If you are not familiar with this reading program, here is the scoop: One hundred paperback copies of our RIF book will be placed randomly around school. Last week, Mrs. Alidon met with the reading classes to launch the program and has given away copies for each class. The remaining copies will be dropped or placed in various spots on campus this week. They may be in the cafeteria, hallway, office, and even some classrooms. You never know where a RIF book may appear. If students find a RIF book, they can pick it up, give it a read, and forward it to the next person to enjoy! Not your thing? Then simply find someone to pass the book to who will enjoy reading it. These are not library books, so please do not return them to the library! After students finish reading the book, they can sign the inside front cover, forward it on the next person to read the story, and come to the library to sign an I read the RIF book emblem. The library staff will add their name to a roster of students who will have the opportunity to meet the author, who will be visiting our school on Friday, May 1, in the library. This is an incredible opportunity for our students! Please note that students do not have to read a copy of the RIF book that they find around the school. If some students can t find a copy lying around campus, they can check out a copy from our school library or at the public library. Our school library collection currently has two hardback copies available for student checkout. The Testing is the first book in the series; Independent Study is the second book, and Graduation Day is the final book in the series. The MMJH PTA and Katy ISD Board Member Joe Adams have graciously donated one set of this series to our school library for our students to enjoy. Thank you for your generous donation! 2 Page 2 Red River BBQ Spirit Night The McMeans JH Spirit Night at Red River BBQ will be held on Tuesday, February 10, from 5:30-8:30 pm (changed from Feb. 3). Red River BBQ, located at 1711 South Mason Rd., will donate 15% of proceeds to MMJH for orders placed this day. Please support MMJH and show RED RIVER BBQ we have BOBCAT PRIDE! Thank you so much for your continued support! MMJH Track Tryouts Girls track starts on Wednesday, February 18. Students must have a physical and all paper work on file by Friday, February 13. Please go by and visit with Coach Szurek in the girls coach s office if you are interested in running track this year. Boys track practice begins on Tuesday, February 24. The parents meeting will be held on this date at 4:30 pm in the competition gym. Please contact Coach Martin if you have any questions. MMJH Tennis Tryouts Tennis season is coming up soon! If you are interested in trying out for the tennis team this year, please see Coach Lannom or Coach Torres in the science hall to sign up. Boys will have tryouts on Monday and Tuesday, February 23-24, and girls will have tryouts on Wednesday and Thursday, February Students must be in 7th or 8th grade to tryout and ALL participating students must have a completed athletic packet filled out and on file prior to tryouts. Instructions for filling out the paperwork can be seen below: Athletics Physical Packet (online paperwork) Instructions Go to the Katy ISD Athletics page for Participation forms: Click the Participation Forms tab on the right hand side of the page. This will take you to Print: Physical and Medical History Form (2 pages) from the Physical/Medical History Forms tab and take them to your doctor. After filling out the 2 forms and your doctor performs/signs the medical evaluation form, please turn both forms into an MMJH tennis coach. Fill out the following Electronic Participation Forms online as soon as possible. The required online forms must be filled out ONLINE before an athlete can try out for any sport. 5 Page 5 Junior Achievement Hey all you Bobcat Parents, there is a fun volunteer opportunity coming your way in May. By then we ll all be ready for some fun! On Wednesday, May 6, we will have our annual Day With Junior Achievement (JA). This is a valuable program for sixth grade students where they learn about economics and business from parents, community leaders, and business partners. If you don t have a 6th grader at our school, no worries. You can still volunteer. We usually even have some local business folk who come in for the day to help out. If you could donate a day of your time, we would love to have you come in and present a lesson. Here is how it works: Volunteers come in and stay in one classroom all day long. As the students rotate through classes, they receive a different lesson during each core (reading, English, math, science, social studies) class. Lunch is provided. All lessons are prepared and pre-packaged in advance, and they can be sent to you so that you can familiarize yourself with the curriculum. The teacher will be with you the entire time. If you would like to volunteer for this day, please contact me, Lee Anne Butts leebutts@katyisd.org. I will do my best to place you in the classroom of your choice. Please consider donating a day in May for JA. The program cannot function without our parent volunteers! We appreciate your time in making Junior Achievement a success at our school. Student ipad Checkout Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for learning. A student can check out an ipad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, excluding the Winter and Spring Breaks. The student s parent or legal guardian must first meet with Ms. Thomas, the 8th grade assistant principal, to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and sign it along with the student. This document will be kept on file for the current school year. The student will be instructed on proper use and care of the borrowed equipment. Please call the school at to set up an appointment.
