3 Breast Surgery Packet How to Prepare for Surgery No eating or drinking anything at all after midnight the night before your surgery. This includes water, chewing gum, or hard candy on the day of surgery. Any medications that you were told to take by your doctor should be taken with a small sip of water on the morning of surgery. Please arrive on time for check-in before your surgery, as instructed. The time for check-in is listed above. Please do not take aspirin (this includes baby aspirin), ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, or Aleve, or similar products for seven days prior to your surgery, However, if you take a daily aspirin or a blood thinner, you must talk with your surgeon to see if you should stop taking this medication before your surgery. Wear comfortable clothing and a soft comfortable bra. Please remove all jewelry, piercings, and nail polish before arrival. Please leave all valuables at home. Contact your surgeon s office if you develop cold or flu symptoms. If you are scheduled to go home on the day of surgery, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. On the day of surgery, please report to the check-in area where you were instructed to go your Pre-Operative Appointment. Your family member or a friend may accompany you. You will meet your surgeon in the pre-op area shortly before your surgery to ask any final questions or discuss any concerns that you may have. Once you go to into surgery, your family member or friend may wait in the waiting area. Before you can go home, you will need to tolerate liquids, urinate, and walk without dizziness. We will make sure your discomfort is tolerable. Your going-home instructions will be reviewed with you before your discharge. Everyone responds differently to surgery, so it is difficult to say exactly when you will be discharged. During your pre-operative appointment, the nurse will give you a general idea about how long it will take you to recover. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the surgical scheduler for Dr. Choi and Dr. Dunn (805)

4 Discharge Instructions After you leave the hospital, please follow these instructions. Instructions following anesthesia or sedation The medicines and/or anesthesia you received today are strong and will affect your body for at least the next few hours. You should not do things that require you to think or act quickly. You should not do things that require careful work. You should not make important decisions or sign legal papers today. The medications may make you feel drowsy or nauseated, or you may have a poor appetite. If these problems are prolonged or severe, please call your doctor. Medications You should go back to taking all of your usual medications (if any), unless your doctor has told you otherwise. In addition, the medications listed below have been prescribed for you. Please do not add any other new medicines without asking your doctor first.
