Parent Resources Read on to find ideas, websites and books to help your child become a SUPER reader and writer! There are specific ideas for troubleshooting reading problems with motivation, fluency, word recognition, and comprehension. There are also prompts and ideas to improve and encourage writing. Motivation Does your reader need a little motivation boost? Try some of these ideas: Read to your child every day. Pick books that are of a high interest to your child. Build on positive reading experiences by taking a trip to explore something your child has been reading about. Use a variety of voices and stop to laugh or discuss sections of the book. Be a ham! Be encouraging and patient. Let your child read at his/her own pace. Pick a quiet, comfortable spot. Snuggle up and enjoy the time together. Keep some books in the car or in a bag for reading while waiting for appointments. Visit the library. Read on your own to model that reading is important. Reread favorite books over and over again! Leave books, magazines, and colorful catalogs in conspicuous places around your home. Present reading as an activity with a purpose; a way to gather useful information for planning a family trip, deciding which toy to buy, or making a model car. Have older siblings read to younger children. Discuss things you ve read with your child.

Give books as gifts. Read jokes and comics. Encourage your child to read menus, directions, and food labels to make choices on his/her own. Websites Use humor to motivate your child to read. This site offers topics for wacky web tales. Your child picks the topic, fills words for various parts of speech and the computer uses the choices to create a silly story. This is an excellent resource of links to help your child become a lifelong reader and learner. Reading Rockets has links to answer specific questions about your young reader. An excellent parent resource. Books The Between the Lions Book for Parents, by Linda Rath, 2004 This highly rated book explains the steps to literacy for children K-3 and gives parents useful information and ideas.

Fluency Fluency is not only how quickly material is read, but also proper phrasing, attending to punctuation, and using appropriate expression. To improve fluency: Practice reading books that are on an easier level. Read along with your child to model correct phrasing and speed. Have your child read to a younger sibling. Reread books. Rereading familiar books is an important step in building fluency. Play games that involve reading. Reading more and for fun helps to build a large sight vocabulary and quick recall for better fluency. Borrow or purchase some books on tape. Taped books are excellent examples of proper fluency. Websites You must register for a username and password. The site provides an interactive read aloud opportunity for your child. The text changes colors as the book is read. This site has hundreds of books to read on-line. Books are available to read in 9 different languages! You can read colorful, free books on-line. Some books include sound effects. Reading is Fundamental created a safe website for children to read, play games, track reading, and win prizes.

Word Recognition and Word Attack Skills Recognizing words and decoding words quickly are important to build fluency and to understand the text. To help your child recognize sight words with ease try these ideas: Sing or cheer words. For example, 3 or 6 letter words can be sung to the tune of 3 Blind Mice. Cheer they by chanting, they, t-he-y, they. Use the sense of touch by writing words in shaving cream, chalk, chocolate syrup, cereal, Playdough, or glue. Practice using flashcards. Play Memory by flipping flashcards upside down. Whoever finds a pair and reads the word correctly, keeps the card. Say the word 3 times and write, trace, or spell it out loud. Read daily. To help your child improve word attack skills: Read rhyming books to help your child recognize spelling patterns. Help your child separate sounds in words in sequence. Cat has three sounds /k/, /a/, /t/. Children need to hear the different sounds before they can learn to decode words. Play word games like Scrabble, or How many words can you rhyme with.? Point out words missed while reading and help your child look for small words in the word and familiar letter patterns to help read the word. When the word is read correctly, the child should read the entire sentence again to see if the word makes sense. Books Word Play: Fun Games for Building Reading and Writing Skills in Children with Learning Differences, by Lori Goodman & Lora Myers, 2000.

Websites Leveled practice with sounds, words, and read stories. Fun! A fun game to build words based on popular children s books. This site is for the child (or adult) looking for a challenge. There are dozens of games to boost brain power and play with words. Everything from flashcards to on-line phonics games. On-line, fun games to help with letter sounds and phonics skills. Free e-books, games associated with popular children s books, and a wide variety of links for parents.

Comprehension Comprehension is understanding what was read. Students are taught a variety of strategies to help them understand reading passages. To help your child comprehend: Have your child retell, in their own words, what they ve read after a paragraph. Gradually build to retelling after a page or a chapter. Share stories you ve read with your child through discussion and retelling. Modeling is a wonderful method for teaching. Discuss daily events and encourage word games to help build vocabulary. A large vocabulary helps promote understanding. Predicting what may happen next helps a child set the stage for future reading. The child reads to see if the prediction was correct or needs to be modified. Visualizing what has been read helps the child create a movie in their mind. Point out excerpts of a book or poem that helped you picture exactly what was happening in the story. Ask a question about a page before your child reads it to cue your child into the text. Make a game out of this by allowing your child to ask you a question next. Website Choose from 7,000 titles. Children take a multiple choice quiz after reading to earn points and prizes. Links to reteaching and practice inferring. This site is from New York State. Click on the grade level and then comprehension strategies for a variety of on-line activities to practice comprehension skills.

This short article gives 7 tips to improve comprehension. Short passages and multiple choice questions in a game format to test your comprehension. A collection of 139 links for reading practice.

Writing To motivate a reluctant writer try: Keeping an organized and comfortable place for writing available materials and proper writing. Give your child thinking time before he or she writes. Doodling or notes are excellent ways to organize thoughts. Praise your child and give constructive feedback. Encourage your child to write to relatives. Suggest taking notes or keeping a diary about trips or outings. Encourage your child to journal about his or her feelings and things he enjoys or things that are disappointing. This is a good outlet for venting frustrations. Use crossword puzzles and word search games to improve vocabulary and spelling. Write when your child can see you. Modeling that writing is a daily event shows your child that writing is an important skill. Encourage copying words to songs, poems, or parts of books that your child enjoys. Suggest your child makes lists of things needed or wanted at the store or things he or she wants to do in the future. Provide materials for your child to publish his or her writing. You could build your own library. Dialogue journal with your child. You write a sentence or question, pass the paper and your child responds. Continue until the conversation has ended. Websites Hundreds of creative ideas to get your child s imagination flowing. Also, a link to see what Mr. Van Patter did when he visited Marlborough.

Dozens of word games that reinforce alphabet knowledge and spelling skills. Also, write your own story and add sound effects to bring it to life! This site contains a huge selection of writing prompts that are created by clicking on buttons for characters, plots, settings, etc. Also, poetry prompts and tips to improve writing. This site is a story writing guide for parents and children. Advice is given to make a great story. The child writes and edits the story. The completed story may be published on-line. Read other published stories. Books Making Books That Fly, Fold, Wrap, Hide, Pop Up, Twist, and Turn by Gwen Diehn, 1998 A Book of One s Own: Develo;ping Literacy Through Making Books by Paul Johnson, 1998 Prompts to get your child writing The best day of my life was If I found a giant egg My favorite game If I had a pet dragon I love to play My Family My Room The funniest thing happened Top 10 Things I Love Most I really hated it when
