1 Introduction This document describes new features, known issues, and limitations in Genetec Omnicast Media Gateway version 4.6. It also describes how to install and configure Omnicast Media Gateway. 2 About Omnicast Media Gateway The Media Gateway is a stand-alone application that emulates video capture devices from Omnicast managed video encoders. It allows third party applications that use video devices (such as Windows Media Encoder) to process, display, or broadcast live video managed by Omnicast. The Media Gateway connects to an Omnicast Directory and receives video from encoders on the Omnicast system. Once a video connection is established between the encoder and the Media Gateway, the video stream is transferred to a device driver that emulates a video capture device. Genetec Omnicast Media Gateway includes two components: Media Gateway Manager The configuration interface that lets you select the video encoders to expose to the third party media software and create the video capture devices. Media Gateway Service The Windows service that sends the simulated video capture devices from selected Omnicast managed video encoders. IMPORTANT Media Gateway Manager and Media Gateway Service cannot run simultaneously. When you start the Media Gateway Manager, the Media Gateway Service will stop. The Media Gateway Service resumes automatically when you exit the Media Gateway Manager. EN V4.7.B(2) 4
3 System Requirements 3.1 Hardware requirements The minimum requirements for a computer dedicated to running the Media Gateway, feeding five video capture devices are as follows: 2x Dual Core Intel Xeon 5160, 3.00 GHz, 4 MB Cache, 1333 MHz FSB 4 GB of RAM 80 GB hard drive for OS and Omnicast applications Additional hard drive(s) for video storage Standard SVGA video card 800 x 600 or higher screen resolution 10/100/1000 Ethernet Network Interface Card DVD ROM drive The above configuration was tested with Windows Media Encoder running on the same machine, streaming all five videos at 256 Kbps at 15 fps, with an image size of 320 x 240. Different settings may affect the performance of the system. 3.2 Software requirements The software requirements are as follows: Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Microsoft DirectX 9.0c or more later. To check the version of DirectX installed on your machine, run the Windows command dxdiag. Omnicast version independent SDK runtime (compatible to Omnicast Server) 3.3 Omnicast license The Media Gateway license should contain the number of video encoders equal to the number of video encoders configured in the Media Gateway Manager. EN V4.7.B(2) 5
4 Installing Omnicast Media Gateway 4.1 Before You Install Before installing the Media Gateway, make sure of the following: The operating system is compatible with Omnicast Media Gateway. Media Gateway does not work on 64-bit systems; it only works on 32-bit WinXP systems and 32-bit Vista systems. The version of Omnicast SDK that is compatible with your Omnicast Server is installed first. Do not install the Media Gateway on a machine that is running an Omnicast server. For more information, see limitation on page Installing Media Gateway To install Media Gateway: 1. Double-click on the Media Gateway setup program to start the installation. 2. The InstallShield Wizard will prepare the installation. When you reach the Welcome screen, click Next. 3. Select the installation folder and click Next. 4. When the installation is complete, click on Finish. 4.3 Logging on to the Media Gateway Manager Important After the initial log on, before you log on to the Media Gateway you must close all third party applications that are using the video capture devices created by the Media Gateway (such as Windows Media Encoder). Once the third party applications are closed, you can launch the Media Gateway Manager. Failing to do so may cause duplicate video capture devices to be created, and could have other negative effects. To log on to the Media Gateway Manager: 1. The Media Gateway Manager is password protected. The default password is admin. Enter the password and click on Log in or type Enter. The first time you start Media Gateway, the Media Gateway Manager will need to install a default video capture device used to display video preview in the Media Gateway Manager. 2. When the information message appears, click OK. For information on how to create video capture devices, see Configuring the Media Gateway on page 9. EN V4.7.B(2) 6
4.4 Changing the interface language You have the option to run the Media Gateway Manager in either English (default) or French. To change the interface language: 1. Log on to the Media Gateway Manager as Administrator. 2. From the Preferred language list, select the language and exit the application. The new language will be in effect the next time you start the Media Gateway Manager. EN V4.7.B(2) 7
4.5 Protecting the Media Gateway configuration For security reasons, we recommend that you change the Media Gateway Manager s password immediately after installation. To change the Media gateway password: 1. Log on to Media Gateway, and under password, click Change. 2. If the machine hosting the Media Gateway is in a secure area, you can disable the password verification by clearing the Enforce identification on startup check box. The next time you start the application, you will not be asked for a password. You may change the Password or Language settings anytime later on by selecting Media Gateway in the left pane of the application window and clicking Change. Clicking on Reset will restore the default password. EN V4.7.B(2) 8
5 Configuring the Media Gateway 5.1 Selecting video encoders In order to select video encoders, the Media Gateway Manager must be connected to the Omnicast system they belong to. To establish a connection with an Omnicast directory: 1. In the left pane of the application window, select Media Gateway and click on the button. 2. Enter the username, password and directory name you wish to connect to and click OK. You may add more than one directory to the Media Gateway. Once the connection is established, all video encoders on the specified directory which are available to the selected user will appear in the right pane of the application window. EN V4.7.B(2) 9
3. Select the encoders you wish to broadcast from the encoder tree in the right pane. The broadcasted encoders will appear under the corresponding directory name in the left pane. 4. You may change the password used to connect to a directory at any time by selecting the corresponding directory in the left pane and clicking on the button. Exit the application when you have finished. 5.2 Creating video capture devices When you exit the Media Gateway Manager, a video capture device is automatically created for every video encoder you have added to the Gateway configuration Disabling the Driver Signing message Depending on your Windows Driver Signing option, you may get the following warning message for every new device you create. EN V4.7.B(2) 10
Click on Continue Anyway. Tip If you have many devices to create, you may want to temporarily disable this security warning. To do so, go to your machine s desktop, right click on My Computer, select Properties, then Hardware, and click on Driver Signing. In the Drivers Signing Options dialog box, select Ignore Install the software anyway and don t ask for my approval, and click OK. Once all the video capture devices are created, the Media Gateway Service will be started. EN V4.7.B(2) 11
5.3 Viewing video streams from video capture devices The newly created video devices should be visible from Windows Device Manager. To invoke this program, click on Start >Settings > Control Panel > Computer Management >Device Manager. The new video devices should be listed under the group Sound, video and game controllers. The device names should follow the video encoder names unless you decide to change them (more on this in the next section). The device called Omnicast Media Gateway Preview is the default device created at the Media Gateway installation. If an application attempts to view the video on a video capture device and the Omnicast Media Gateway Service is not started, the device will output color bars to indicate that no video feed is received. See illustration below. EN V4.7.B(2) 12
5.4 Customizing the video capture devices The Media Gateway Manager offers you the option to change the name and to customize the on screen information display. To customize a video device: 1. Log on to the Media Gateway Manager and select the corresponding video encoder from the left pane. 2. Enter the following: Device name Type the name you want to give to the video capture device. The new name will be applied when you exit the application. Display options You can select different messages to display on screen depending on whether the video encoder is online or offline. When the encoder is online, you have the option to display nothing, the encoder name, or a custom message. When the encoder is offline, you can choose to display a blank screen or the last available image. If you do not specify a custom message, a default message The camera <encoder name> is not running in the current Directory will be displayed. Select the Show timestamp check box to display the current date and time at the lower right corner of the video. The date and time display formats follow Windows regional settings. EN V4.7.B(2) 13
3. After you have made your changes, click Apply to see your changes in the preview window. You can turn the video preview off by selecting View and Display video preview from the application menu. EN V4.7.B(2) 14
