1 Volume 2, Issue 4 June/July 2005 The Northern Light A monthly update to keep our valued volunteers of the Canadian Red Cross and partners informed on what s new in the Northern District of Nova Scotia, serving the counties of Colchester, Cumberland, Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough! If you have any articles or news you would like us to include contact us at (902) , or fax (902) Deadline is the last Monday of every month : ). Pictou County REMO A R E Y O U P R E P A R E D F O R T H E N E X T D I S A S T E R? The Pictou County REMO planning Committee met on May 5th at which time we participated in a table top exercise. The following agencies were in attendance: Department of Community Services, Department of Environment, Department of Health, Department of Transportation and Public Works, Chignecto-Central Regional School Board, Fire Services, Police Services, Pictou County Health Authority, Emergency Health Services and the Canadian Red Cross. The table top exercise simulated a three day scenario beginning with a major storm with high winds, followed by a bus accident, and wide spread power outages. During the exercise, each agency gave their input into what each individual agencies role would be. The was a great and realistic exercise and helped each agency to understand what the other brought to the table. The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. 6 Water Safety Week is a national, annual Red Cross campaign designed to educate Canadians about safe behaviour in, on, and around water. Water Safety Week 2005 is June The Canadian Red Cross proudly launches its new Red Cross Swim program during Water Safety Week. The new Red Cross Swim program focuses on both swimming skills AND water safety - with a greater emphasis on personal fitness. Have a Healthy Safe Summer when out on the water by taking three important steps: Be safe in, on and around the water by getting trained, always supervising children around water, and wearing your lifejacket when boating; Wear adequate sun protection; sunscreen, a hat and protective clothing will help keep you safe from sunstroke; Make good food choices when packing your cooler, pack healthy snacks and plenty of water to beat the heat. Learning to swim is important, but learning water safety is key to knowing what to do in an emergency in or on the water. The new Red Cross Swim program begins teaching these skills at the Preschool level so children can learn these lessons even at an early age. The Canadian Red Cross trains more than 1 million children each year keeping them safer in and around the water. The new Red Cross Swim program continues the 60-year legacy of Canadian Red Cross water safety and swimming lessons. Each year, an average of 400 Canadians drown. Boating is the activity that leads to the greatest number of drownings in Canada about 200 people die while boating each year. In response to boating drownings, Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the Office of Safe Boating, has developed a TV campaign about using lifejackets properly. Every Use But highlights the many way s lifejackets are used improperly, and the one way they really need to be used: worn when on or around the water to save your life. The companion radio spot Theory reinforces the lifejacket message. Male boaters between the ages of 15 and 35 drown most frequently. In 1946, when Red Cross began Water Safety training programs, 8 of every 100,000 Canadians were victims of drowning. Since then, Red Cross has trained more than 27 million Canadians to swim and safely enjoy water activities. Today, drowning claims the lives of 1.4 Canadians of every 100,000.
