2 INTRODUCTION This history/literature study guide is created to use in three week sessions. Each unit contains a historical story, a daily journal question and one other daily activity. These activities are: Bible Verse Activities Vocabulary Skills Interpretation Skills Sequencing Poetry Skills Drawing Craft Activity Map Skills Comprehension Skills Cause and Effect Skills Encyclopedia Skills Creative Writing Science Activity Report Writing We suggest the student read the story in it s completion before beginning the study guide. One skill area a day will allow the unit to be completed in three weeks. Your children can learn History and Literature skills at the same time. Look ahead, because you may need to collect some items for the Science or Art projects.

3 SQUANTO Home at last, Squanto thought to himself as he walked through the woods after a day of hunting. This turkey will help feed my friends in Plymouth. Squanto had been living with the Pilgrims at Plymouth for almost a year now. He was considered one of the most important members of the community. Although it wasn t his Indian home, Squanto loved Plymouth and the Pilgrims. Squanto had come to live with them in 1620 when they first began their settlement. Squanto felt comfortable with the Pilgrims. Ten years earlier, as a young boy, Squanto had met some white men. They asked him to come to England with them. Squanto went with them, ready for adventure. He traveled to England. He learned to speak and dress like the white men. After long years in England, Squanto wanted to go home. He tried to return to America with Captain John Smith; the man who s life had been saved by Pocahontas. Unfortunately, Squanto was captured when he had just reached the shores of New England and was taken back across the ocean to be sold as a slave.

4 Squanto escaped again and finally sailed to England. From there he found passage with an English Sea Captain to the New World. Once he returned he found that his tribe and family were all gone. They had died of sickness or a plague. Squanto met some neighboring Indians. They were called the Samoset. He stayed with them until he found the Plymouth settlement. As soon as possible though, he moved into the white man s settlement. I could not live with the other Indians, Squanto told his friends in Plymouth. I have lived with the white men too long. The Indian ways seem strange to me. We are glad you have come to live with us, the Pilgrims, like Captain Miles Standish, told him. They knew that without Squanto, they would never have learned to plant corn, pumpkins and squash. He taught them how to get maple syrup out of a tree. He taught them how to fertilize their fields by planting a fish with their seeds. Squanto helped the Pilgrims to become friends with the Samoset Indian tribe. The tribe and Captain William Bradford, the man who was the leader of Plymouth, Massachusetts, made a treaty of peace that remained unbroken for over forty years. Squanto was the interpreter for them.

5 Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to hunt without making noise. This way they didn t scare away the deer and other animals that could be used for meat. The Pilgrims didn t know how to catch fish with nets. He showed them how to make and use these nets. Squanto taught the girls to gather berries and nuts. He even gave the woman cooking lessons. The woman had to learn new ways to prepare food to serve and store away for winter. With his help, the Pilgrims survived the cold winter. They decided to have a feast to give thanks to God. They invited their Indian friends. Everyone brought some kind of food. The feast lasted three days. This feast was held outdoors because no houses were big enough for all the people. Today we still celebrate Thanksgiving. We prepare special meals and eat, eat, eat, as the Pilgrims did. But are we as thankful for our lives as the Pilgrims were? At the Pilgrims feast there must have been many praises lifted to God for sending Squanto to live with them. If Squanto had not come to live with the Pilgrims, they would have probably all died. Squanto only lived another year after that. While guiding William Bradford around Cape Cod he became ill and died. Everyone in Plymouth was sad when this happened. Few men ever change the whole course of history. Squanto is a man upon whom much of American History has been built.

If you had been at Plymouth, what would you have liked to have seen and why? 3. Do you think you would have liked to have been an Indian or a Pilgrim and why? 4. If you were Squanto, would you have stayed in England all your life or tried to go home? 5. Do you see yourself as an adventurer and why? 6. Tell about a time when you were away from your family for a while. 7. Do you believe that it is important to give Thanksgiving to God? 8. Would you rather travel on the ocean or the land and why? 9. Have you ever been in a situation where you had to help two people become friends? Tell about it. 10. If you had been one of the first people to reach Plymouth, how would you have felt about the Indians and why? 11. What is the longest trip you have ever taken? 12. What do you think made Squanto keep trying to get back home? 13. Why do you think the Pilgrims came to Plymouth? 14. What do you think was the most important thing about Squanto? 15. Why was it so important that the Pilgrims make friends with the Indians?

7 Bible Verse Activity It was sad that Squanto lost all his family and tribe. Sometimes the bad things in our lives turn out to be for the good plan of God. Squanto learned to persevere through all his trials. Therefore, he saved the lives of many Pilgrims. Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.
