1 3000 Crescent Road West, Portage la Prairie, MB February PRINCIPAL S February 3 rd was the division wide Kindergarten Registration Day! If you know of parents in our catchment area who have a child who will be 5 years old by Dec 31, 2016 and missed the registration day, please ask them to call our school to set up a time to register their child. Student-led parent/teacher conferences will be held on Thursday evening, Feb 18 from 5:00-7:30 pm and Friday, Feb 19 from 9:30 am 12:30 pm. We remind parents that they can discuss their child s progress at length with the teacher(s) at any time by contacting the school and setting up an appointment. Also, the Book Fair will be running in the library during that week starting Feb 16 until Feb 19 at noon, so take a few moments to peruse the newest titles during the student led conferences. Our Grade 7 & 8 French classes will be off to St. Boniface on Thursday, Feb 17 th to attend the Festival du Voyageur. What a great opportunity for our students to attend a fun cultural event. Thank you Mrs. Sloik for organizing this day and I hope the weather cooperates. February is I Love to Read month and we will have a number of activities taking place in our classrooms and library to celebrate the joy of reading. Our events will kick off on Friday, Feb 22 nd with the theme of Splish, Splash It s a Reading Bash!. We have a number of guest readers coming to our school throughout the month and students are very much looking forward to the week s special activities. If you would like to read to our students please contact their teacher and let them know when you are available. Every day we love to read but what a great way to put extra fun and excitement into our Literacy Programs with this celebration. If you have any books at home that you would like to donate for our students to read please send them and we will make a book exchange for the Early Years students in the greenhouse and for our Middle Years students in the library. Students may pick up and drop off books in these locations with any remaining books being donated to the local Women s Shelter. Let s join together and celebrate at home as well. 2 Middle Years teachers will once again be assessing students in Grade 7 on Math and Student Engagement while our Grade 8 teachers will be assessing students English Language Art skills in the areas of reading comprehension and expository writing. Students can not study for these assessments. The results are based on previous work and performance skills. Parents will be informed of their student s results once the assessments are completed and the final results have been reported and compiled by Manitoba Education. On Friday, March 17 th our Middle Years students will be able to enjoy a supervised school activity of skiing or snow tubing. Space will be limited and will be assigned by first paid first to attend and by grade level. Additional information will be coming home to outline the costs and procedures for these events. The month of March will be an exciting time for all students as they get ready for the Spring Break which runs from March 28 th to April 1 st. Students last day will actually be Thursday, March 24 th as Good Friday falls on March 25 th and the schools are closed that day. Milk and Spirit Week activities will be happening prior to the break and planning is already taking place. After Spring Break our Grade 8 students will be going to PCI for an orientation and a tour of the campus. There will be a parent information night as well. We will keep parents informed as to the date as soon as we get a time from PCI. Finally, to all the parents and families of Yellowquill School who continue to promote and advocate for our school your school I send out a huge Valentine filled with respect and admiration. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Parent Advisory Council Next meeting date is March 21 at 7:00 PM in the library. Student Council The 9 th annual YQS Dodgeball Tournament is underway with 96 students from grades 6-8 participating. Once this is completed the grade fives will have their own tournament during the noon hour. Plans are underway for the YQS dance which will take place on Thursday, March 17 from 7:00-10:00 p.m. The cost is $5.00 with Bulldog providing the music. Our Spirit Week this year is from March Each day will have a dress up theme and a noon hour fun activity. Details will be available in the next newsletter. Page 2 February 2016

3 Dear Parents and Families, The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event. We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children s books. Your support of this vital literary event is a key part of helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms. You ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Visit the Scholastic Book Fairs website at to get more detailed information about these books. You can also watch book trailers and author videos with your child on the BookTube page. Look for the upcoming Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair. The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit during our Family Event. You could win $50 in books $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child s classroom! 4 Splish, Splash It s a Reading Bash! I Love to Read Week February 22 nd 26th Today a reader, tomorrow a leader! Yellowquill School is excited to once again participate in I Love to Read Week and will host the following activities: Monday -Kick off assembly in the morning Bring a book to the Beach with your hat and sunglasses. -Book exchange will be set up in the green house area. Tuesday -Wear something you can read day. Wednesday -Teacher reading 11:30 teachers will move to another classroom and read with students. -Storybook character dress-up day. Thursday -Buddy reader 11:30. -Author visit in the afternoon. Friday -Mini assembly with a Beach Bash to follow. -Beach day dress up. Students will also DROP EVERYTHING AND READ when Splish, Splash, It s a Reading Bash is announced during the day. Students can wear their sunhats and sunglasses during this time. Mr. Harkness is also arranging surprise guest speakers to read to selected classrooms. Each classroom will track how many books they read on a beach bash poster and present their poster at the mini assembly that Friday. Each classroom will also choose a student to talk about the book the class chose for the classroom from the book fair. The more you read the more things you know.
