The wrker decided t place large sheets f plywd ver the penings. While placing a panel f plywd they failed t ntice that ne edge f the panel was just barely supprted at the side f the pening. Later, the wrker stepped n the edge f the panel. The panel slipped, tilted and drpped many feet belw t their death. One way t prevent this type f accident is t tack-nail each panel with a few nails t secure it prperly in place, as it is placed. In this case tw r three pennies wrth f nails wuld have saved that persn s life. But, was it nly the lack f a few cents wrth f nails? Abslutely nt! It was nt nly the lack f a few nails, but mre imprtant it was the lack f safety sense r a lack f simple knw hw that killed that persn. In almst every jb there are pssibilities f injuries-even death. It is imprtant t questin everything while wrking. Size up each jb, each machine, each tl used, and apply the best safety sense t everything dne. Develp the habit f seeking and learning simple knw-hw that might save a life r limb. Always ask, Can I get hurt if I d the jb this way? - 3 -

4 Asphalt Tlbx Talks Guidelines fr Safety Training Meetings The fremen r supervisr is respnsible fr preparing and cnducting Safety Training Meetings fr emplyees n a weekly basis. These meetings are an essential element f the Prject s Safety and Health Training Prgram. It is a prven fact that prjects, which cnduct gd meetings, attain better safety recrds than thse that have pr, r n safety meetings. In rder t assist in the preparatin f the material, and in the presentatin a safety training meeting, the fllwing guidelines are prvided: Preparing fr the Meeting Select the tpic fr the meeting several days in advance t becme familiar with the subject t be discussed. Present the talk in a cnvincing manner withut reading it. Schedule the meeting at the same time every week, if pssible, and hld it right in the wrk area. These meetings are generally 5 t 15 minutes in length s seating is nt imprtant. Hwever, make sure everyne can easily see and hear. A gd time t hld the meeting is just after a shift begins r immediately fllwing the lunch breaks. Just prir t the meeting, gather all the material and/r equipment needed. When pssible, use the actual demnstratins t illustrate pints. Fr example, when talking abut fire extinguishers, have ne t shw what it lks like, and hw it is used. Have a mushrmed tl head r a brken hammer handle t shw hw they can cause accidents. If necessary, get assistance frm smene. The entire crew, if pssible, shuld be present befre the meeting is started. Cnducting the Meeting Start the meeting n time. Lss f interest can ccur if there are unnecessary delays. Make the meeting shrt and t the pint. Review safety vilatins nted during the past week. Discuss: the nature f the vilatin, the danger invlved and ffers cnstructive criticism withut naming anyne in particular. Review the wrk planned fr the week ahead. Discuss: hazards t avid r cntrl, safety equipment t be used, and safe prcedures t be fllwed. Recrd Keeping Requirements. Make a cpy f the attendance sheet fund at the beginning f this manual fr use at each meeting. Have each emplyee sign the attendance sheet the cnclusin f the meeting and the supervisr cnducting the meeting must sign it. A cpy f the Attendance Sheet must be frwarded t the Safety s Manager s ffice. Make certain it is dated and the crafts attending and the meeting lcatin are listed. Subjects discussed must be cvered in detail. General Safety is nt specific enugh.
