2 Swim to Survive Classroom Lesson Plans Curriculum Area: Physical Education and Healthy Living Grade 3 Length of Activity: 3 lessons ( minutes total) Outcomes Strategies for Healthy Living GCO B: students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge skills and attitudes that contribute to active healthy living. - B3.2 identify and practise ice and water safety precautions - Demonstrate that they are able to use the 911 emergency service - B7.1 participate in a broad range of physical activities that they enjoy GCO C Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of factors that contribute to healthy living values and practices - C2.1 identify community groups and services that support healthy active living GCO D Students will be expected to demonstrate the knowledge skills and attitudes necessary to live happily and productively as an individual within a family and within the community. - D4.1 identify and apply decision making strategies - D4.2 identify and examine common reasons some people make potentially harmful lifestyle choices. 3 Specific Curriculum Outcomes Alternative Environments - Brainstorm the hazards of going sledding and going to the beach - Experience playing a game in a variety of environments Lifesaving Learning Outcomes Lesson #1 - Students will understand that they should never swim alone - Students will understand why swimming in areas supervised by lifeguards is a safer choice - Students will be able to demonstrate why and how to boat safely. Lesson #2 - Students will understand the importance of determining the quality and thichkness of ice before venturing on it. - Understand that ice varies in terms of quality which the appearance of the ice can change very quickly. - Students will know how to prepare themselves in the event that they fall through the ice. Lesson #3 - Students will understand what a lifejacket or PFD is and what it does. - Students will understand why everyone should wear their lifejacket or PFD in a boat. Lesson #1- Always swims with a buddy Materials - The Drowning Report available on the Nova Scotia Lifesaving Society website under the other services tab then forms and publications. - A copy of the learning activity for each student entitled Choose it. Use it. Lifejackets have come a long way word search. - Buddy the lifeguard dog coloring page - Coloring pages- see appendix for examples. o Always swim in a supervised area o Always swim with a buddy never swim alone o Always swim with a buddy (buddy the lifeguard dog second page) o Two other always swim with a buddy pages. - The swim to survive youtube video. This video is a promo video for the program. You may choose to show your students the video before the pool sessions. o o You may also watch the same video in French

4 Throughout the Always swim with a buddy lesson it is important to keep in mind the following key messages. - Always swim with a buddy don t go in the water alone, regardless of your age and swimming ability. - Play and swim at pools and waterfronts supervised by lifeguards - If you find yourself needing help in the water, there will be a friend, or parent or lifeguard who can assist you. - A buddy can also call for emergency assistance. If required - Boating messages o Always tell some buddy when and where you are planning on going boating o Check the weather before you go boating o Ensure that all your boating buddies wear lifejackets that fits correctly when you are boating o Do not stand up in a boat especially when it is in motion - It is important to drain any bathtubs and small pools when they are not in use. They can be very dangerous if someone slips and falls in/into one. Sample flow to your lesson To start the lesson, you should post the Buddy the lifeguard Dog poster. You can also explain to the class who buddy is. Buddy the Lifeguard Dog is the official mascot of the Lifesaving Society. Buddy is a big, black, furry Newfoundlander who figures prominently in numerous Water Smart activities. It may be beneficial to have a talking circle with your students. You may choose to use the Swim to Survive power point provided to start or fuel your conversations. As an ending note to your talking circle the students can then complete the matching activity in the teacher s package. Once students complete the matching they can follow the color by number coloring page so they can all take home a colored version of Buddy the Lifeguard dog. There are other coloring pages attached that students can take home or can complete in class if they finish the matching and Buddy activity early. Notes - Being alone is a contributing factor in many drownings-74% where the victim is an unsupervised child under 5 years of age. Includes almost all bathtub and most backyard pools.

5 - Drowning is silent and a person can drown in as little as 30 seconds. You will not hear a person call for help if they are drowning. Usually when someone drowns they slip beneath the surface of the water quickly and quietly. Lesson #2- Check the Ice Materials - Ice story and crossword - Ice cube trays (if you do activity 3) - Common kitchen things that you can dissolve in water (only for activity 3) Throughout the check the ice lesson it is important to keep in mind the following key messages. - Keep away from unfamiliar paths or unknown ice. Avoid traveling on ice at night. Clear hard ice is the only kind recommended for travel. - Avoid slushy ice, thawed ice that has recently refrozen, layered or rotten ice caused by sudden temperature changes and ice near moving water(ie rivers or currents) - Wear thermal protection buoyant suit to increase your changes of survival if you go through the ice. If you do not have one, wear a lifejacket or PFD over an ordinary snowmobile suit or layered winter clothing. - No ice is without some risk. Even thick ice may be weak. Be sure to measure clear hard ice in several places. To start the lesson, you should post the recommended minimum ice thickness for new clear ice poster. Activity #1 You may read don t break the ice story to your class. It is recommended that you make some copies for the students to follow along or even participate in some reading out loud. Activity #2 After the students have had a chance to read/hear the story they are welcome to complete the don t break the ice cross word puzzle. Activity #3 Making your own ice cubes. Break the students up into groups of 3-4. Give each group a ice cube tray. In each dish add different ingredients such as salt, sugar, jello, juice mix.

6 Leave at least 2 of the ice cubes with just water. Put the trays into the freezer. Leave for a few hours (1-1.5) and the revisit to see if any of the different ice surfaces you made would be safe enough to skate on. Notes - Almost 500 Canadians drown in the winter every year. Most of these drowning victims are male snowmobilers. - Three quarters of ice related incidents occurred on lakes (73%) and most of the remainder occurred on rivers (25%). - Most snowmobile incidents involved open water/ice holes (62%) and 38% happened on thin ice. Lesson #3- Wear your lifejacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) Materials - I wear my lifejacket for activity page - Swim to Survive PowerPoint - Lifejacket Coloring page - Choose it Use it Word search Activity #1 Go through the power point with the children and have a conversation about lifejackets. Activity #2 Get the students to complete the word search. The word search can be found in the lesson plan activity guide. Activity #3 Print off enough copies of I wear my lifejacket for pages so each student can have a page. Get the students to fill in the sentence I wear my lifejacket for and then get them to list and draw pictures of how they wear there lifejacket for and why they wear their lifejacket. Throughout the wear a lifejacket or Personal flotation device (PFD) lesson it is important to keep in mind the following key messages. - A lifejacket or a personal floatation device (PFD) is a buoyant aid that helps keep a person in the water at the surface - By law, for every person in a boat, there must be a lifejacket or PFD that fits.

7 - If you re boat tips over, there is not time to put it on the PFD that fits. - Make sure the PFD or lifejacket fits you and is fastened properly - Everybody should wear a PFD or lifejacket in a boat especially small boats even adults - Non-swimmers or poor swimmers should always wear a lifejacket of PFD in the water. - A lifejacket is like a seatbelt. It should be worn to protect yourself for when you unexpectantly go overboard. Notes - Not wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device is a major factor in water related deaths. The vast majority of drowning victims are found not wearing a lifejacket or PFD in relevant situations where one would expect it to be worn. - Not wearing a lifejacket or PFD is the number 1 problem contributing to boating drownings. In about one third of boating relatied fatalities there was no lifejacket or PFDs on the boat. - Lifejackets are more buoyant than PFDs and by definition must turn the unconscious wearer up. This characteristic is not required of PFDs.
