59 Selection Review #1 Chapters 1 and 2 1. Describe the situation between the Socs and the greasers. The situation between the Socs and the greasers is a tense one in which members of the two groups regularly jump each other. As the story opens, Ponyboy is walking home alone from the movies and is attacked by a group of Soc boys looking for trouble. A few weeks earlier, his friend Johnny, also a greaser, was badly beaten up by the same boys. Socs and greasers don t associate with each other on friendly terms. 2. Tell about Ponyboy s relationship with each of his brothers. Ponyboy has a good relationship with his brother, Sodapop. Even though they are not similar, they spend a lot of time together and obviously care about each other. However, Ponyboy feels that his oldest brother, Darry, treats him like a child. Ponyboy thinks Darry is never satisfied with his efforts, no matter how hard he works. 3. What does the interaction between Ponyboy and Cherry show about them? Ponyboy and Cherry enjoy each other s company and talk freely, in spite of the rivalry between the greasers and the Socs. They almost forget their difference in social status for a short while. Ponyboy is aware of other people staring at them, however, and is quickly reminded of how other people view greasers. 4. Why don t Ponyboy and Johnny join Dally in insulting Cherry and Marcia? Ponyboy and Johnny think Cherry and Marcia are respectable girls and that Dally s comments are embarrassing Ponyboy thinks Cherry and Marcia deserve better treatment than greaser girls. He admits that if the girls were greasers, he would probably have helped Dally insult them.

60 Selection Review #2 Chapters 3 and 4 1. What happens after the movie is over? Why do Cherry and Marcia go home with their boyfriends, even though they are angry with them? Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-bit are walking with the girls to Two-bit s house so that he can drive them home. As they are walking, Randy and Bob, the girls boyfriends, drive up with some of their friends.they insult the greasers and hint that they will start a fight unless the girls get in the car with them. Cherry does not want anyone to get hurt, so the girls get in the car to avoid trouble. 2. Describe Ponyboy s reaction when Cherry asks him about his oldest brother, Darry. Why does Ponyboy react this way? At first Ponyboy gives a brief description of Darry. When Cherry asks more questions, Ponyboy becomes upset and bitter. He says Darry is cold and unfeeling. He claims that Darry can t stand him and would like to place him in a home somewhere. Ponyboy reacts this way because he believes that Darry does not like him and that he is tired of trying to take care of him. He feels this way because Darry is strict with him and often speaks sharply to him. 3. Why does Ponyboy arrive home late? What happens when he gets home? Ponyboy arrives home late because he and Johnny both fall asleep in the parking lot. When he gets home, Darry shouts at him. When Darry speaks sharply to Sodapop as well, Ponyboy reacts angrily and Darry hits him. Ponyboy leaves the house and decides to find Johnny and run away from home. 4. What happens to Ponyboy and Johnny in the park? Ponyboy and Johnny see Bob s blue Mustang circling the park. When the Socs get out of the car, it is clear they are drunk, and they begin insulting Ponyboy and Johnny. They grab Ponyboy, shove his head into the fountain, and hold it there, as if they are going to drown him. Johnny stabs Bob to get the Socs to release Ponyboy and go away and leave them alone. Bob dies from the stab wound. 5. Why is it unexpected that Johnny becomes a murderer? How do he and Ponyboy plan to avoid being arrested? We do not expect Johnny to become a murderer because he is the quietest and most fearful of Ponyboy s friends. He has never been a tough guy and does not even enjoy fighting. We would expect a more aggressive person, someone like Dally, to commit murder. When Johnny realizes the trouble he is in, his first thought is to ask Dally what to do. Dally gives the boys clothes, a gun, and some money. He tells them about an old church where they can hide out in the countryside.

61 Selection Review #3 Chapters 5 and 6 1. How do Ponyboy and Johnny change their appearance? How do they feel about doing this? Ponyboy and Johnny both cut their hair and wash the grease out, and Ponyboy bleaches his. They are unhappy about doing this, especially Ponyboy. His long, tuff hair has been an important part of his identity as a greaser. 2. Why does Johnny decide that he wants to return to the city? Why does Dally disagree with his decision? Johnny doesn t want to be running away all of his life. He thinks it is possible to be let off easily because he doesn t have a police record, and he killed Bob in self-defense. Dally disagrees with Johny because he has been to jail and knows what it is like. He is afraid of what even a short time in jail might do to Johnny. He doesn t want Johnny to become hardened and mean the way he is. 3. Why are Ponyboy and Johnny so quick to rescue the children from the burning church? Ponyboy believes he and Johnny started the fire with a lit cigarette that wasn t put out properly. He feels responsible for the kids inside and doesn t want anything to happen to them. 4. Ponyboy has described Dally as being mean, tough, unfeeling, and completely selfish. Do think this is a good description of Dally? Why or why not? There are strong hints that Dally is not as unfeeling and tough as Ponyboy believes. Ponyboy is surprised to see how much Dally cares about Johnny. Dally also gave the boys money and clothes, including the jacket that probably saved Ponyboy s life. He came to visit them and bring them news, and risked his own life to rescue Johnny when he collapsed in the burning church. 5. How has the killing in the park affected the relationship between the greasers and the Socs? An all-out war has broken out between the greasers and the Socs. They have planned a large rumble that they claim will settle the conflicts between them once and for all. 6. How does Ponyboy s view of Darry change? Why does it change? For a long time Ponyboy has believed that Darry didn t care for him. When he sees how upset Darry is at the hospital, Ponyboy understands that Darry loves him and cares about him very much. He knows that Darry is so tough on him because he wants him to make something better of himself

62 Selection Review #4 Chapters 7 and 8 1. Why might the news stories be a good thing for Ponyboy and Johnny? What negative effect could the news stories have? Many people consider Ponyboy and Johnny heroes after reading the news stories. This is good because it might cause the judge to be easier on the boys when they go to court over Bob s death. However, the news stories have also brought out the fact that Ponyboy is cared for by his older brother, not parents. Some people think that Darry is not old enough or responsible enough to raise two teenaged boys. Ponyboy and Sodapop could be sent to a home where adults will take care of them. 2. What does Ponyboy learn about Bob from Randy and Cherry? In what ways is Bob similar to Dally? Randy tells Ponyboy that Bob was a great friend. He says that part of the reason for Bob s wild behavior was the fact that he wanted his parents to show their love for him by setting limits for him, which they never did. In spite of Bob s anger and wild behavior, Cherry cared about him. She says Bob could be very sweet, and she admired him for his leadership abilities and the way he stood out from the crowd. Bob and Dally are very similar. Like Bob, Dally is wild and has both good and bad qualities. Dally could be lighthearted and fun to be with, or he could be very angry. He, too, is a leader and someone that others depend on to get things done. Cherry is attracted to Dally because she sees qualities in him like those that attracted her to Bob. 3. Ponyboy comments, Randy was too cool to feel anything, and yet there was pain in his eyes. What does his conversation with Randy make Ponyboy realize about the Socs? Through his conversation with Randy, Ponyboy realizes that Randy is not cool, but sensitive and caring. Randy will not take part in the rumble because he is tired of all the fighting and because it doesn t do any good. Ponyboy once again sees how similar greasers and Socs are. All of the young people want good homes and good relationships with their parents. All of them are real people with emotions and needs. All of them value their friendships. Only a few individuals actually enjoy fighting; the others are just trying to get along and be loyal to their friends. 4. Why does Johnny refuse to see his mother when she comes to the hospital? Johnny s parents have shown little concern for him all of his life. He is sure that his mother is visiting the hospital to blame him for all the trouble he is in, not to comfort him. This is why he refuses to see her. continued...

5. How do Ponyboy and his friends react when they realize Johnny might die? Why do you think they feel this way?. Ponyboy and his friends are very upset at the thought that Johnny might die. When the doctor uses the expression if he recovers, Ponyboy reacts strongly. He says, Not if. Why do they keep saying if? Two-Bit declares that the gang could get along without any other member, but not Johnny. Dally becomes very angry when he learns that Johnny may die. He insists that the greasers must win the rumble to pay the Socs back for Johnny s suffering. There are several possible reasons why the boys feel this way. Johnny was the one they tried to protect and take care of. They had a special love for him. They will probably also feel guilty because in the end they were not able to protect him as they wanted to. 83

64 Selection Review #5 Chapters In the graphic organizer below, several events in chapters 9-12 are listed in the Causes boxes. Complete the organizer by identifying effects that resulted from these causes. List these in the Effects boxes. Possible answers are given on the reverse of this page. CAUSES EFFECTS There is a rumble between the Socs and the greasers. Johnny dies. Sodapop runs out of the house in anger. 2. What is falling action? Describe the falling action in. Falling action includes the events that follow the climax, the most dramatic part of the story. In this section, loose ends in the story are brought to a conclusion. The falling action in includes the events that follow Dally s death. At the court hearing, the judge decides to allow the Curtis boys to stay together. Through Ponyboy s illness and recovery, the brothers realize how important it is for them stick together and take care of their own conflicts. Ponyboy finally accepts that Johnny is dead. He decides to write a school paper about what happened so that other people can understand who the greasers are and what their lives are like. continued...

65 3. What does Ponyboy want other people to learn as they read his paper about the recent events in his life? Ponyboy wants readers to get an idea of what life is like for a young man, rich or poor, growing up in the city. He wants people to understand that there is something good in every young person, even those who fight, carry switchblades, and wear grease in their hair. He wants his readers to care about the problems of young people. Someone needs to to reach out and help them before their lives get out of control and end tragically, as Johnny, Bob, and Dally s lives did. 4. Identify one theme of. Give examples to support your answer. Some themes of the novel are: All young people, no matter what their lifestyle, have something good in them and have lives worth living. Young people usually get into trouble because they do not have the support and guidance they need from their parents. Young people of all social classes face similar challenges and stresses growing up. Adults should not judge young people by their appearance, but should help those who are headed for trouble before it is too late. Make sure you can give examples to support the theme you select. Some possible answers to Question #1 are as follows: CAUSES EFFECTS There is a rumble between the Socs and the greasers. The greasers win the fight, but many gang members are injured and the hatred between the groups continues. Ponyboy realizes the fighting is foolish, useless, and dangerous. Johnny dies. Sodapop runs out of the house in anger. The greasers feel lost without Johnny. In despair, Dally robs a store and forces the police to shoot him. Ponyboy, overcome with grief, becomes sick and confused. Ponyboy and Darry realize how much their bickering bothers Sodapop. They acknowledge how important it is for them to stick together, and Darry and Ponyboy promise to stop fighting.
