Gages RADIAL CLEARANCE 247B-709 Figure 25 Model 247B-709 checks the radial clearance of the retainer over the balls in assembled bearings. A bearing is held in gaging position by a special fixture that grips the bearing by its retainer only. For gaging, a bearing is placed on the bottom half of a fixture with three retainer rivets resting on three prongs. The top half of the fixture is positioned on top of the bearing with its three prongs locating on the same three retainer rivets. A lever-action clamp firmly holds the top half of the fixture. Both the rings and the balls are suspended. The outer ring is free to be moved around so the amount of horizontal shift of the balls in the retainer is displayed on a Dial Indicator.
Automatic Gages 23 AUTOMATIC GAGES DIAMETER 133M-358 Model 133M-358 is a post-process, automatic sorting gage that inspects and classifies inner ring bores. Having a speed capability of approximately 900 rings per hour, this gage is used in conjunction with an internal grinder, sorting the rings into "Good", "Over" and "Under" categories. The gaging cycle starts with the release of a ring from the grinder and ends when the ring rolls through the disposal chute into its proper category. In the gaging station, bores are checked In two positions (front and back) by a retractable air plug. By means of both interchangeable and adjustable tooling, a wide range of bore sizes can be gaged. The gage is equipped with automatic counters for presetting a reject level (the maximum permissible number of rejects in a group of rings). A light signals the operator whenever this level is exceeded so that he can stop the grinder and make the necessary corrections. This same signal can also be used to stop the grinder automatically. 144B-244 Model 144B-244 is similar to the gage above (133M-358) except that It checks the O. D. of outer rings at a rate of approximately 1200 per hour. This gage also uses interchangeable tooling in the gaging station to accommodate various ring sizes. 144B-257 Model 144B-257 is a fully automatic sorting gage for checking inner ring bores at a rate of 1200 rings per hour. The gaging station is completely enclosed in the gage cabinet to prevent contamination. A window in the top of the cabinet permits the operator to monitor the gaging cycle. The rings can be either hopper or hand fed into the gaging station. During gaging, a ring is held by its faces and a centralizing arbor centers the part in the station. As the arbor retracts, an air plug enters from the opposite end of the bore to gage the part. Then,
24 Automatic Gages the air plug retracts, releasing the ring into the disposal chute. Disposal is into two categories: "Good" and "Reject". Designed for extreme ease of set-up and operation, this gage uses interchangeable rather than adjustable tooling to accommodate different bore sizes. 144B-196 Model 144B-196 simultaneously checks both the bore and O. D. of assembled bearings at a rate of 1,200 per hour. This gage is very similar in appearance to the gage above (144B-257), but has two meters on the control panel. Operation and tooling are also similar except that an air ring gages the O. D. in addition to the air plug which checks the bore. Similar gage designs are available with provisions for rotating the workpiece while it is in the gaging station.
